The Macally G-S350SUA USB2.0/eSATA/1394 drive enclosure is simply elegant. Pop any 3.5" SATA drive into the enclosure, connect to your computer via eSATA, 1394A or USB 2.0, and you’ve got an external hard drive that transfers data at rates up to 3Gb/s!
The rugged aluminum enclosure maximizes cooling so your hard drive won’t heat up as much as it would inside the computer. Its sleek exterior makes it a perfect match for your Mac.

eggcellent
- Pros: Solid case w/ good design, nice, professional looking/lasting materials.
Awesome inclusion of stand options and accessories.
Has everything an external should have, like chainable firewire.
Very easy to set up, take apart, use, install internal, install product. No problems what so ever.
The stands have amazing grip on the bottom, you could probably set it on a steep incline and it wouldn't slide.
- Cons: All included cables (firewire, usb, esata) are just too short. I don't know what the purpose of doing this was..
Looks like a Mac. Yes, I put this under cons. I bought this enclosure because it's an excellent-made product, and I needed something nice. I don't care about macs, and the very moment just the the tip of this external pokes out of the box when I bring it somewhere, I have to hear someone talk about macs and how much it looks like a G5. A pro for everyone else--con to me.
- Other Thoughts: I'll probably buy more, great product that if company could simply include some decent sized cords, make it an exceptional product.
Defective, and some other dislikes
- Pros: * mostly aluminum enclosure is sturdy and good looking
* sliding case design makes installing drives easy * two types of vertical stands included * included cables seem to be of decent quality
- Cons: * defective: Firewire transfer speeds only 200 Mb/s on three different machines! @->: (
* power button has embedded LED that you can't turn off without disabling the power switch! (might be able to disable the LED with working knowledge of electronics and soldering skill, but who wants to go through all that trouble?) * LED is way too bright for low-light environments such as entertainment center / living room - also it blinks during access, which is even more distracting * sliding case is loose so that hard drive vibrations can cause the case itself to vibrate loudly * enclosure inside has rough edges - I gouged a couple finger nails during installation * drive mounts directly on metal with no rubber pads for shock absorption * power button design can cause power button to stick or grab during use * Firewire connection seems to allow for a lot more play than I would like - cables can become disconnected easily
- Other Thoughts: The macally PHRS250CC 2.5" USB 2.0 & 1394 External Enclosure is a better buy, IMO. You can disable the LED in it without affecting the power switch. The drive mounts on rubber pads for shock absorption. The enclosure does not rattle or vibrate easily. Firewire connectors seem more stable as well.

Simple efficient
- Pros: Simple assembly, versatile connections, inexpensive. Did I mention inexpensive! Very nice backup solution or storage drive.
- Cons: None, it is what it is, simple.
- Other Thoughts: Don't forget to format your new drive. (From start button, go to "my computer", right click and go to "manage".. So many options for formatting!!) Seems to work just fine with a 1 TB green WD drive. eSata is very fast, USB, hmmm, well it is USB. Firewire is better, but not better than esata! Newegg Rocks!
Very Nicely Done 9.5/10
- Pros: 1) 95% Solid Aluminum with great ventilation (non-structural back-plate cover is abs plastic- can be removed and left off. It's primary use is to hold the middle HD holder from sliding out of the outside via 2-screws.)...
2) Stands are incredible- They really are solid!!! 3) Oxford chipset (top of the line). NICE. 4) Fast transfer rates 5) Standard "black" power plug- can be replaced with ANYTHING that outputs 12v dc with + tip. That means if you need a 3amp (vs 2amp) power for a 1.5~2+TB drive, you can stop by any electronic store and pick one up for cheap, and it's a totally standard plug. I'm using an old adaptor I found at a used electronic store. 6) 2-screws to open (you can leave them off actually); 4 mount the HD. Not bad for a well ventilated case that looks this nice. 7) It freakin ROCKS. Simply put. I've got like 12 various HD externals, and this is my favorite. On par or BETTER with the MiniPod variants and the ThermalTake "SilverRiver duo" but nicer than all of the
- Cons: 1) These would be perfect if they were *lightly sanded* before being finished- some of the edges are a bit sharp.
2) 2amp PSU is NOT enough for the biggest beefiest HD's out there- Macally should be taking care of this soon...? Some HD's run fine on 2amp, but most would be better suited with a 3amp PSU. 3) LED wires need to be bent/routed/snaked a bit to clear the HD mounting screws (Hd's mount using bottom screws to a frame). Aa piece of electrical tape fixed this and provided some drive vibration damping. Almost a plus: Macally could include a tiny piece of plastic or electrical tape for each side and this would be a plus) 4) Cables are short, but this isn't a con exactly- most people will have these on their desks or on TOP of their Pc's, and shorter cables are safer...
- Other Thoughts: I got these after 2 weeks of reading reviews and worrying about adequate power for a Samsung 1.5HD as well as future Hd's.
So far no issues with 2amp- but I have a 3amp PSU ready. Basically: I was quite happy when I opened the box. The case is well made, and WELL worth the money. I'll be ordering 3 or 4 more. Newegg- GET THE NAS VERSIONS!!! Newegg should carry these in ALL their variants that Macally stocks, esp. if they upgrade these tiny PSU's to 3amp.
I'd love the electrical tape/plastic shims for drive vibration and 4 rubber bumper feet for those of us who might want to keep this lying more flat than vertical.
Overall, this one kicks my other enclosures out the door, though it's not as insulated as my totally sealed ones. The basic aftermarket replaceable PSU plug standard jack is AWESOME (and regular 12volt/2~3amp +post) make replacing this part a breeze. It's well ventilated and I'll install a little fan for my hotter HD's in the next batch (you can rig it to the LED
Beware: ADWARE!
- Pros: Solid case, easy to assemble. So far, very reliable. Cables were long enough for me. The fact they were included at all I consider to be icing on the cake.
- Cons: Supplied backup software CD contains adware (according to my AV software). Would have been 5 eggs if not for that. Do yourself a favor and toss the CD in the trash. I challenge NewEgg & McAlly to explain the adware.
- Other Thoughts: If you don't like the cables that came with the unit, spend a few more bucks and get exactly what you want.
