External enclosures are a great way to have high capacity data storage on the go. Data can also be a critical factor for media, backup, or music professionals. Some of the top tier hard drive companies have made their own all in one enclosure with hard drive included. However, one of the known major causes of hard drive failure is due to excessive heat buildup caused by a lack of a proper cooling system. Also, a majority of hard drive manufactures only allow a 1 year warranty on their all in one external hard drives. This can be fatal for someone who has just lost their data and has to spend a significant amount of money in order to recover their data. There are other external enclosures in the market that provide a cooling system to help prevent this, but the physical placement of the cooling system does not always allow for the optimal airflow to cool the hard drive. Going above and beyond, the MB080USEB-1SB Blizzard is the next generation of external enclosures dedicated for maximum performance in cooling.

5 out of 5 eggsIcy Dock

Pros: First off, great product. Arrived quickly, in great shape and it's easy to work with. Next, lightning fast rebate. This company is WONDERFUL. I know they stand by their products, and value their customers (had a friend that needed their help and they came through like champs. You can't ask for more. I would buy from them again.

Cons: None. Ziltch. Nada.

Other Thoughts: The enclosure keeps your dries nice and cool.

1 out of 5 eggsFW800 flakey then dead

Pros: Taking off the Star Wars fan front and using it as a dock, as mentioned in the manual, is a plus. Never had an external enclosure that actually recommended doing this. Some can function as a dock at all, others with varying degrees of being right for the role. The Blizzard, especially at this price, would be a great FW800 dock.

Cons: FW port was flakey for a day, which wash't as simple to troubleshoot as it could have been, having bought some new drives and updated to Mavericks the day it arrived. Unfortunately, it got easier in two days when the FW800 ports both died. USB2 still works but that's of no value. Likely the chip died. Doesn't seem to be anything the looks physically amiss regarding the connection, such as a bad solder or port connection.

Other Thoughts: Since I don't have USB3 on my most current MBP, a late 2011, I still use FW800 constantly, especially as it keeps drive use compatible with my other computers, all of which have FW800. I have no need for Thunderbolt storage at their price and function. Recently bought a handful of 4T drives which I knew most of my other enclosures couldn't handle, so this seemed like a great deal at less then half the price of the original price.

Oh well. I put off RMAing it out of sheer whatever, but now that's where it goes.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 DOES NOT WORK

Pros: Great cooling and quiet. Easy to assemble. Look good while at the same time being utterly worthless. Waste of time, and company is all about profits and contempt for customers. And, those are the positive points!!!

Cons: Will not format a drive in the USB 3.0 interface. That is really disgusting. This is holding up a project and making my client very negative. I tried formatting this under the USB interface and it goes 10 hours without completing. I tried this 3 times, its worthless TOTALLY- STAY AWAY

Other Thoughts: I am really upset that a company would produce a completely useless product and market it to unwary customers. How much this company must love the dollar while holding their customers in utter contempt and detesting them. Will never consider this company, ever!!

Cons: None that I have encountered.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Enclosure!

Pros: Design wise this is a really good looking external enclosure. Deviates from the traditional boxy rectangular look but its partially due to the placement of the fan. The blue LED give it a nice touch but I was hoping it would look brighter than what was advertised. It stands well on most surfaces and is pretty sturdy all around. Having a hard drive inside helps with the sturdiness of the enclosure

With regards to connectivity it is pretty standard. I got the version with USB 2.0 and eSATA instead of USB 3.0 but USB 2.0 speeds suffice for my needs. All external connections fit well, USB, AC power etc and there were no problems with any of them. I bought a 4 TB WD drive primarily for storage and installation was a breeze with it. Popped right in and all the connectors made contact. It is really simple as opening, popping the drive in, closing it up and plugging it in. What makes this stand out compared to other external drives is the lack of screws. All you have to do is simply press the release buttons on the side to remove the front cover, pop in the drive, and snap the cover back on.

Driver installation was a breeze as well. My pc (Windows 7) picked up the drive instantly and installed the necessary drivers. The drive was recognized within a couple of minutes and was ready to be used. Note that whatever drive you put in probably has to be formatted prior to use if it hasn't been already.

Speeds were pretty decent with this type of enclosure as well. Averaging about 80-100 Mbps when connected via USB 2.0 to my desktop. Wish I had gotten the USB 3.0 version for faster data transfer. Accessing the drive over the network via another pc/device was smooth as well. Speeds were enough to support hd streaming and large file transfers.

The on off button is pretty standard nowerdays but still a must have feature on enclosures. The drive turns on and off without a hitch.

Cons: It really isn't that quiet to be honest. I usually keep this in my bedroom with my pc and I always have to turn it off before sleeping due to the noisy fan. I've heard worse fans before however .

Lack of USB 3.0 on this enclosure. They really shouldn't keep two versions of these drives. USB 3.0 is utilized far more than eSATA when it comes to connectivity and it should be standard on all ICY DOCK enclosures.

Other Thoughts: Well worth the money. Though this priced a little higher than other external enclosures out there, the ease of installation and the reliability far exceed other external drives out there. I have owned this for approximately 4 months now and I have to say that this is the most reliable external enclosure that I have owned. Over three years I have owned 4 different external enclosures, 2 which have failed on me and 2 that are still functioning but had some installation issues. The design and the lack of screws is what primarily drew me towards this product and the overall reliability sealed the deal for me. I have to give my full recommendation for this external enclosure, trust me it is worth spending the extra money for this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsMisleading Specs

Pros: Should be a nice external case for someone.....seems like it would work well.

Cons: Specs say supports Windows XP and up to 3TB drives. It does not support 3TB drives in XP. I bought it specifically to use with a 3TB drive. Wasted my $$$. Should of bought a prepackaged, ready to go 3-4TB external drive. My overall poor rating is only because it did not live up to my expectations.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff

Pros: Remarkably easy to set up, just drop in your drive, button it up, and plug it in. Been running 24/7 with my OTA DVR with no issues.

Cons: A slight "whoosh" noise evident when the AV stack is shut down, otherwise unnoticeable.

Other Thoughts: Great little unit, only seeing a 10 degree F rise in case temp over ambient on my Seagate Barracuda 2 TB drive.
Excellent customer service from Icy Dock.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Enclosure

Pros: Tool free installation
Cooling for the drive keeps drive long lasting
Fan has different speed modes
LED has diffferent Lighting modes
USB 3 Compatible

Cons: Price is a bit high for a single Enclosure
2.5” Drives Adapters Not Included

Other Thoughts: by far one my favorite ICY dock products, apart from the Multi Drive enclosures. The LED turns red when the drive is overheating too :)

I didn't like the way it looked on the computer though because it had an obvious weird shape, but It looked cooler in real :)

4 out of 5 eggsVery useful for frequently moved HDDs

Pros: Relatively easy to swap drives
Firewire 800
Ample cooling
Decent build quality

Cons: Front panel hard to attach correctly
Front panel difficult to remove without using both hands on a work surface
SATA connection not always reliable

Other Thoughts: I prefer this enclosure to make offsite backup copies in bare drives. More reliable than dock type adaptors, and it has good cooling capacity. Only thing I wish is improvement on the mechanism to hold the front panel, the front panel release mechanism, and reliability of connection. I'm yet to see SATA connection going bad after the drive is properly recognized, but I have to do complete reseating of the hard drive and power cycle to get the drive recognized.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet External Enclosure!

Pros: Easy to load and unload SATA drives because no tools are needed. In my opinion, you need a fan to cool an external drive. The Icy Dock has a big fan that's pretty quiet. Fan and light controls are nice to have too. I have a WD Caviar Black 2TB in it, (connected by firewire 800), and it's lighting fast!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you need a single external hard drive enclosure, this is the one!
