4 out of 5 eggsnot bad

Pros: compact

plug and play

VERY nice tool for recovery and backups

Cons: hot, hot.... HOT!

Other Thoughts: I got this to make use of some of the extra 2.5" HDDs I have laying around. its a perfect solution. cheap, portable, easy to use plug and play operation.

The speeds of this adapter have not bottlenecked on any of my HDDs. The fastest speed I seen was around 160MB/s with a 250GB WD Black under crystalmark. However I have not tried with an SSD. There you might run into USB3 related latency and bandwidth limits.

One thing I need to note here (the reason for 4 starts instead of 5) is that this thing runs HOT! the outside of the case on the adapter side, it becomes almost too hot to touch comfortably. Curious as to why, I opened it up and found a single chip causing all the heat. So I modified the case by drilling a hole in it to make room for a tiny heatsink i applied to the chip thats generating all the heat. this easily added 20x the surface area for cooling but this lil chip still makes the heat sink too hot to touch regardless if its in use or idle.

It would seem this mod should extended the life of this adapter but i can't imagine how long this would last without being modded in a 24/7 work environment.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, easy to use, and can store the adapter plug in the empty case when its not in use.

Transfer speeds on USB 3.0 will easily saturate the read/write of any HDD that will be put in this case, and come pretty close to doing the same for an SSD. That said, why would you ever put an SSD in an external case like this for anything besides the short term for cloning?

Cons: The case lid does have a slight bow to it making the corners protrude about a mm or so, and does not have a positive seal around the edges that would enable this case to serve as a protective travel case rather than just an infrequently used dock.

3 out of 5 eggsOkay

Pros: Works great with small laptop hard drives.

Cons: Does not work with 3.5" desktop hard drives. Not enough power.

Other Thoughts: Sold it after 6 months, I don't do much with laptop hard drives and I needed a good desktop hard drive solution.

5 out of 5 eggsBest. Ever

Pros: This worked so good that I bought another one (at an E-Baysed site for $12.00 cheaper). I deal with either these things only for external SSDs--or I use powered docks for platter drives. Until Thunderbolt for PC replaces USB, this device is as fast as you'll ever get using that particular port.

Cons: Can think of none.

1 out of 5 eggsStop working after few weeks

Pros: cheap

Cons: Stop working after 5 weeks! Try to contact the manufacturer but no response back. Newegg return policy 30 days.... So it will probably go directly in the garbage. Buy something a little more expensive and it will works for years.

2 out of 5 eggsQuit working

Pros: This item worked great at first. It was excellent until it quit working. It just won't power up the drive anymore.

Cons: Quit working after about 10 uses or less.

Other Thoughts: I am actually thinking of buying another one of these to see if it will work longer than this one did. Most other reviews seem pretty happy, I may have gotten a bad one.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work, no support

Pros: If something is simply supposed to work, and it doesn't, I don't see anything to put in this section. How about I didn't lose a lot of money on a worthless device?

Cons: Tried on 2 different systems, and with 2 different drives that I know are good. Both recognized the device and drive as a removable device with no media. Operation of this item should be pretty straightforward, so I don't see a lot of opportunities to screw it up. No drivers involved, everything should be built-in to Windows. I tried going to the manufacturer's web site and perusing their support page. Well, that didn't work, the page was unreachable. Tried sending an email to them to ask for a little help. That was 6 days ago, and have yet to see any kind of response to my inquiry. I've considered sending it back, and, for the price, it just seems like a hassle. "You gets what you pay for", I guess. I learned not to patronize this brand anymore, at least.
