Pros: Large storage capacity, Small footprint, hot swappable bays, runs cool, works like its supposed to. I am currently using 4- 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green drives. With these drives running 24/7 for the last 3 weeks the air coming out of this system is actually cool, not warm at all. Raid 5 does work with a card that supports it.
Cons: Slightly loud fan. No raid 5 with the supplied card.
Other Thoughts: Upgrading to a raid 5 card is a must

does not work on LINUX

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Works fine on Windows
Cons: Looks like the sata_sil24 driver does not work on LINUX. period. It drops the SCSI link, then looses the drives and their device files. When it does this it somehow wipes the partition table, and all data is lost. Since it works on Windows, I think that the hardware is OK, just that the driver does not work reliably.
Other Thoughts: We have compiled custom kernels with sata_sil24 at the latest version for 2.6.29, both as a module and static. Still, similar results. The device files go away, and something on the partition tables wipes the LVM setup, and data is lost.
It is very misleading that this was advertised as having LINUX support. It clearly does not.

Great Unit!
Reviewed By: hutchpuppy on 2/2/2009
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Large storage capacity, running 4 1TB drives with no issues. Great Media Center storage unit. Has overide switch to turn off fan. Power supply is located on cord like a laptop, so no additional heat in case. Had all 4 drives copying over 2 TB of data for over 6 hours straight and never had a hiccup, even played a DVD in VMC. during. Using all new Seagate Barracuda drives in JBOD mode. Looks awesome!
Cons: Fan is rahter loud, but moves good air. Have email in to Startech to get exact dimensions and will replace soon. No RAID 5.
Other Thoughts: Highly recommend for a cheap, sleek looking small form factor unit.
