1 out of 5 eggsStopped working after minimal use

Pros: Cheap price.

Cons: Cheap construction. Unreliable..

Other Thoughts: I had a 5400 rpm/500 Gb drive installed and connected to a media player. It got used perhaps a few times a month. After 6 months, it simply stopped working. Wouldn't power up.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as it should, with some concerns

Pros: Easy to use and put together, use any laptop hard drive, Very fast 80mb/s for a 5400 rpm hard drive.

Cons: Screwdriver in package doesn't work great at all, cheaply put together screwdriver that turns on its handle and not at the head. So if you have a small screwdriver for electronics that would be your best bet to get this together correctly. Could have had a micro usb connection but that's OK. I have seen one issue i really don't like, after about id say 15 seconds of no activity the drive spins down to a slow speed and 15 later the device spins down totally. That is not going to be good on the hard drive after prolonged use, that's just my opinion though.

Other Thoughts: I wished there was a second LED for activity but it was $15 with shipping. You can't beat that. I would get another one of these for the speed of the device. usb 2.0 and 3.0 work perfectly fine between my laptop and desktop.
I would recommend anyone getting this if you got a spare 500 gig laptop drive laying around

3 out of 5 eggsSo So

Pros: Cheap, aluminum body, USB 3.0

Cons: Plastic ends break easy.

Other Thoughts: The one I got had plastic push tabs to remove the plastic end. Once I put the hard drive in I had to push very hard to re-close the plastic end. The plastic nubs broke off and I had to super glue the plastic end. Will never be able to change the hard drive without destroying the plastic end.

5 out of 5 eggsBest value for a 2.5" SATA drive

Pros: Inexpensive.
Durable.
Standard USB 3.0 port.
No AC adapter required.
Fast transfer speed whether it's a HDD or SDD inside.

Cons: The only weak spot might be the retention screws when closing it up after the drive is installed - be very careful to not torque them down too much, or you might strip out the holes. Has not happened to me, but I can foresee that happening to someone that takes zero care with a screwdriver. Go slow and use at least a little bit of common sense and caution.

Other Thoughts: Having owned two of these for over a year now, I can attest to the quality and durability. I upgraded both my laptops to SSD's and placed the factory installed HDD's in these enclosures. Recently reverted my oldest laptop back to the factory HDD and put the SDD in this enclosure. I think of it as making my own 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive in a nice durable aluminum housing that I can toss in my laptop bag and not worry about fragility.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Looks good

Cons: Doesn't work

Other Thoughts: Didn't work with my Vertex 4 SSD. Tried different formats on drive, different USB ports, everything. Nothing worked. RMA'd for a new one, same problem. Unless you own one of the few drives that this thing actually works with, you will be disappointed. Look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk, did not work.

Pros: Nice looking enclosure, but since it doesn't work, and isn't very heavy, it doesn't make a good paperweight.

Cons: This failed to work on any of the three 2.5" drives I tried. I tried plugging into a USB 3.0 port and a 2.0 port. The power light came on and the drive spun up (sometimes), but it never showed up in the disk manager in the OS. I tried all three drives with an external Vantec adapter and all three of the drives worked fine. The controller chip on the unit must be bad or something.

Other Thoughts: By the time I shipped it back it would cost half of a new one, so that's kind of a waste of my time. Kind of a bummer, and my first purchase from Newegg that was a flop. Oh well, buyer beware. You have been warned (again). Wish I had heeded some of the other warnings on these in the reviews.

1 out of 5 eggsBorked my Hard Drive

Pros: It's slim and cheap.

Cons: Bought this in order to move a laptop hard drive from my fiancée's laptop to make room for an SSD. Within a week of having the laptop's original hard drive in this enclosure it completely crashed the hard drive. I am guessing some kind of power issues but cannot be certain. It just sits there and clunks now whether its in the enclosure or put back into the laptop. Trying to recover data now from the drive, but we will see. ALSO, it wouldn't work at all connected to a USB 3.0 port. It would have to be connected to a USB 2.0 port in order for it to work at all in the beginning.

Other Thoughts: The USB 3.0 issue seems to be relatively common according to other reviewers but the issue of the enclosure completely ruining a hard drive seems to be rare. Very disappointed.

3 out of 5 eggsDon't expect the world

Pros: • Looks nice
• Finding uses for old miscellaneous storage drives
• Avg. ~30Mb/s on USB2.0 with a 5400RPM drive
• Functions without the enclosure, which is nice for troubleshooting a 3.5" drive without a hotswap cage or dock
• Plug and play*

Cons: • Tiny screws easy to strip with cheap, warped included screwdriver.
• USB port on the drive is VERY weak. If you aren't paying attention you can easily insert the plug upside down. The 'flip, find resistance, flip, insert' trick is not your friend for this enclosure.
• Won't detect on any of my USB3.0 ports across 4 devices, not even an unknown in device manager.
• Won't accept some of my spindle drives, just show up as "unknown device" in the device manager on Win7, shows as a /dev on Linux but can't recognize it as a drive
• Won't accept ANY of my SSD's, presenting the same issues as some of the spindle drives do

Other Thoughts: I had hoped to use these to both repurpose many of my old drives as externals and to use in troubleshooting without needing to set up a hotswap cage or a cumbersome dock. This was going to be a tool I'd take everywhere with me when I did on site computer repair, now it's looking like a cheap solution in making a 300GB external for my personal travel bag.

Knowing what I'm getting, I'd consider 3 more just to get those older drives back into a workflow. Also, considering my experience has been less than stellar, I'd just as soon find an enclosure by another brand (which would be necessary anyway, being as I'd still have 2 other drives that don't function with this enclosure).

1 out of 5 eggsNot too hot!

Pros: Small, light, cute.

Cons: I have an SSD installed in it, formatted to NTFS. Works on my Win 7 PC, but only in USB 2.0 port. The USB 3 ports will not see it.

My iMac with only USB3 ports will not recognize it at all! Not nearly what I intended, but there is no point in RMAing it, because it was so inexpensive.
