A KVM switch (Keyboard-Video-Mouse) is a major boon to anyone who has to work with more than one computer. You can change computers without having to give up the keyboard and monitor you're already using, sometimes via the keyboard itself. Imagine the space and money you'll save, only having to buy one monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
After saying that, KVM switches stop being exciting pretty quickly, so let's look at things to shop for. Will it switch your speakers, too? How about your microphone? Is it USB only, or can it handle older connections? Hardware button, keyboard command control, or both? Does it draw its power from the computer, or does it need a power adapter? How many computers do you need to switch? (Most KVM switches will handle two computers; some can handle more.)
The IOGEAR GCS634U is a 4-port USB KVM switch that lets you manage four PCs with just one set of keyboard, monitor and mouse. With the built-in audio support you can share a set of speakers between four computers. With the plug-and-play feature, connect or remove PCs without powering down the KVM switch or PCs. Is this the switch for you? Check it out and see!

Intel Mac - Win XP - Win98 non usb
- Pros: The unit worked without any issues. The three systems are a Mac intel Pro dual monitors running boot camp to operate both Mac OS and Win XP OS. A Dell Win Xp. A Gateway Win98 without USB support.
The keyboard is a Mac wired. The mouse is a logitech mx310 wired. The only setup was to change the KVM to use the Mac "Control" key and tell the KVM a Mac keyboard was connected. All the special Mac keys work great. My Mac is set to dual boot to support the two OS systems. I find that this works best if I powerup the Mac first because I use the Mac "Option" key to allow the selection of the Mac or XP OS. I also have a second monitor connected directly to the Mac which allows me to watch two different computers at the same time.
I can also use a non USB computer on this switch as long as a second computer is running to power the KVM. This is very helpful when I need to rebuild an old system without USB suport and wish to share only the monitor.
- Cons: The only change that would be helpful is to allow mounting the KVM box if you wanted to locate it under a desk. The present design only allows it to sit on a flat surface.
- Other Thoughts: The design is very nice and the profile is small. I was able to locate the KVM under the flat panel monitor so that I can see the lights that indicate which system is currently connected. The bottom of the unit has a soft pad to prevent it from marking the surface that it is sitting on.
Works Great!
- Pros: Flawless operation. USB components switch over with out a problem.
- Cons: Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock + Enter key combination is sorta cumbersome but I got use to it.
- Other Thoughts: At first I was confused on how the USB connected to each computer because there wasn't a USB connector on each port. But then I found that the USB signal travels on the video cable and terminates at a USB connector. Pretty slick design if you ask me.

Great & simple KVM that works (2 years and counting)
- Pros: Small, easy to setup, easy to use, just works. Continues to work in a win/mac setup after 2+ years of constant use. Great value for the price.
- Cons: VGA vs DVI?
Sometimes there can be some slight video banding / distortion detected (in the background - easily ignored), BUT I do not fault the product - I fault the VGA standard this product is based on. This unit does exactly what it can do with-in the limitations of the tech it is based on.
Great KVM
- Pros: Great KVMA for the price. Replaced an old PS/2 KVM. Unplugged the old unit, plugged this one in while the systems were running, and keyboard/mouse just started working for my Windows an Linux box.
Windows now recognizes my mouse as the Logitech tilt-wheel it is.
Two of the cables are hard-wired, two plug in as needed, so helps reduce clutter, using only as many cables as needed.
USB powered, so freed up a socket on my UPS, as well as the clutter of a power cord. Because I had two sets of speakers, one for each of the primary systems, this also eliminated one set of those.
- Cons: Wall mount would be nice.
Had one instance of restating Windows with the KVM switched to another system. When I switched to Windows, did not recognize the keyboard. Restarted Windows with KVM on that screen, and all worked. Once started, never had any trouble switching between systems.
- Other Thoughts: Don't see any longer cables listed for the removable ones. Looks like a good quality straight through VGA extension would work though.
Works fine
- Pros: Does what is supposed to do. Hot keys work in Linux (Ubuntu).
- Cons: Wish it had a USB hub, push button changing of machines and better lights to indicate when a machine is on as well as when it is the one with focus, but these are just nice to haves that I didn't want to pay extra for
- Other Thoughts: I have a mixed environment of windows (XP, Vista) and Linux (mainly ubuntu) machines that this works fine with. Basically use as a docking station too for work laptops that we bring home. Works fine.
