The IOGEAR DVI KVMP Switch GCS1102 charts a revolutionary new direction in KVM switch functionality by providing an interface for today's digital monitors while integrating a 2-port USB KVM switch with USB 2.0 peripheral sharing capabilities. As a KVM switch, the unit allows the user to access two computers from a single USB keyboard, USB mouse, and monitor, and also share among the computers USB 2.0 peripherals such as external hard drives, printers and scanners.

The GCS1102's independent (asynchronous) switching feature allows the KVM focus to be on one computer while the USB peripheral focus is on another. The user can switch from one computer to another without interrupting print jobs, downloads or other functions being handled by connected peripherals. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate USB hub as well as the need to purchase separate stand-alone peripheral sharers - such as printer servers, modem splitters, etc. The GCS1102 further improves on previous designs with DVI (Digital Video Interface) connectors, and the transfer of keyboard and mouse data to the computers via a fast, reliable USB connection. DVI supports both digital input (flat panel displays, data projectors, plasma displays, digital TVs and set-top boxes) and analog video input (traditional monitors and TVs).

IOGEAR's Display Emulation Technology* reads and remembers the monitor's parameters (EDID) so there is no delay or change of video resolution when switching between, or booting computers.(*IOGEAR’s Display Emulation Technology provides the EDID support for Windows 7)

2 out of 5 eggsWill not work with 120hz monitors

Pros: Solid construction. works with 60 hz monitors.

Cons: This switch DOES NOT work with 120hz monitors, while there is no warning in the product description.
Tried it on Windows 7 PC. If monitor rate set to 120 hz it goes blank.
I even replaced DVI-D Single cable with DVI-D Dual - still does not work.

Other Thoughts: generally solid switch and if you do not have or do not set 120hz refresh rate, the switch works OK.
I gave it 2 eggs because there was nothing in the product description that warned me about it. Support from iogear may be exists, but I could not find it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. To better service you and understand your set up, please feel to contact our customer support at 1-866-946-4327 or email us: support@iogear.com. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

3 out of 5 eggsNot full-featured

Pros: Solid construction.

Cons: Only front USB ports support keyboard-based switching between computers, however those ports do not support anything but the simplest devices. A keyboard with media buttons, for instance, will only work if plugged into the back.

Back in the days of the 2-button mouse, this would have been a wonderful device. As is, it only has two useful USB ports and requires manual switching between computers (which is itself requires holding the button on the KVM for about 3 seconds).

2 out of 5 eggsAncient technology

Pros: Works great right out of the box if you're running a standard (plain vanilla) wired keyboard and analog (DVI-D) video. I've been using this switch for several years without a hitch. A wireless mouse will work fine with the adapter plugged into the front mouse port.

Cons: The cables that come with the switch are DVI-D even though the switch supports DVI-I (cheapskates). You'll have to supply your own DVI-I cables if you want digital video. The switch will not recognize a multi-function keyboard in the front port. You have to use the standard USB ports in the back and you lose all hot-key functionality (meaning manual switching only). Logitech unified receiver will only work for both devices if plugged into the back USB port. Firmware upgrading is a useless feature as there has never been a firmware update to my knowledge.

Other Thoughts: My next KVM switch will prolly be a ConnectPro. A bit more $ but covers all the above issues, at least on paper...

Manufacturer Response:

First, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. In order for hot key operation and instantaneous recognition of the keyboard and mouse when switching computers, our KVMs emulate a standard wired 102 key keyboard and wired generic 2-button scroll wheel mouse. We can not guarantee the use of wireless (including Bluetooth), multifunction, gaming, integrated card readers, or programmable keyboards and mice. This KVM also requires a mouse and keyboard be connected to their respective console ports, so we cannot guarantee the use of docking stations, port replicators or USB / PS2 adapters. Even though the GCS1102 will support DVI-D and DVI-I, we only supply DVI-D KVM cables with the GCS1102. Most customer’s use this KVM with direct DVI connections without the use of VGA-DVI adapters. This would be the only reason for the use of a DVI-I KVM cable. IOGEAR makes a wide variety of KVM's to suite almost all specific needs. Again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks well after false start

Pros: It works with both my Win 7 64 system and my old Linux (CentOS 5) systems. Works with my Microsoft Natural Wireless Ergo Keyboard 7000 and the mouse that came with it. I get sound from both systems and the webcam works with both as well.

Cons: Doesn't work with Logitech wireless - nothing at all with their unifying receiver. One egg downgrade for that.

Other Thoughts: First unit arrived DOA, but spent hours on the phone with tech support before determining it was DOA - wasted too much time on it. Downgrade one egg for DOA unit and the time spent on it.

Plus is NewEgg's RMA worked well (although I hated having to pay for return shipping)

1 out of 5 eggsSending back

Pros: Nice heavy steel box, USB and Audio switching work flawlessly both manually and via hot-key. This part I really liked and I mean REALLY liked.

Cons: Does not really support DVI. Supports one flavor of DVI, specifically DVI digital. If you are trying to switch between two devices which do not output digital DVI, aka DVI-D, you WILL be disappointed. I think IOgear should be ashamed for lying about this box and then blaming the customer.

Other Thoughts: Supposedly the box supports both DVI analog and digital; however, IOGear much to their cheap shame only supplied DVI-D cables. I was trying to switch between home and work laptops, the work being a Dell with a docking station. in both cases I did not DVI digital to work with... only DVI analog.

Fortunately Newegg, once again winning with super customer service, is waving the restocking fee and paying for the units return.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. The GCS1102 does support both analog and digital. You need to use a DVI-I KVM cable in order to pass an analog signal. The GCS1102 is packaged with DVI-D cables only however it supports both analog and digital signals. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent KVM Switch

Pros: Excellent switch!

Cons: Non so far

Other Thoughts: I had to switch to the same, but 4-port switch when I left my old position and switched to another one. Excellent device, stable, very good video quality, and it's digital! I had a few more analog KVM switches but jumped to this one with no doubt and I'm happy with my choice.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks good now...

Pros: Nice heavy case - stays on my desk
Buttons on front for easy switching
Ability to have sound from one machine while working on the other
Works with my USB Microsoft Keyboard/mouse combo

Cons: First one was no good (bad USB Port for the mouse/keyboard)

Other Thoughts: Wishing I had spent the extra moolah on the 4 port model

1 out of 5 eggsNoise on one monitor

Pros: None

Cons: Received it, installed it and one of my monitors was showing noise on the screen. Tried playing with resolution, No go. Unlugged the monitor from the kvm and hooked it up directly to the pc and there were no issues. Tried different cables, no go. Not sure what the issue is, but I will be returning this one.

2 out of 5 eggsNot great

Pros: Maybe it works okay, see below

Cons: I have a dual monitor hook up, with one connected to two computers (dual boot(win xp, linux) and a solaris box) through this KVM.. all sorts of problems.

If I boot windows, it will never detect the monitor hooked up through this KVM and only gives me one display. I have tried saving the EDID info and contacting support nothing. If I turn on the second monitor at just the right time, right as Windows is booting, I can sometimes get the second to turn on, or if i spam saving the edid.. sometimes it works.

Same computer, booting Linux... Basically the same problem, but it is easier to fix here.. I boot to multi user mode, power cycle the second monitor, type startx and it comes up.

3rd computer only one connected, seems to be fine.

Other Thoughts: Wish I would of researched more

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience. The unit you received was probably defective.
