Pros: Update: they sent me a new unit and I opted to give them my CC number to charge me, so I get a replacement in a couple days rather than wait 3 weeks. It took about 3 weeks or so to get my refund on my CC, but I did get it. I have to say tech support and returns are handled Ok, not great. 3 weeks turn around for warranty service i think is a little long.

Cons: Well, even after I got the new unit no good, it still wouldn't recognize one of four 3TB seagate barracda drives. If I put the drive in my PC works perfect, but in the raid box no good. I finally had to swap it. I never did get an answer as to why even with one failed drive I couldn't get to my data as I'm running raid 5. Was running fine for another month now another drive is acting funny, had to rebuild twice. I'm thinking this seagate drives are good for about year then they start to fail.

Other Thoughts: If you have the cash go for a better unit.. if not this will due.

2 out of 5 eggsafter 11months problems. not thrilled with startech tech support or return policy

Pros: Price

Cons: failed after 11months, replacement takes normally 3 weeks. Mix results with tech support. Would I buy again? I don't know well see how my RMA works out.. looks like the old saying you get what you pay for but I'll reserve judgement until RMA is processed.

Other Thoughts: So, after 11 months, unit isn't working. Slot 1 thinks there is a bad hard drive, yet if it's raid 5 I still should be able to access data and I cant, unit just sits there and does nothing. Replacing a drive with a brand new drive that is empty not even formatted etc doesn't resolve.. does not put it in a rebuild status nothing. And actually, the drive in slot 1 doesn't appear to be bad anyway. Tech support takes a while to answer, avg is 20min wait time or longer. I can live with that as long as they resovle the issue. I was promised a call back twice and nothing no return call, tech claimed his system went down and lost my info, but when I called back and spoke to someone else my call was logged humm.. after 2 additional days with no call back I called back and this time I wasn't getting off the phone. Finally issued me an RMA, but RMA take 3 weeks is what I was told. They have a cross shipment option where unit is replaced in 48 hours, they take credit card info and when old unit is returned they remove the charge. Let's see what happens..

Pros: Cheap, Hot Plug Hard Drive replacement, USB 3,0 and eSATA interfaces, low noise, good performance, and good Raid support.

Cons: The only con is the front face plate is held on cheaply, and there is no monitoring software to tell you if a drive failed you have manually look at your device to see if I drive fails.

Pros: Inexpensive; in RAID 5 configuration it copies files fast, small footprint, holds 4 drives.

Cons: cheap case and plastic cover, power plug on side is a bit awkward, hard to read led's; setup of RAID options could be better

Other Thoughts: We purchased 3 of these RAID enclosures to use as backup for various servers. We used 7200k 3TB drives and unit functions well. settings are a little crazy but overall the units have performed well and at a price pint that is attractive. Don't bother putting slower drives in this enclosure.

Pros: Unknown

Cons: Well when I first opened the box, the power adapter had been crushed but it still managed to fit into the power port of the case, but the I powered up the system which defaulted to raid 5, which is what I was planning on doing. It responded with "hard drive error" so I removed each hard drive and tested them individually in my tower and they all worked. Went to switch to the no raid set up to try and isolate which drive it thinks is faulty and the raid confirmation button on the back of the device doesn't seem to work. So I tried each drive individually anyways and it said all 4 of my drives were faulty... Going to try this firmware upgrade to see if it fixes ALL of these problems. If not I will be requesting my money back and getting a different external enclosure.
