1 out of 5 eggsNot worth the time

Pros: Can dock four hard drives of 2.5" & 3.5" in size and offers USB 3.0 making for amazing speed when it works.

Cons: Where to start... I have had to RMA this product twice, the second time I put in for a refund instead of a replacement as this item is too expensive to be shipping back and forth.

As stated in several other reviews, horrible firmware as when you dock an additional hard drive it resets connections to all hard drives and the same thing happens when you remove or power off any hard drive which leads to corrupted data on the other drives if you're transferring any files (The manual says they only have to re-connect, which is false as the drives do stop spinning and restart spinning with an audible click). That is also a huge minus if you're actually using the hot swap feature as that means more drive stops and restarts shortening the life of your drive or should I say even just powering off a drive you're not using as they get hot. One last thing in the horrible firmware department has been mentioned in another review is the loop. Sometimes when you add a drive or power off a drive they all go into a restarting/disconnecting loop sometimes only solved by powering all drives off and then on again. Not sure if the last one is firmware or just another faulty station, but it did it with both stations.

My biggest problem was with the first one I got, any file transfer that took more than 15~20 seconds would cause all the hard drives to reset and the file transfer to fail.

The problem with the second one was the same, except for some reason it would randomly happen somewhere between the 20~30 minute mark of the transfer. Definitely not good if you're trying to back up a hard drive.

Lastly, the fans in the bay are junk as they do next to nothing to keep the hard drives cool as in both cases I would turn the fans all the way up but there is no air flow over the hard drives themselves and they get warm pretty quickly.

Other Thoughts: Looking at other reviews and from my experience, this station is not worth the money at all. Between often being returned to questionable firmware I would rather get a USB hub and connect several single docks to it. A lot less hassle than this product as well as cheaper.

1 out of 5 eggsMine was DOA

Pros: Seemed like what I wanted

Cons: but it didn't work. The power light came on for only 1 of 4 of the slots. The other slots were obviously broken (disk didn't spin up). Given others' comments about problems, I decided to return it and try another manufacturer.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome solution (Mac/PC/USB 3/Dock)

Pros: I bought this with a WD 3TB Red Drive (Item #: N82E16822236344) and it has been a great experience. I only have one drive in it right now though, so I am curious to see how it handles 4.

Cons: Not a great solution for carrying to and from work, so I'm actually here to buy one for home, so I only need to transport the drive.

Other Thoughts: For more info see my review of the drive (Item #: N82E16822236344)

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks cool. Sucessful in performing simultaneous full format of two 3TB drives.

Cons: Unstable. Formatting a drive in the unit failed when I used an optical drive attached to the mombo. With four drives in the unit I tried to format two drives and copy data to two more drives. After a few hours all four operations failed with errors in the event log. There's no point in having multiple bays if you can't reliably perform multiple simultaneous operations.

Other Thoughts: This is the first time I've ever had a complaint about a StarTech product. It really pains me to write a negative review, but this product has wasted many hours of my time. I have a fast, stable, rock-solid i7 Win7-64 machine that is not bogged down with processes. I should have gotten a two bay unit and saved desk space.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: See Other Thoughts

Cons: See Other Thoughts

Other Thoughts: Just a quick update/correction to my earlier post. I turned on all 4 drives, then I turned on (booted up) my laptop, and all 4 drives were recognized with no delay or problems.

Maybe I had problems earlier, because of the bad HD that I had in the dock.

Again, very pleased with this product!

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic 4 port HD Docking Station!

Pros: Very impressed with the Startech 4 bay docking station. My custom built, overclocked home computer died , and I wanted to wait until Intel Ivy Bridge processors comes out, so I wanted to use my i5 laptop as my "home" computer until then. However, my home computer had 3 hard drives in it, and I now have a Dune Media Player that has TWO hot swappable sata HD docks, so I am constantly moving a HD between the media center and my computer.

VERY IMPORTANT: your e-SATA port must support "Port Multiplier" function, otherwize you will be able to only see on HD. My built in e-sata port on my Dell e6410 does not support port multiplier, so I also purchased a StarTech ECESAT32 ExpressCard to use with the docking station, and they work perfectly! I juse the built in eSATA card for my Blu-Ray DVD reader.so now, I have all the functionality and HD speed of my old Desktop (Dual core AMD Opteron), and the speed of an i5 processor, so I am happy!

Cons: No "Cons" per say, but I did have to learn the "personality" of this docking station!

Make sure you are using the latest firmware, available at www.startech.com.

First couple of times, this device did not work at all. So, I find that there is a firmware upgrade, and apply it, but discover that my dock was already at the current firmware, but now the dock seemed to work better, but still not perfect.

Like people, this device has a bit of a unique personality, and I had to learn how to understand and "motivate" the personality of this wonderful HD docking station! See comments in "Other Thoughts".

Other Thoughts: As I discovered how to work with the "personality" of this device, the docking station started working perfectly! Here is what I found:

The docking station does not like broken Hard Drives! HD3 was broken (I did not know this), and my laptop would not recognize HD3 and HD4. Tested each drive on the built in eSata port, discovered that HD3 was broken, and things started working better, but still not perfect.

Booting the Laptop with all 4 HD's turned on, seemed to be a problem, the laptop still would not see all the HDs. However, I discovered, that if I boot the laptop with all 4 HD turned off on the dock, then power on HD1, wait until my laptop recognises HD1, then power on HD2 etc, all 4 HDs work perfectly.

I am very happy with this 4 HD Docking station.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: This is a very nice dock. Love the fans and I cant even hear them. But WOW is this thing BIG.

Cons: None really, Except I wish it had thermal sensors to see the temps of the drives.

Wish the SATAIII speeds were the same with this as internally.

SataIII speeds internally are around 140-145 mb/s
With this, They are 90-110 mb/s

Other Thoughts: Love it.

5 out of 5 eggsAHCI is advanced power management for hard drives!

Pros: It's about time USB 3.0 came out. With blurays movies files are getting big

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I think the problem that people are having is that they are using IDE mode in their BIOS and not AHCI. I used IDE in mine in order to get my SATA III hard drives to play nice with my SATA Bluray drive. I added a different brand SATA USB Dock and it was constantly disconnecting the drive. It occurred to me that AHCI is a Vista/Windows 7 feature and it allows hot-swapping your drives without killing your system. With IDE mode you must shut down your system. Use AHCI and see if that fixes it. I returned two USB 3.0 docks and I may have made a mistake in doing so. I am going to give this StarTech USB 4 dock a try today and will report back.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice unit

Pros: Works as advertised; Fantastic internal transfer speeds over eSATA >110MB/sec; lightweight unit; includes 24" USB3.0 cable and 36" eSATA cable

Cons: Shoddy build...one of the internal fans is grinding making horrible noises

Other Thoughts: Going into the purchase I was looking forward to the USB3.0 interface for the speed, but it turns out the eSATA interface ends up being the faster of the two. Moving data internally over USB3.0 was around 40-60MB/sec over eSATA it was ~110-130MB/sec. I was totally not expecting eSATA speeds to be this great. I really like the unit, but because of the grinding fan it will have to RMAed for a new unit.

The owner's manual talks about powering off one drive will momentarily disconnect all drives. I knew this before buying but luckily the lastest firmware remedied the problem so now the power button can be pressed at will without effecting the other drives.

But the best feature of all is the power brick....no walwart.
