Does this need external power (like connection to an outlet) or is it just a USB connection?

You will need an external power outlet (wall receptical) for this one (no 2-piece power supply cord with power block, just one single, thin-wired adapter not unlike a cell phone's charger). It has an ON/OFF switch along with a Standard-B USB in the back of it to connect to the regular USB ports on your PC. This model also has some weight to it, feels sturdy. That is all I can say as mine still sits in a drawer untested for the couple of years I've owned it now.

Question 2

I have this laptop hard drive: (Google search 511876-001 and click on the third link, impactcomputers dot com)
Will this dock work? My laptop hard drive will not boot into Windows, so I need some sort of dock or enclosure to retrieve the files from the bad hard drive. Is this product the solution?

Hi, Josh,

I purchased this unit and it worked fine on all drives I plugged into it. It does not take power from the USB as it has its own power supply and it is ONLY SATA.

Actually all the StarTech devices I've purchased have been good.

If a Windows machine doesn't "see" your drive after you put it in the Dock you might try a computer running Linux. I use Puppy because it's small and you can install it on either a USB Thumb drive or a CD.

Question 3

Does this come with a cd with software requiring a download to make this work? My CD drive does not work.

Mine did not but you won't need it. It's plug and play, meaning windows will find a driver when you plug it in. Worked for me

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80 GB hard drive model ST380011A.  Will it work in this device?

ST380011A is a IDE model, but this adapter supports only SATA connections, so unfortunately no.

You could look at any of the external enclosures for IDE devices though, they have quite a few here in Newegg even cheaper than this (as long as you´re looking for a single HDD enclosure).

What is the voltage that it takes? (does it have an internal transformer that takes 100-240V?)

Transformer is external where it plugs in the wall. 110 volt.

Is the power supply required, because I lost mine.  If so how do I acquire another?

Yes, this requires a power supply.  The model number on my power supply is HK-AX-120A200-US and its specs are 12V 2A 5.5/2.1mm AC Power Adapter Charger.
