1 out of 5 eggsboff

Pros: nice power button, nice blue LED and choice of 2 colors

Cons: my first Vantec product and I am not impressed
cheap plastic, cheap build, I am really disappointed

i also could only get one drive to work at the same time
only one esata port for 2 drives, not ideal

Other Thoughts: I got this device to replace a iStarUSA XAGE902DU-SAU (out of stock at newegg)

It is not a good replacement, the build quality and design of the iStar is way better.

1 out of 5 eggsPort 1 (rear slot) fails when writing data

Pros: None

Cons: This unit has an ASMedia controller. I have done hours of testing and deduced that Port 1 (rear slot) fails when writing data to a drive in the dock. It will drop the connection as has been reported by others. Port 1 works fine when reading data from a drive however.
Port 2 (front slot) can read and write data with no issues. On a Samsung 830 256GB I'm getting 230MB/s read and 180MB/s write.

5 out of 5 eggsReally nice unit

Pros: I needed a external toaster device that could handle more than 1 drive (in my case 2 2.5 drives), and this fit the bill exactly. I am connected to an E-SATA port not USB. My machine is USB challenged in that I have USB 3 ports but they do not work very well, so I stat away from them. The E-SATA card is also from Vantec so I expected it to work and was not disappointed. Performance is as I expected.

Cons: Does it come in black? Mine is white would have preferred black maybe I should have looked at the Newegg site closer

5 out of 5 eggseSATA didn't work

Pros: USB 3.0 & eSATA. Dual bays. Quality cables.

Cons: lightweight and kinda clunky feeling. eSATA didn't work. Had to RMA it.

Other Thoughts: eSATA would not work on my PC. Didn't have another PC to check it on. Replaced it with ORICO 6518SUS3-BK and it works perfectly.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: It is white.

Cons: This thing recognizes drives and stays in connnection when used with OSX Mountain Lion but has SEVERE problems in Windows 8. When I use this drive with Windows 8, the drive unmounts and mounts itsself every two minutes at random. I'm returning this piece of junk and garbbing a drive dock from a more reputable manufacturer.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, So good...

Pros: Nice cables supporting USB 3.0 and eSATA. Small footprint with enough heft to keep the unit in-place. Able to use both drives at the same time (plug-in both USB and eSATA cables). Large, easy to use, eject buttons. Bright LED's show status of drives and power. Feels well built and packaging was nice.

Cons: Very bright LED's could be a con, to some. Personally, the LED's do not bother me...and make status very easy to check.

Other Thoughts: So far, this unit is worth every penny. Copied files between the drives for several hours. Have not experienced a single issue. I have both cables plugged in and have access to both drives. Have not tested for speed but have not noticed any difference. Also, have not used my SSD, only Western digital drives (1 TB and 500 GB's). The Vantec is replacing my Thermaltake's...which were very disappointing. The single Thermaltake dock died after a year. The dual Thermaltake had a dead PS and eSata side died after a month.
So far, I am very pleased with my purchase and recommend the Vantec highly.

4 out of 5 eggsNexStar Drive Dock

Pros: Works well, small foot print on Desktop. Bothe USB 3.0 and e-sata. Speeds seen up to 70MBS

Cons: White!!! Come on white? shows every mark from drives being inserted/removed. Cant believe it. Wish I could have got it black

Other Thoughts: Buy because you need a working device NOT for looks

5 out of 5 eggsASM1051 inside!!

Pros: ASM1051 inside!! You wonder why I put double explanation sign? I tried to use before another enclosure wiht Jmicron chipset and it constatnly lost connection, which rendered device close to useless. I ran a 50 hour test with NST-D400SU3, filled severla times a 3Tb disk, and had no disconnection. That is why I am so happy. Speed: a harddrive with 180 Mb/s speed when connected to the docking station via USB3 or eSATA had speed around 180 Mb/s. A SSD drive
with speed 380 Mb/s when connected via eSATA had transfer rate 250 Mb/s and 180Mb/s when connected via USB3.

Needless to say, your eSATA controller should have a ort multiplier. Without port multiplier you system will see only one device in the dock.

Looks very pleasant. Apple fanboys should feel jealous. Oh, stop! They will think it is too cheap for them: Apple will charge them at least 5 times more for a similar device, because it needs to have on a payroll a horde of lawers.

Cons: Unfortunately, an extrenely bright LED takes away esthetic deign. In order to cope with light pollution, I had to cover the dock with black paper. VANTEC, take away this abusive LED!

My motherboard (ASUS P9X79PRO) hanged during POST when the device is
attached via USB3 port. If I unplug and plug it back after POST, the dock works flawlessly. I am leaning towards to consider this as a big in mobo's BIOS. I asked ASUS, but they did not bother to answer.

4 out of 5 eggsMisleading description

Pros: Don't know yet, have not plugged it in yet.

Cons: Misleading box description!!!! The packing box says drive support sata I/II//III. When I flip the unit upside down, the label on it says drive support sata I/II and there is NO sata III listed in it! For me it is not a problem, but if you plan to plug in maybe a SSD or something fast hoping for sata III, it is NOT there! If it is, then manufacturer should either make correction to the unit label, or remove the false information from the packing box. This is quite dishonest advertising.

1 out of 5 eggsmarketing shenanigans, just like the others.

Pros: can pass data from 2 drives

Cons: I was hopeful about this unit, but it has shenanigans speed claims, just like the others I've tried. I'm benchmarking on a Corsair Pro SSD that averages 500MB/s sequential read via SATAIII internal. Through this dock (which claims 5Gb/s USB3 and 6Gb/s SATAIII controller) averages only 190MB/s sequential read! Can somebody shed some light on this, or is really just shenanigans marketing?
