5 out of 5 eggsWorks with 2TB drive on XBOX ONE

This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD/HDD Enclosure w/ UASP - SATA 6 Gbps - Portable USB 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure – Aluminum

Pros: Works with 2TB drive - product specs only said tested to 1TB.
Works with XBOX one just fine as USB 3.0 powered drive
Sturdy, compact, unobtrusive, aluminum case.
Drive secured with screws. Drive tray secured in outer housing with screws. Drive PCB not exposed near outer shell.
Comes with good cable and one long enough to front/side place on Xbox yet comfortably reach around and plug into the back.

Cons: Could come with some felt or plastic feet or plastic.

Other Thoughts: My first Startech product and I'm very pleased. It's well made and the most up to date on all current technologies.

Case gets a bit warm on use - but not hotter than a drive runs at. So I think it's adequately conducting heat out. It does have front vents. It's on it's side next to the XBOX ONE. I added side edge bottom feet (not included) to raise/isolate it some. Secondarily I added bumpers to ensure a gap if the Xbox was pressed against it on the shelf.

I researched a ALL of the NewEgg enclosures of this type. Most others had issues such as
- plastic case; even if sturdy doesn't conduct heat out like an aluminum case
- Real drive capacity limitations such as 512 or 1TB
- Systemic reliability issues reported by reviewers
- Pseudo "USB 3" port upgrades to what is/was a USB 2.0 product. So not reliabily matching speeds
- SATA II support - or "SATA III Compatability" which can mean it won't choke on SATA III but will only run at SATA II speeds.

5 out of 5 eggsx) Great case.

This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD/HDD Enclosure w/ UASP - SATA 6 Gbps - Portable USB 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure – Aluminum

Pros: Good enough for me.

Never benched on this, but hey, it won't give me any error of 200GB+ file transfer which didn't even take 2 hours.

I'm fine with that. x)

Cons: So far, none.

Other Thoughts: Would buy a few more. when I get more SSDs. x)

4 out of 5 eggsIS USB 2.0 Compatible

This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD/HDD Enclosure w/ UASP - SATA 6 Gbps - Portable USB 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure – Aluminum

Pros: Notice the funny micro USB 3.0 connector on the case?? The larger section is a USB2.0 port and the smaller additional section is the additional wires needed for USB 3.0. Plus this is real hard - the specifications state that it is USB 2.0 backwards capable. WOW!!
Note one other thing - USB3.0 can deliver more power on some/most ports. Therefore there is a chance that a USB 2.0 port can't run a hard drive. Some drives require just a little more power than a port can deliver. Older cases often came with a second USB cable that brought power in from a second USB port if you had a problem.

Cons: UASP not supported by all ports, and won,t really help a mechanical hard drive on USB 3.0. Great for SSD's in the right situation.

Other Thoughts: When you have a problem with hardware, always remember to learn something before typing, please!

3 out of 5 eggsNot backward USB 2.0 compatible

This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD/HDD Enclosure w/ UASP - SATA 6 Gbps - Portable USB 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure – Aluminum

Pros: Wok fine and fast on USB 3.0 like spected.

Cons: Not backward USB 2.0 compatible.
usually one thinks that if USB 3.0 should be USB 2.0 comaptible but they don't said nothing in the box
SatrTech have other models that are USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 compatible

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but lacking a bit.

This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD/HDD Enclosure w/ UASP - SATA 6 Gbps - Portable USB 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure – Aluminum

Pros: Connects my SATA III drives via USB 3.0 as advertised. Nice read and write speeds. Portable. Just what I wanted.

Cons: USB Cable is super short.

I bought this drive so I could create a portable Linux operating system. IT DOES NOT ALLOW BOOTABLE LINUX. GRUB, GRUB2, and LILO will not be allowed to write through the enclosure's controller. This applies to GRUB and LILO for Linux OS boot ONLY.

Other Thoughts: Windows boot loaders function as intended. Pendrive Linux applications will work on this unit because it uses FAT32.

5 out of 5 eggsThis+SSD/30GB written in 2 mins !

This review is from: StarTech.com 2.5in USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD/HDD Enclosure w/ UASP - SATA 6 Gbps - Portable USB 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure – Aluminum

Pros: SATAIII 6Gbps drive support
UASP - massive difference in performance vs typical USB 3.0 enclosures when used with SSD's
Less CPU Load
Small and excellent build quality.

Cons: None as long as the micro 3.0 connector holds up, which seems to be a weak point in a lot of other enclosures I've had. requires hardware support for UASP on the computer to take advantage of benifits over mass storage mode, but cant fault it for that

Other Thoughts: I have probably 25 or so various USB 2.5" drive enclosures and about 10 are USB 3.0, but this is my 1st with UASP. Im always looking to get the fastest external storage devices. With a Corsair Force GT 240GB or Samsung 840pro 256GB, this enclosure really shows what UASP can do. First thing I did was copy a 31GB Virtual machine from my 13"MBP retina. it was about a second or 2 over 2 mins!!! I am totally stunned how much of the bottleneck was eliminated by a better transfer protocol. not sure if any other advantages would translate to an old school spinning drive not maxing it out.
build quality is top notch. very sold with the drive being very snug. just barely larger than the bare drive. In fact its the smallest enclosure I have now as well as the fastest. I never liked now much larger DIY enclosures were compared to retail usb drives like WD passports and alike. well this is narrower than a last gen WD passport and only like 1cm longer.
After seeing what this can do I just got their USB3 Sata3 UASP cable adapter for other drives. I used to carry a mSATA Mushkin Atlas SDD in a USB 3.0 enclosure and thought that was fast. well this crushes it. Haven't checked IOPS through it but it feels fast enough that I could run VM's from it without a problem.
