4 out of 5 eggsNice Product But Fans are an issue

Pros: Convenient
Convenient
Convenient
Nothing could be easier than this.

Cons: Plugs are a bit tricky, but not impossible. My issue is with the two fans in the back. I have replaced the fans THREE times already... After some time, they start making a LOT of noise... to the point you cannot work. Replacement works fine, but after some time, the same thing.... The third time (today), I replaced with third party fans that cost around $8 apiece. I hope these do the trick.

Other Thoughts: I cannot go back to having my drives not removable...Did I mention convenient?

4 out of 5 eggsworks pretty well

Pros: fairly Inexpensive
hard drives are trayless
4 drives in 3 5.25" bays.
built-in cooling fans
one activity LED per drive

Cons: Sometimes takes a bit of fidgeting to get the drive to plug in properly and you have to be careful ejecting disks.
The power system/lamp system could have been designed better (It uses "y"'s from molex4-to-sata (and a mini3 connector. The mini3 is used to light the activity LED.) .
One of the activity lamps is dim (probably misaligned).
Fans are audibly noticeable, but to me, not annoying... This depends on the listener...

Other Thoughts: I'm using this for a 4-disk RAID5 and so far (knock on wood) I haven't had to remove any disks due to failure. I haven't had any disks drop mysteriously from the array yet. Only complaint is that they should have tapped off the activity LED internally and not require external hookup (including logical separation) so that you could hook up normal SATA power connectors straight to it and LEDs would still work.) Alas this was a cost saving measure...

Make sure you dust it. After several months of operation and there's dust everywhere. It sucks air inwards from the front it seems, and deposits dust on the front of the disks. Good sign that the fans are working.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for home servers

Pros: Easy install. Good capacity. Comes with all the cables.

Cons: 2 small fans. No way I could have this under my desk.

Other Thoughts: I have a couple of these and one of the 3 bay ones. I had to bend some metal to get it into one old case. The metal tabs that support 5.25 drives are sometimes too long for this enclosure to fit, so you have to bend them down flat or at least angle them down.

3 out of 5 eggsWiring

Pros: Nice not having drive trays.

Cons: two power cables came with the wrong connectors and Kingwin support will not respond to queries.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Drives fit securely, no excess vibration. Lights are clear without being annoyingly bright. Drives stay cool even with the fans off. Works with Promise FastTrack TX4310 with no issues.

Cons: The power cable thingy they use is really a big mess when you get the case wired up. They could have come up with a better solution for this.

Other Thoughts: Does not work well with cases that use rails for the 5.25 bays (specifically Antec cases) or cases that use 'tool less' drive bays. It looks good inside a Sonata II but you can only secure it with the top set of screw holes.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy Owner of 2 KF-4000, 1 KF-3000 - follow-up

Pros: Nothing to repeat here from my previous review.

Cons: There are two significant cons that comes with hands-on experience with these bays.
1) They use a special power cable adapters (one per drive bay), to connect a SATA power adapter to the bay, a MOLEX-female adapter to a MOLEX-male adapter from the power supply, and a tiny 4-cable connector for activity LEDs, visible in the user-facing front of the bay.
Once any of the 4 tiny cables comes out of the tiny white connector (they are like mini-power connectors for cooling fans in external hard drive bays), it seems impossible to repair it. They're very fragile.
*Each Kingwin hot-swap rack should come with 1 or 2 spare cables - I don't mind if it makes the price higher $5 or $10, I know it takes much longer to repair that thing.*
2) Using MOLEX connectors is wrong design. I had to buy Y-adapters, converting a SATA power adapter to 2 MOLEX-femal adapters. Adds a lot of cable mess in the PC case, and opportunities to leave something loose. *Kingwin should use SATA adapters exclusively*

Other Thoughts: Still very satisfied with my bays, but now more aware that despite the convenience of no hard-drive tray setup (just slide in a HD directly into the bay and you're done), it is a product targeted at low- to mid-consumer market, and as such, has inherent design flaws driven by keeping cost low.

If Kingwin fixes both cons I mentioned above, my rating of the product will jump from 80% (current) to 95% (and possibly higher, with getting more experience).

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good overall

Pros: One of the only products of its kind. Doesnt have any unnecessary circutry (which i like), its simply a drive holder with lights and a fan.

Cons: Unfortunatley the top fan has started to make an interesting noise. and the 2nd bay from the top's latch is a little flakey. But it is still well under warranty and ill send it back and get a new one

Other Thoughts: I'm building 2 10 TB file server, guess what I'm going to use to hold the HDDs

4 out of 5 eggsHappy Owner of 2 KF-4000, 1 KF-3000 - continued

Pros: * compatible with at least 3 different brands of 1TB drives (7200RPM, 32MB cache), 500GB drives (7200RPM, 16MB cache), and working fine with 250GB drives (5400RPM, 8MB cache)
* not restricting speed of connected drives - whether the rack connects the drives to a hardware RAID controller or to the motherboard, SATA II drives perform on the same highest level allowed by SATA II specification and drive design (of course, hardware RAID controller with 256MB of cache makes 8 drives *much* faster than a 8 single drives connected to the motherboard)

Cons: Mentioned them in my previous review. Nothing to add here.

Other Thoughts: Did not have room in my previous review to add the info above.... Love the simplicity and value of the product.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy owner of 2 KF-4000, 1 KF-3000

Pros: * completely tray-less insertion of SATA drives - just slide in the hard drive, close the door behind it, and that's it!
* used with 8-port hardware RAID-5 PCI-Express controller without any issues, as well as with single SATA II drives
* fits 4 3.5" SATA II drives into space of 3 x 5.25" devices, which means with an excellent mid-tower case like C**lmaster C*nturion 590 - which has max. 10 5.25" bays - you can fit 2 KF-4000 (8 SATA drives), 1 KF-3000 (3 SATA drives), and 1 DVD/Blue-Ray burner!
* 2 small fans to keep the drives cool
* price is unbeatable for the value and convenience
* no proprietary trays to purchase, no wasting time to mount the drives to the trays, no tools needed
* no restrictions on speed - the drives are as fast as if they were connected directly to the motherboard
* again, just slide in a SATA drive and lock the door - that's it!

Don't let the cons stop you from considering this product if you're on a tight budget! They're worth the price.

Cons: * connectors provided with the product - if you want to see HD activity lights working, you need to use provided cables that connect tiny white connectors to the rack, SATA power connectors to the rack for each SATA drive, and require the PC power supply to have MOLEX power connectors.
* connectors again - way too easy to cause the thin cables leading to the tiny white connectors for drive activity LEDs to get separated from the connector. (IMHO the product box *should* provide 1 additional spare connector, because fixing a broken one isn't easy, due to very small size of the pins and thinness of cables.)
You can avoid the problem by being very careful with the cables.
* cheap and small fans - after a month 1 of them started making annoyingly loud noise (that's 16% failure rate for the fans, considering number of KF enclosures I use). Fortunately none of my drives need cooling - they keep 30-35 degree Celsius even under heavy workload.
* seem designed for amateur consumer market

Other Thoughts: I've been waiting very long to discover availability of external multi-drive SATA cages usable with practically any PC case. Juggling 20+ drives (some of them moved on daily basis between machines in 2 different locations) has been a pain, which this type of cage resolved. Unfortunately, it introduced its own little quirks, which in the longer term you can get used to, especially considering the value=price, size factor (4 drives fitting in a space of 3 x 5.25" bays), and convenience of not having to keep a screwdriver handy at all times.
Discovering this family of products (KF-4000, KF-3000) has been an epiphany - why pay 2+ more money for other products, less convenient to use? I have a similar hot swap rack from another manufacturer (fits 5 SATA drives in space of 4 5.25" bays), but it requires each drive to be mounted to a rack (2-4 mounting points), easy to lose tiny accessories, and annoyingly loud cheap cooling fan, which I replaced with custom quiet fan - additional expense.

4 out of 5 eggsThese are great

Pros: Disclosure: I've got four of these. I just bought three more KF-3000's. I'm about to buy another KF-4000. And, I've got a few KF-1000's in various systems. I also have four of the competing products from iStar. I'm sticking with the Kingwin stuff.

The hot swap ability is fantastic. After dozens (hundreds?) of swaps, I've never had a loose connection nor a drive disappear. They keep the drives cool enough. The pretty blinky lights are cute, when they work.

I now have a 1GB hard drive that I use like a floppy. I no longer lug around a laptop. I just bring this drive back and forth to work and I have everything I need.

Cons: They're not perfect.

The lights don't always work. Who cares?

You may need to get "creative" with some Y power cables to get everything plugged up.

Other Thoughts: What else can I say? They work just fine. They're a standard part of my new workstation and server builds.

I will probably replace my iStar units with Kingwin's in the Fall.
