5 out of 5 eggsA Must for anyone loading multiple Operating Systems

Pros: I am very impressed with this device.

With this device you will no longer need to carry multiple CD's, DVD's, or flash drives. I have a 1TB drive full of Server operating systems, MS office installation files, Desktop operating systems, and many other ISO's loaded on this device. I can mount any of the ISO's as a drive on the computer I am working on, I can even boot from the device.
The ZALMAN will look like an ordinary DVD or CD drive to the system. You can also use the ZALMAN as a regular storage drive.

You can mount an ISO and boot from the drive or you can mount an ISO and access it from within the OS. I have mounted and booted from the ZALMAN to use my troubleshooting programs.

USB3.0 transfer speeds. Supply any 2.5" drive you want. The ZALMAN will load any software faster than a CD or DVD drive.

The ZALMAN is a tool that I cannot live without!

5 out of 5 eggsPure joy for PC enthusiast

Pros: It works, and it removes headache to decide which CD to find or troubles from creating yet another USB flash drive to install OS. Also no software needed to install something from ISO.

Also new firmware allows to have VHD mounted as real drive. Just cool!

Cons: Slightly confusing menu, and I updated firmware to non-ntfs (which came first on zalman website) and could not figure out why iso does not mount, then refreshed firmware to NTFS supporting and got everything right.

Other Thoughts: If you install and reinstall software multiple times and if you deal a lot with different OS installation - that thing's just a bliss!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD Enclosure + Virtual CD Feature

Pros: All Pros an external HDD enclosure can have (aluminium chassis, USB 3.0) + Virtual CD feature which mean you can mount ISO as bootable files like Windows disc to format/install a computer at a faster speed using the superior speed of the drive. Use the click Wheel to choose which ISO to mount.

Cons: If you don't plan to install a SSD in this enclosure, you have virtually no cons here. The SATA 2 interface used in the enclosure is enough to get the maximum performance of any hard drive. (There is no hard drive over 300 mo/s transfert rate except SSD which are way expensive per Gb to really make use of these as storage drives.

Other Thoughts: Pretty much the best enclosure you can get except if you prefer to get a 7mm or 5mm ''slim'' hard drive instead of the Virtual CD feature to get a smaller enclosure to carry on or you plan to install a SSD in it which is pretty much useless performance wise if you use it to transfert from or to a single mechanical hard drive that will limit the transfert rate.

5 out of 5 eggsInvaluable Tool for a PC Tech

Pros: Supports the use of folders for the ISO file booting
Supports Virtual Hard disk mounting
The length of the included Cord is good at 21.5 inches long
Supports up to 64 ISO files as of R904 firmware update
The LED is white while utilizing a USB 2.0 connection and blue on USB 3.0
Ran cool, the hard drive never got hotter than 90 °F during testing
Provides HDD SMART status, temperature, voltage on the device
Also has options to set the screen brightness, write protect, and my favorite hard drive sleep timer

In order to use this, you must boot up to bios (In case you system does not provide enough power while off to do this), set the disk on the device and then restart (Via Ctrl + Alt + Del so you don’t lose power) and select the Zalman Virtual Disc and it will boot.

Performance (SATA III SSD) - USB 3.0
• Read: 244 MB/s
• Write: 250 MB/s

Performance (SATA III SSD) - USB 2.0

Tested ISO’s that worked (UEFI):
• DaRT 8 x64
• Windows 8.1 Pro x64
• Lazesoft Recover My Password Home Edition (3.3)

Tested ISO’s that didn’t work (UEFI) that support it:
• Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
• DaRT 7 x64

Cons: Does not support TRIM over USB
Not a SATA III connection
Poor USB 2.0 write performance (Got the same results with multiple drives on multiple computers)

From all of my tests and programs run, TRIM does not work on this device so with that and the lack of SATA III, I would not recommend this device to be used with a SSD.

Other Thoughts: In summary this is one awesome device and should have been made a long time ago. If you are someone who works on computers a lot this is an invaluable tool as you literal just drag and drop ISO files and they boot. No complicated setup or weird stuff to code like when using grub4dos or syslinux.

Actually SSD Speed in Computer on a SATA III port:
• Read: 478 MB/s
• Write: 396 MB/s

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.
*All tests were conducted on USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports on multiple computers to ensure consistent compatibility and functionality.

5 out of 5 eggsI Love this thing

Pros: Fast.: With and old WDC WD2500BEVT I am getting 120 MB/s reads and 105 MB/s writes with large files. Will report back if I get an SSD to test.

The Price is fair for all it does. Cost me $50.99. Note bad. It is now $10 cheaper, witch make it very fair.

Live drive info is nice. Temp and S.M.A.R.T. health status. Dive operates at the same temp as the drives in my notebook around 86F 30C.

Flexable: There are some my thing you can do with this enclosure. The description really does not cover what it can do. Besides being able to mount ISO file for CD/DVD/BR, it also (with included software) create virtual hard drives in .DSK format and Floppy disk images in .IMA format. This come in handy for to be able to run utilities on untrusted machines. Just boot form a Live Linux ISO and virtual HDD mounted. Your data on the physical drive is save.

Cons: While the build quality seem good, I can see problems later with USB connector. It has been reported many times. I can't say this is the fault of Zalman. This seem to be problem with the USB 3.0 connector in general. All I can say is keep this in mind. Don't let the unit hang from the back of your tower. When using the controls try to do so without picking it up.

Other Thoughts: Only thing it can not do is act as CD/DVD/BR burner. That Would be nice when creating Recovery disc for a new system or boot media form utilities like Paragon and Arconis.

2 out of 5 eggsIt's great, when it works

Pros: Virtual CD/DVD/BD Drive
USB 3.0

Cons: ONLY works on USB 3.0

Other Thoughts: I don't know what is happening here. My device stopped working on anything other than USB 3.0 ports, which makes it virtually unusable. The first one I bought worked perfectly for about 14months so when it broke, I was a little upset but I loved the device so I bought a new one. The second one only worked for a week until the same issue appeared. Very upsetting because this is a great product that I can not live without. I'm going to have to bust out my old USB cd rom drive...

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for Multiboot - Works As Advertised

Pros: - Works as advertised - able Mount & Boot numerous ISOs as virtual disc drives via enclosure's interface and install OS's, boot to Linux Live distros, boot to PC repair tools, etc

- Supports virtual disc drive, standard hard drive, & both together

- Glad it is sold as enclosure only. Rather buy this and add drive I want instead of forced to buy bundled / integrated 320gb drive

Being a multiboot fanatic and big geek (surprise), I've always wondered why enclosures haven't ever offered a method to virtualize ISOs to boot directly to them. Finally, this enclose came out.

I've had it almost a year now and currently have a 750gb Hybrid drive installed (easy process.) I use it to install OSs (Windows, Linux, etc) about 20% of the time it's used and 80% for general storage.

The case comes with a pleather sleeve which so far has protected it better than most. I also like the light, but strong aluminum body. The display is bright and easy to read.

It copies files over USB 3.0 / 2.0 just as fast as other drives (much of that depends on drive you have inside, too) I like it and would purchase another.

Cons: - No internal battery - Power is received from USB port and must be on to select / mount ISO. Computers POST too fast for anyone to do this and rebooting cuts off power on most

- Sometimes difficult to show on boot menu

- Limited # of ISOs you can select from (40?)

- Do not expect to boot & install OS over USB 3.0 speeds as most PCs do not support this. 2.0 works (Mostly PC / OS fault on this one)

Other Thoughts: Suggestions for next model. Most important are at the top:

1. Internal rechargable battery for mounting ISO before turning on PC or plugging in (Would fix most my grief)

2. OLED or display with more resolution

3. Ability to add more than ~40 ISOs to ./iso folder (ISOs you may choose to mount via enclosure's LCD)

4. Built in Wi-Fi... Not that I feel it's a missing feature -but - I also own a Seagate Wireless Drive (1tb) which I have swapped the firmware out with to provide more features. If I could combine the two drives, it would be incredible. Wasn't going to add this, but why not?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: Does what it says it'll do. Note that not all computers support booting from USB, and rarely older computers that claim to be USB bootable are incompatible with this.

Good construction

Solid, durable, keeps HDD/SSD cool.

Cons: I've read that the mounting feature is NTFS only, which could be an inconvenience to non windows users.

I can't explain it but sometimes I just have a hard time getting some older computers to 'take', but it works eventually.

Not sata III, only sata II

Older model had temperature display always visible. This one hides it under a menu.

Other Thoughts: This is incredibly useful for a very specific person. If you don't plan on relying on NTFS and you want SATAIII, then look elsewhere. But as far as I know, nothing else does virtual disk emulation at such high speeds (my friend has told me android can do it, but between USB2 and crummy phone-SD performance, it won't be nearly as fast).

4 out of 5 eggsZalman Replaced

Pros: Same as before.
Zalman Support

Cons: USB3 microb connector is unreliable

Other Thoughts: I reviewed this before my RMA when the USB3 connector broke. Zalman RMA'd me a new one without question. Will baby this one until I have to hard solder the connection on after the warranty runs out.

4 out of 5 eggsSlightly flawed nut worth it

Pros: Write protection
Loading ISO's as a virtual CD/DVD drive
Looks great
USB 3.0 speed

Cons: Write protection switch is software not hardware

Other Thoughts: Coming from the USB 2.0 version (I dropped it and the selector broke, my bad) I'm happy to have the speed boost, but I miss the hardware write protect switch. At the least they could put it as a main menu option instead of burying it. Old one also has eSATA but I never really used it and it required the USB cable too which was annoying. Reading the reports about the connector issues I've been somewhat careful with it and unplug the cable before I put it in my bag, so far I've had no issues (2-3 months occasional use). The ISO loading feature is great, I have all the versions of Windows, Office, etc. ready to go when my clients (inevitably) can't find them when I need to repair their computers. Not only does it take less space than a stack of discs, it's much faster. I plan on putting in an SSD eventually which will really make installs fly.
