3 out of 5 eggsUnusually large

Pros: It works

Trayless

Cons: Too large for some enclosures. It took a lot of coaxing to get it into my 2U chenbros chassis' 5.25" slot... so much so that I highly doubt I will ever be able to remove it from that slot. Forget screwing it in, it doesn't need screws... just wedge it in and it will never come out. In my case, it sticks out about 1/8" from the front, and that's the best I can do. On the other hand, it appears to work, and accepts drives with no issues. In the event that the module breaks (one of the doors snaps or something similar), I will likely have to replace my entire chassis. I've read that others have had issues fitting this into their chassis, so I'm sure I'm not alone... I just may be one of the few stupid enough to attempt to "force the issue" and get it in the slot.

4 out of 5 eggsvery-good hot swap

Pros: This unit is very solidly constructed, and works great for of ease-of access and swapping out hard drives quickly. Each bay has its own activity light that is blue, but blinks purple to signify activity. Each individual tray is lockable, and it comes with two keys. finally, a great price on the unit!

Cons: I removed one egg because of an annoying issue that occurred for me. After installing my two SSDs into the bay, a witnessed a significant drop in system performance. Mainly loads times for games.

Other Thoughts: Despite the drops in loads time, i still highly recommend this bay. While my SSDs were removed to regain the system speed, it still works great as a 2,5 hdd bay. I am actually ordering a second unit for the hdd trays themselves.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Aspect of My New PC

Pros: - You use your computer case's space more efficiently
- You can truly take advantage of Hot Swap/AHCI without having to open your computer case.
- Supports 2.5" drives of varying heights (up to 15mm)
- Each of the four drive slots have it's own HDD activity LED.
- Each of the four drive slots can be "locked" to prevent accidentally removing a drive while in use.
- Zero performance loss on the SATA 3 bus.
- Cooling fans are included in the module
- Said fans can be removed!

Cons: Mounting this into your 5.25" bay securely may take a little bit of trial and error, which is the case with many backplane modules. If you tighten the screws too tightly you will impede the proper seating of the drives. Tighten too loosely and the entire module will slide around in the 5.25" bay. Patience is key. You will find a tension level that will eliminate both problems.

If you are using 3.5" HDDs, this module does not support them.

Other Thoughts: This device made my new build awesome. It does more than just hold four hdd/ssd. It gives flexibility to place your storage drives in a space that would usually go underutilized. In my instance, it allowed me to remove all of my hard drive cages, which allowed for much better air cooling. For some, it will mean the ability to mount a radiator. For others, it will mean the ability to mount additionally storage drives even after their existing drive cages are already fully populated.

At the moment I have an SSD and two 1TB HDDs populating the slots in the backplane, with and option to add another (and I will).

A small detail is that the blue LED indicators matched PERFECTLY with the Blue LEDs on my case, as well as the fan controller. I was very pleased with that.

I see myself purchasing a second unit in the future since by motherboard supports up to ten SATA devices.

5 out of 5 eggsSmart little device

Pros: Works without issue. The LED's are activity sensitive. The fan noise is not excessive. The door swings are sturdy. No flimsy pieces and rigid construction throughout.

Cons: None. Have had no problems to date.

Other Thoughts: Just a heads up that the drive release keys are the triangular socket type -- you may end up with another panel lock key on your keyring depending on what is most common with your equipment. Our test bed uses four Western Digital Red NAS drives ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236600 ) in a RAID 10 array. I would not have attempted a 2.5 inch setup like this without NAS specific drives -- typical laptop hard drives like to park themselves to save power and heat.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Holds 4 SSD drives. Works like a charm. Had no issues thus far.

Cons: wasn't free :p

Other Thoughts: I wanted to have outside access to adding/removing hard drives in my system and this worked as advertised. I removed the plastic ssd cage in my Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 case since it wasn't needed anymore.

I will be buying another one for my wife's system soon :)

3 out of 5 eggsDoes not quite fit

Pros: Easy to replace drives.

Cons: a little bit big to 5" bay

Other Thoughts: Have to use quite a force to put it in 5" bay. Very tight. Now I cannot even get it out.
If it would be 2mm smaller, it would fit fine.
Next time I will looks somewhere else.

5 out of 5 eggsAMS SATA BACKPLANE MODULE

Pros: Good construction and design. Looks like it will last me a lifetime (or as long as sata is used). Great for mounting ssd in older cases. I like the independent lock feature.

Cons: A bit pricey.

Other Thoughts: Comes with two fans installed in the back. I was able to unplug and remove the fans because I was using ssd and did not want the extra fan noise in my near silent PC.

5 out of 5 eggsstraight forward

Pros: I was looking for a way to access the drives from the front of a HAF X case and eliminate the drive bays and this worked well. Allows you to mount your 2.5" SSD drives in removable trays and put them in the front of your machine.

Cons: Look at your motherboard to see how many SATA ports you have because if you want to use all 4 bays you need to hook it up to 4 SATA ports on your motherboard. Looks like there are SATA controller boards that you can plug into your PCI-E slots but I haven't tried any yet.

Other Thoughts: I opened up the inside of my HAF X case by removing all the internal hard drive cages and moving all the drives to the 5.25" external bays. I like it.

I don't have enough drives or SATA ports on the motherboard so will have to investigate SATA controller cards sometime in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Was looking for a cheap reliable backplane for my freenas box. This one looks identical to the Thermaltake model which was $20 more... looks like price dropped to $62. Picked up two of these and they work great, connected to perc 5i controller running raid 50.

Cons: I ran into an issue with my mounting screws. I have an old HP tower (DC7800) and their mounting screws are a bit too long to a point where it interferes with the drives. Luckily they drive has a snug fit as is, had to abandon the HP rail system and secure it with a single short screw for each unit. Also the LED jumper switch doesnt do anything. It supposed to change from solid to blinking with activity. Both settings keep the LEDs solid, I really don't care either way but I figured I list it.
