Solid PSU for a Budget Build
- Pros: Inexpensive when on sale with free shipping. 120mm fan is pretty quiet & moves some air. Rails seem pretty steady. Tons of modular cables! Will power most high-end video cards. 3 year warranty isn't that bad either (pretty standard nowdays) Exterior finish is a nice touch. Mushkin customer service is usually very good.
My rig:
AMD X2 6000 CPU 125 Watt Windsor (stock) 250 GB WD HD HIS 4890 1GB Video Card 2 92mm Fans Lite on DVD Drive 4 GD A-Data PC6400 800 Edimax Network Card Win XP
- Cons: Could do without the green light show. Sorry...But I'm older & don't care for the fluff. Not worth full price with shipping. There are much better PSU's on the market.
- Other Thoughts: This is a middle of the road PSU. Not great, not horrible. Topower makes all of Mushkin's PSU. Topwer again is just ok to decent. This isn't a Seasonic/Corsair build quality unit by any means. But then again, they don't cost as much. I must mention that I purchased the Mushkin AP-580 watt PSU, which is almost the same extact PSU. Mushkin is selling off their current PSU to make way for their new "Volta" line which again is made my Topower.
I recommend this PSU "if" it's on sale with free shipping. I paid forty dollars for my Mushkin AP-580 PSU with free shipping. But keep in mind I'm had to send away for a thirty dollar rebate. So..I paid Seventy dollars upfront. I never had an issue with Mushkin & their rebates (3 times now) Also...This PSU is for my backup WIN XP gaming rig in the basement. I don't think I would buy a Mushkin in my main system ever. Would spend more money & purchase something from a higher-end PSU company.
Best Power Supply Evar!
- Pros: This is easily the best power supply I've ever used. In terms of reliability performance, overall design, style, and longevity. I bought it in 2007 for an athlon64 3800+ system. It's still in use today, powering my massively overclocked Q6600 system. Very impressive.
- Cons: None, amazingly.
- Other Thoughts: Mushkin made a believer out of me.
Excellent PSU
- Pros: I've never been so impressed with a power supply. Aside from functioning as advertised, it's the tiny details that put it a step above the rest. Automatic input voltage detection, ferrite cores, a grounding cable... it's almost as if an actual electrical engineer designed this!
Aesthetically it takes a minimalist approach across the board right down to the packaging. The only notable features are a green LED on the back and the glossy finish covering the whole unit. Looks quite nice in my opinion.
Manual contains a wealth of information such as timing diagrams and wire harness diagrams not normally seen in consumer products.
- Cons: Modular cable compatibility is deceptive. I used this as a replacement for another modular power supply of a different brand thinking I could replace it without re-running all the peripheral cables. Even though the cables fit the same connectors on the PSU, it didn't work. Fortunately, the computer simply refused to turn on rather than frying everything plugged into it.
The cables that run to the video card have a rubberized coating reducing their bend radius. Even in a large case, there is usually very little space between the video card and hard drives, and this cable could cause a tight squeeze.
- Other Thoughts: Mail-in rebates should be outlawed.
