OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
BFG proves once again that they have their finger on the pulse of the gaming community. The MX 550 is a highly efficient power supply at a reasonable price. They wrapped the whole thing in a black chrome finish that will enhance the look of any gaming rig.

They recognized that gamers need stable power that’s why this is a quad +12V rail system. That keeps power balanced across all components, even if you load all the connectors. Which would be hard to do since there are 3xPCIe, 7xMolex, 8xSATA and 2xFloppy. All of the modular cables are sleeved for better air flow in the case and easier cable management.

The 140mm intake fan keeps air moving over the internal components to increase both efficiency and product life. An 80mm helper fan kicks in if the temperature gets too high. Thermal Control Technology regulates the fan speed to deliver the optimal balance between fan noise and cooling.

It works, but....

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: It provides stable power for my Phenom X4 9950/ Radeon 4850 Crossfire system....
Cons: Had several fan related problems. First, the internal bundle of wires was making contact with the fan. This created a rather obnoxious noise. I should have returned it at this point but I figured I could easily fix it myself, which I did. Second, after a few weeks of use the fan began making making a rattling noise which increased during heavy use. I replaced the internal fan myself and the power supply has been problem free ever since.
Other Thoughts: Throughout all of it's problems it always provided stable power. Tighter quality control on BFG's part could have prevented these troubles.

I wanted to like this PSU ...

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Had some favorable internet reviews which led me to try the BFG MX550 out. BFG Customer Service was responsive to my calls.
Cons: First unit received died Two Minutes after installation. Called BFG Customer Service and described the problem and they said to RMA. Great turnaround by Newegg, received the second PSU within one week after shipping back the original. The second unit had excessories that were not with the original unit (velcro straps & tie wraps, hmmm was the original an RMA?) but when I took it out of the box and it's bubble wrap bag, two screws fell out. Re installed the screws and installed into a new build and ..... Nothing! Customer Service at BFG said to RMA again, but this time I went for a Refund and a different brand of PSU. Again Great Service from Newegg, Refund has been received and a new Working 550W PSU from __Z has been installed and is running great.
Other Thoughts: Like the title says, I wanted to like this PSU, but after being burned with two DOA's in a row, I went with another brand. However, even with the problems, I have to say Thank You Newegg for your Great Customer Service and fast turnaround on the RMA's and Refund!
