Pros: These processors enable a 16 core workstation at unbelievable prices. For any parallel, math intensive operations I don't think you can beat it.

Cons: The selection of motherboards and heatsink/fans is pretty pathetic, but I got what I needed and MrBayes is screaming along now.

Pros: It is unbelievably cheap for building a 16 core workstation. Nothing any OEM has even comes close. For any application that is pure math based (is straight up calculation and doesn't use extensions) there is nothing on earth that gives you more performance per price

The other great thing is the amount of memory slots this thing can work with. I bought the cheap 2GB sticks and was able to stuff the workstation with 32GB. The upgrade from 12GB to 24GB cost more from the OEM's than this entire system because they have to go to fully buffered. Magny-cours gives you tens of GB's even if you use UDIMM.

Cons: Lack of heat sinks. These don't come with heat sinks, AM3 sinks aren't compatible and the G34 sinks are all based on blades. So I have an otherwise amazing workstation with little CPU sinks because I don't have any other choice.

Other Thoughts: Pros/Cons verse alternatives in its price range:

Gulftown would be better for anything nonparallel, but otherwise this gives you way better performance

Nehalehem Xeons would be better if you use x86 extensions, but since they offer half the physical cores and the same number of virtual cores, magny-cours beats it in anything pure calculation based.

Istanbul offers higher clock speed, but at a higher cost, fewer cores, and the same thermals. If you can scale to 12, going to 16 isn't hard and the performance is better per watt.
