2 out of 5 eggscorrection to below

Pros: Excuse my typo below. I typed "Sata 3" where I meant "3 Gb/sec".

Note: These units are misrepresented and are actually only Sata 1, 1.5 Gb/sec and use the JM20316, Not the JM20336.

Cons: See review below

2 out of 5 eggsThese are only Sata 1.5 not 3.0!

Pros: Decent fit and finish. Cartridges are a little roughly finished/textured so you don't get a smooth insertion like we had with the discontinued EZ-Swap-EX. Works pretty well except for the major hiccup listed below in Cons (SATA1 not SATA2 as listed).

Cons: I was astounded to see a HD mounted on this unit shown in LSI storage manager as having a negotiated link speed of only 1.5 gb (sata1). This was when it was attached to a IBM M1015.

I drilled down a bit and verified the same 1.5 gb connection when the unit was attached to a motherboard with the Intel matrix r10 chip (via the rapid storage manager software). The board was examined and compared to one from an EZ-Swap-EX as it seemed identical. Unlike what the details page lists, the Startech units I received have a *** JMicron JM20316 *** instead of a JM20336. I then moved the HD from the Startech unit showing the 1.5 link to one of my EZ-Swap_EX units with a verified JM20336. It did then show a link speed of 3gb - I think it fairly conclusive the JM20316 chip installed on the Startech is the problem.

I can't find a listing for this chip and can only assume it is an old surplus SATA 1 chip.

Other Thoughts: I don't know if every unit shipped has this older SATA 1 chip. All the ones I received did. The details page clearly states "SATA 3" and "Uses JM20336" so there is a serious problem here that needs to be remedied by Newegg and Startech. The details page needs to be changed to reflect the true product being sold, or the product needs to be recalled and replaced with what customers were told they were buying.

PS
I was very excited to see these as a replacement for the EZ-Swap-EX which is no longer available and planned to buy many of the Startech units. I used the EZ in most all of my machines and my client's servers as a rock solid, workable, affordable backup cartridge system. It was very disappointing to see them no longer available. This Startech unit would be the perfect replacement if reshipped with the JM20336. I would then recommend it highly as the other aspects of the product are good, and with a great price.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat product

Pros: super portable for usb; can be used anywhere. fast sata speeds when used at home / work. multiple 3.5 inch bay adapters allow for 1 hd to store all files, no need to sync machines. when used with usb cable, drive can approach 45 C under heavy use, idles around 38.

drive used: WD blue caviar 5400 rpm 320 GB.

Cons: drive can get hot when used in 3.5 inch adapter. I cut a hole in top of 3.5 inch adapter case and mounted 80 mm fan; works fine, temps below 44C max.

Other Thoughts: should make controller able to handle newer larger format drives such as 750 GB? Current limit is 500 GB.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Functional

Pros: Compact Enclosure, SATA speeds internal, USB Mini Outside, Great use of floppy power connector from PSU, Best use of 3.5" External Bay on PC, able to buy just enclosures separately!!!

Cons: Bay is plastic and not extremely well build (- 1 egg). Of the dozen or more I've installed though I've had only minor issues on a couple and none have failed beyond use.

Other Thoughts: Plastic bay is not a problem if securely fastened on all sides and I have made countless inserts/ejects with no failure.

For the price this bay+enclosure and optional additional enclosures (separate purchase) offer a great value in functionality. Coupled with a HotSwapping program that terminates the SATA drive from the Windows OS and this becomes a hot swappable backup/temp/other drive for any storage needs.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice

Pros: * Solid - Everything is very well made
* Extra enclosures available (P/N SAT2510U2S)
* Alignment rails on bay, grooves on enclosure

Cons: * None at this time

Other Thoughts: I'm using this to replace the ineo equivalent also sold by Newegg. There wasn't anything actually wrong with ineo setup. After some use, I simply got tired of the back lit words--I prefer the indication method used by this system.

I use 7 Kingston SV100S2/64GZ SSD's with this and 6 more of P/N SAT2510U2S for my home server backup (via udev rules and an anachron script). This works very efficiently.

5 out of 5 eggsGood choice

Pros: Very solid feel. I like that there is a door that closes the opening when the drive is removed. Drive has positive lock when inserted and is smaller than some others. The sata is fast and supports hot swap (see cons)

Cons: The sata did not support hot swap when connected to my mobo i had to purchase a separate sata card for it to work. USB worked fine externally but did require two usb cables. One for the data and the second for the power ( both included) just don't loose the power cable.

Other Thoughts: The chassis only has sata I wish it had usb it would have made hookup alot easier.

5 out of 5 eggsVery worthwhile product

Pros: Very nice, efficient way of adding semi-permanent storage.
Uses standard SATA hookups on removable enclosure, and as such can be directly attached to your motherboard without removal.
Compatable with Rosewill RX251-ITRAY/RX251-STRAY.
Works with larger drives than specifications state.
Very solid feel during insertion/ejection of drive.
Very solid build in general, and a well thought out design.
When the drive is ejected, the eject button retracts, leaving a flush face.

Cons: Would be nice if the specifications included more thorough testing of drive size compatibility. Tech support stated the largest tested size was 250GB, and stated also that it should work with larger. I can confirm a 320G Seagate Momentus 7200.3 will work, and others will likely function as well.

Other Thoughts: Identical to Rosewill RX251-US series of enclosures, and is fully compatable with them (tested RX251-STRAY, RX251-ITRAY). While they are no longer manufactured, it's handy to know that if you have them, they can still be put to good use in this dock.
Does not ship with a often unused Y dongle, instead uses a secondary USB power adapter for older drives.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Awesome product, the drive enclosure can be tricky to put together (the drive and circuit board only fits into the enclosure one way) but it is very clean.

Cons: None I could find.

Other Thoughts: I have bought four of these (3 after I bought and used the first one) and they work great. As easy to install as a CD/DVD Drive and gives a nice clean way to mount SSD's (and other small drives). Also comes with cables to hook the drive (inside the enclosure) up as an external drive so you can use the entire unit inside your main system for a backup drive and easily pop the drive out to hook it up externally to another computer.

3 out of 5 eggsShame on Newegg

Pros: This is identical to the Rosewill RX251-US drive enclosure. Just don't know if they are completely interchangeable (seems like they should be).

Cons: Newegg discontinued the Rosewill 3.5" drive that the RX251 HDD tray they are selling fits into. (N82E16817182112 = 3.5" drive, N82E16817182113 = HDD tray).

Other Thoughts: Now, instead of being able to buy the Rosewill enclosure (that allows you to mount the drive in a desktop) for around thirty, if you still need the internal enclosure, you have to buy the this enclosure at twice that price. Oh yeah, and Newegg is the only Rosewill dealer, per Rosewill's website.
