1 out of 5 eggsNippon dock lasted about 13 months

Pros: Similar to another brand sold here, actually almost identical (probably made the same whomever). Worked okay when working but....

Cons: ....after about 13 months, it has decided not to boot or mount my drive. It seems like a simple device..not much to it...how can it go wrong. Appropriate warranty, 1 yr (12 months), and after that it's a lottery. (So far, my other brand is still working and I've had it longer. Fingers crossed.) Please read other thoughts if interested.

Other Thoughts: The last 5 years, from my own experience and from what I've read here or elsewhere, I have concluded that electronics manufacturers have been using the consumers as their "R&D". I think that they put many products out there that may have worked but not thoroughly tested to withstand a lot of usage; Or, they introduce products that barely work and then they toss them out there and "see what happens". Consumers need to make a stand and stop this non-sense. Look at plasma TVS - burn-ins! How can you have burn-ins for a $10,000 TV? And then LCDs, and LEDs, and now 3-D. Come on - why don't they perfect something before going to a new technology. Or, if the previous technology was not that good, how can they tout it as the latest and greatest thing, only for it to last about 1 yr. while they prey and take advantage of the impatient consumers. It's no wonder that the world economy is in the crapper!
BTW, I've always been happy with NewEgg.

3 out of 5 eggstrouble with win7 - 64

Pros: I have a previous review on here - can't find; works fine with xp.

Cons: This is the _only_ usb device I have trouble with - incorrect driver seems to be used as win7 -64 does not see it as a drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat device ! ! !

Pros: This gadget is a live saver ! ! ! I can swap any Sata1/2 drives in it and they are recognized right away. No more dedicated external drives for me! Don't listen to those who said the door is flimsy. I think they reviewed the wrong dock. Trust me. I am not easy on a $30 tool. I've banged 3.5 " drives through the door at least 30 times just this week. I even pried on it a little to see if it would snap. Nothing. It's still there. I am going to try a little harder next time because I have no real use for the little door. Otherwise is seems tough enough.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Wish I had one of these about 15 yrs ago ! ! !

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast no-brainer install, easy to pop-in a hard drive. Already used it to remove viruses from a laptop hard drive with great ease. Weighted bottom prevents tipping or instability at all. HD fits in tightly and securely. eSATA worked smoothly and quickly.

Cons: Power button would be better on the front or top. eSATA cable is short.

Other Thoughts: Excellent piece of equipment for fixing peoples' computers (namely removal of viruses) with no effort.

4 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: very fast USB speeds: fastest usb hard drive I've used. eSATA benchmarks the same speed as my internal SATA. Counterweight keeps hard drive balanced. Laptop and desktop drives plug in without any extra effort. Allows me to keep my storage drive turned off when not in use and pulls its heat generation out of the case.

It's worth noting that after 10 years of Symantec Ghost experience and an entire weekend trying to clone to a properly offset SSD in a desktop PC, using this dock from the laptop I was trying to clone was the only method which I could get the SSD cloned and booting.

I got this because it was free with the drive I was buying, but now I'd buy this over an enclosure every time.

Cons: Power button on the back, so annoying to turn off with my computer nightly.

Cables excessively short: you have to work to make the cables reach anything but a computer on the desktop with this. eSATA cable, partially due to length, comes out of both my eSATA port and the dock extremely easily. None of this is a deal breaker, just realize you've got 3 feet to work with when you buy this.

Other Thoughts: SATA in IDE mode will require a reboot to detect this on eSATA setting, and you can't switch from IDE mode without a reinstall/repair of operating system. Hot-swap eSata will be nice when I upgrade XP to Win7, but I'm not sacrificing to USB speed to get hot-swap.

5 out of 5 eggsTen Star Product

Pros: This is one of the nicest computer products I've purchased in 25 years in this business.

This is truly plug and play ( easier to use than a radio ).

It is sturdy, looks good and weighted so it will not tip over.

Cons: None............................

Other Thoughts: The people at Nippon Labs ( and NewEgg ) are are great to talk to if you have a problem..............

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive Functionality

Pros: Solid base, includes all necessary cables, works as well as expected

Cons: Manual is a little sparse but in all actuality, it is a pretty simple device. Power supply, though fairly generic, is my only concern and it hasn't given me trouble, just an observation.

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a second, travel unit. I am forever needing a method to move large volumes of data where no high speed network exists. This has worked beautifully with USB and eSATA. I've backed up with eSATA and retrieved with USB with no problems. Pair this with a 1TB drive and don't worry about it.
