Unleash the power of Ancient Greece with the Athena Power 400W PSU. It puts out 400W maximum power - just what you need for all your components. Athena includes backwards capability which allows it to be used with older motherboards, like the ATX V2.2. This PSU also includes a PCI Express 6-PIN connector for VGA card use.  The Micro SFX includes dual fans for a cooler computer with reduced noise and ripple features.

  • newegg The Micro SFX Design Micro SFX power supplies are known mostly as a replacement power supply. But now, they have evolved to be used for mini-ATX cases, custom built computers, mini-servers and more. With the increase of wattage and efficiency, the micro SFX is a conventional PSU that can be used for multiple purposes.
  • newegg Designed for custom built PCs, mini-servers, and HTPCs The APOLLO 400Watt power supply will support the most current ATX motherboards V2.2 and lower. Its PCI-E 6-pin connector supports an additional VGA card. This PSU is ideal for custom-built PCs, mini-servers and HTPCs.
  • newegg Dual Fan With its dual fans located at the front and back of the power supply, the rear fan takes in the heat produced inside the server or system and pushes it through the front fan, which is positioned towards the exit points of the server/system, keeping the motherboard and hard drives cool. This design allows the power supply to take 100% of the heat generated by the interior system and push it out of the server/system. While some other PSU fans work differently, this dual-fan set-up is designed to maintain a reliable source of power, keeping the system cool. Some may second guess this dual fan feature for fear it will increase noise volumes; however, with its thermal fan speed control, it will automatically detect the amount of heat generated by the computer and spin accordingly - reducing overall noise.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate to Athena Power AP-MP4ATX40 Micro ATX 400W PSU review

Pros: Speedy initial delivery from Newegg
Newegg return policy & timely replacement.

I dislike posting a bad review even though I feel it’s deserved so I wanted to follow up with what I found.

Cons: As I stated in my previous review I’ve tried two of these Athena power supplies. Last week, I ordered a different brand and installed it last Wednesday. The computer has been run 12-16 hours every day for a week without a single reboot. Even with the new Athena power supply, I had at least one reboot a day and some days multiples. I also added two new 3 TB hard drives in addition to my original 320 GB drive without the rebooting issue occurring. That problem appears to be solved by the new PS.

Other Thoughts: Last week I stated that the Athena Power AP-MP4ATX40 needs better filtering. I mentioned the noisy supply voltage in my previous post. To be fair, I am able to detect similar noise with the new supply. The difference is I have to turn the volume almost full up to hear it. When the Windows 7 welcome sound played I thought my speakers would blow! The audio amplifier noise from the new power supply is undetectable at normal to moderately loud volume levels where it was quite pronounced from both Athena power supplies. 2nd problem solved.

1 out of 5 eggsAthena Power AP-MP4ATX40 Micro ATX 400W PSU

Pros: Speedy delivery from Newegg
Fits my old HP pavilion XT856 case.
Advertised to provide:
A “maximum power” of 400W.
Has a 24 pin MB ATX connector + a 12 volt 4 pin processor connector.

Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H MB, Q9550 Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor, 4 GB Corsair xms2 DDR2, ATI Radeon HD5570, Floppy Disk Drive, Seagate 320 GB ST3320620AS SATA HD, HP DVD Writer 1270d, Hauppauge HVR-1800 TV Tuner, HP 6511-SU Keyboard & Mouse.

Cons: I bought one of these (MP4ATX40) in July of 2009 to power my new HTPC. That computer would periodically reset itself –especially under load. I never knew why. Recently, one of the fans went bad in that power supply. I substituted an old 300W full size ATX PS temporarily and ran it for 2 ½ weeks installing operating systems and copying large amounts of data without experiencing a single reset. Concluding the original Athena power supply was bad, I ordered a new one. The new one arrived on Friday and I installed it Saturday morning. The computer hadn’t been on 2 hours when it reset itself while installing Ubuntu 14.04. I am writing this on Sunday night and I’ve had two more resets. My “Killawatt EZ” shows the max input power draw from the 110 volt mains is 130 watts on boot up, or less than 1/3 of the output the unit is rated to deliver. Sitting idle, where it also rebooted, it only draws 85.9 watts. Not sure if these power supplies are grossly over rated or I just got two flakey units in a row -5 years apart.

Other Thoughts: I prefer to use the computers power supply to power a small audio amplifier that drives my HTPC speakers. That way the amplifier is only switched on when it’s needed. The amplifier needs 12 volts @ < 2 amps. If I try to power it with either of the Athena power supplies I hear constant switching noise that gets especially bad when the hard drive is running. I do not hear any noise when the amplifier is connected to any of my other computer’s power supplies. With the Athena power supplies installed, I have to use an “always on” 12 V, 1 amp AC adapter to power the amplifier.

If I can find another brand that fits my case and supports my motherboard I’ll definitely try to send this one back.

5 out of 5 eggsFingers crossed still running

Pros: just enough connections for a media center, low price, fits my case

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Quieter then previous my PSU that came with cheap case TOPOWER TP-1687BB-300 I got for $20 free shipping. I was a little nervous to get due to some negative reviews of their issues. You can still hear the fan but it is low and can not hear the fan across the room or over movies playing. Running E8400 intel DG45ID motherboard with 6gb ram and a nivia gt 640 video card. I was running 8gb ram but intel q45 boards has issues with certain ram occupying all 4 slots no matter what power supply I tried and kept crashing. For what I saved getting this PSU over the more expensive I was able to get a better newer video card that is more power efficient.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Power Supply

Pros: Shiny case

Cons: Computer was working with different Power Supply. Installed Athena... Started once then quit. Hard drive destroyed, then wouldn't start under load.

Other Thoughts: Motherboard and memory okay. Used a new Hard Disk and different power supply and computer is OK. Can't recommend this unit!

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 6 months

Pros: Low initial cost

Cons: On a low power system (50w max) this 400w supply was done in less than a year. That is completely unacceptable. Avoid this unit or have a backup ready.

Other Thoughts: Never again with this manufacturer.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in less than 3 months

Pros: Right fan configuration for DVR
Power switch

Cons: Died in less than 3 months

Other Thoughts: I guess you get what you pay for. Not worth the time and money to send it back for a warranty claim. I'll just roll the dice on another one.
