2 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: Holds 5 Drives

Cons: Of the 4 of these my customer's have the handles have broken left and right. VERY poor construction

Other Thoughts: There are much better backplanes for around the same price

4 out of 5 eggsLong term it works fine.

Pros: Works well, fits 5 disks in 3 5.25" bays. Seems pretty durable for the money.

Cons: A lot of cases have shelves between the bays, which need to be removed to fit. That isn't really the cages fault though. The fan died after 3 years.

Other Thoughts: I've been using this for over 4 years without any issues. I've used it with 500MB drives through 2TB, with multiple sata controllers, including PERC/LSI SAS RAID controllers. The little lock switches broke on couple trays, but the levers are all fine on mine. I had to replace the fan at one point, but it only took a bit of solder and some time.
Never had an issue with hard disks failing or hot swapping causing issues.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - Nice sleds
- Keeps the drives cool
- Fan on low is very quiet, and move enough air to cool 4 1 TB drives.
- Temp+Fan monitor.

Cons: - No documentation.
- Has a ton of rear pinouts, that aren't documented.
- Latches are plastic.
- On off buttons get jammed some times.
- Lock can be bypassed with almost anything.

Other Thoughts: If you get a drive that will not turn on, pull all the drives out, and check the back pcb switches. The front panel on/off buttons are just plastic rods that hit buttons on the rear pcb. They get jammed sometimes. Just use pick, or anything long and pointed to push the button down so it clicks.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent after modifications

Pros: I put this in a rack server in order to hot swap storage drives in a RAID array. After reading reviews I was concerned about the levers but that hasn't been a problem. I push the drive in until I feel the plugs engage and then I use the lever to lock the unit in place.

Cons: The fan is quite loud so I replaced the fan with a Nexus fan. I mounted the fan to the backside of the fan shroud with rubber fan mounts for additional reduction in noise and vibration. My HDDs never get hot.

Other Thoughts: I would be happy to pay extra for a better design, more air flow, and silent fans. I don't mind modifying things to get better performance but it usually tends to void the warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsThe Good & the Bad

Pros: Compatible with other AMS external enclosures.
Works reasonably well.
Reasonable price.

Cons: DOA - was a loose power connection in back. Fixed it myself, but was I kind of aggravated.
Will not work with certain raid controllers.
Has 5 power connections in back that seem to all require power for the box to function - Is this really necessary?

Other Thoughts: I own 5 Venus enclosures of various vintage and number of disks. I have had 2 trays break out of 20 trays and one 2 disk external burn up after 2 years or so. Many of the complaints are unmerited, because to be fair, if you look at the tray levers design, it is usually because

4 out of 5 eggsGood product

Pros: Good compact design, aluminum construction, built-in alarm.

Cons: Tray levers break often, but this can be easily
prevented with some epoxy in the weak spot.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

Pros: Nothing exceptional for a JBOD box. Fan keeps drives cool

Cons: I have had this unit for a year. All five drive levers have broken off... two spontaneously. One of the five drive bays burned out, major electrical burn smell, and rendered the drive inoperable.

Drives need screws for installation in the trays, and most normal screws cause a tray insert issue.

They need to get up to date with drive housing. Model is old and needs upgrading.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice, but not great

Pros: Nice drive layout. 5 in 3 is what I want and I like the 80mm fans (I hope they are replaceable, but after three years I haven't had to yet). I like being able to pull a drive from the front easily. Mix of SATA and Molex power adds flexibility. You do not have to have all of them plugged in 1 to 1. Each power plug adds to the bus, so to speak. You can unscrew and repair the cheap plastic bits within the lever.

Cons: The power and SATA ports are very close to the protruding fan box, so it makes pass-through cables a much tighter connection to make. This mostly has to do with SATA power cables that you'll have to fold the wires back to make the connection, but if you have right angle SATA data cables, they will have a problem too.
Mix of SATA and Molex power is confusing (minor nit).
LED layout is somewhat skewed. A light right over the drive is what I want. They use cheap plastic bits in the lever system. One was broken right out of the box. Superglue to the rescue. Sometimes a light won't illuminate correctly. I have one stuck in green, with a drive present and activity occurring. Hardly worth sending back for an RMA, but quite annoying nonetheless. They don't give enough cage screws in the pack.

Other Thoughts: I just bought three more of these for a new fileserver. I have two in an older fileserver and one more in my main system for six total. I like having uniformity with the sleds and parts. They function reasonably well, but for the price, I should not have any problems. Make sure you use the screws that came with it. Especially the cage screws which are far shorter than standard screws. Standard screws will catch on the drives and sleds within. Also, don't forget to power each slot with the tiny button under the slot location. I found this an odd thing, but oh well.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap Quality

Pros: Cheap and holds 5 drives. Nice large fan in back.

Cons: Poor quality. 4 out of 5 pull levers broken on their own. Really. The server was sitting in a back room running untouched/unseen for over a year. When I went to do the yearly cleaning, I notice 4 of the 5 the pull levels popped out. The plastic pivot points broke on there own. Don't know when, but I did not even touch it. It still works, but the bays don't latch properly.

5 out of 5 eggsfantastic

Pros: It cools the enclosed drives excellently. It's not too loud. The metal drawers are easy to slide in and out.

Cons: The switches to turn on the various drive slots are unintuitive. They're the little tiny circles on the right front side. You have to use a bent paper clip or a pen to successfully push them.

Other Thoughts: I've got two of these outboard on top of the machine that runs my raid with 10 1T drives. They've been on continuously for over two years, and there hasn't been a drive failure.
