The 45nm processor spec goes mobile with the Core 2 Duo P8400. You get top end notebook performance while drawing only 25W. Lower power means lower heat and longer battery life without taking a performance hit. Intel was also able to pack more features into the chip. This is boosted by the Intelligent Power Capability which manages CPU power loads to further increase battery life.

L2 cache has been bumped to 3MB and the Front Side Bus has been pushed to 1066MHz. They also boosted memory access and execution speed with the Wide Dynamic Execution and Smart Memory Access. These combine to let the processor compute more instructions with more data per clock cycle. You'd better watch out those in game enemies will be shooting back faster now.

The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature has been enhanced with the addition of the SSE4 instruction set and Intel HD Boost. This will give your entertainment experience a boost with better audio and video processing. It will also help with speech recognition, engineering and scientific applications. Perhaps most important of all will be the boost to security with increased encryption power and speed.

  • newegg Specialized Dual-core Microarchitecture The Intel Core 2 Duo processor includes two execution cores in a single physical package to enable execution of parallel threads or applications on separate cores with dedicated CPU resources. The results enable outstanding dual-core performance and greater system response when running multi-threaded or multiple demanding applications simultaneously. The innovative 45nm dual-core technology optimizes thermal performance for reduced power consumption and noise.
  • newegg Intel Centrino 2 Duo Mobile Technology Intel Centrino 2 Duo mobile technology has just gotten a mobility upgrade with the new Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor. Its advanced capabilities provide twice the multitasking performance with improved energy efficiency for enhanced battery life so you get the benefits of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility.
  • newegg Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel 32-bit architecture by enabling the mobile processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended virtual and physical memory.
  • newegg Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) EIST allows the system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease average power consumption and average heat production. Combined with existing power saving features, EIST may provide an excellent balance between providing power when you need it and conserving power when you don’t.
  • newegg Execute Disable Bit (EDB) Intel's Execute Disable Bit function can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system. Execute Disable Bit allows the processor to classify areas in memory where application code can execute and where it cannot. When a malicious worm attempts to insert code in the buffer, the processor disables code execution, preventing damage or worm propagation.
  • newegg Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) With Intel VT, one hardware platform functions as multiple "virtual" platforms. For business, Intel VT offers improved manageability, limiting downtime and maintaining worker productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions. In the home, Intel VT allows creating unique user environments for multiple family members using the same platform simultaneously.

3 out of 5 eggsNot good to COD:Black Ops

Pros: It's great for everything up to COD:MW2 for gaming, but anything after that the processor can't keep up. Works great for every day word processing and some games.

Cons: Doesn't run COD:Black Ops :(

Other Thoughts: Just letting you know in case you were buying this to play games with.

5 out of 5 eggsI like it

Pros: Just got a used Lenovo Thinkpad T500 and bought one of these and 2GB of RAM to speed it up a bit. This gets it done for everything from HD movies to music to a little encoding and Photoshop all while only being a 25W chip. Runs excellently when plugged in and when on battery and downclocked I still hardly notice any lag even when multitasking. Runs cool and keeps the battery draw down while adding some extra oomph. Plays light games pretty well with my integrated X4500HD. I imagine it could push a fairly powerful video card. Scores 22 seconds in Super 1M and a 5.7 on the Windows 7 experience Index. This thing is a fully performing Core 2 on a 25W draw. Wow. With 2GB of RAM and some light tweaking it runs Windows 7 x86(32-bit) Professional like a champ. Never a slow down or a hitch.

Cons: Absolutely none. Slapped it in, new TIM, and she's run cool and quiet since day one. Barely affected battery life vs my 1.83GHz Dual Core

5 out of 5 eggsIf you go...Go fast

Pros: Purchased this particular CPU, mainly with the help from the other review that I read on Newegg (Thanks Guy). Have never purchased an item that did not have a review. The cpu was in the correct speed range that I needed, price vs speed. Installed easy enough, have never built a notebook before. Works fine, has the speed that I need. The person I built the notebook for loves it. It is all good..

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: This Socket-P cpu installed in a MSI MS 1722 id1. It was a barebones notebook that I bought new. Actually, I bought yet another MSI MS-1722 and I just purchased another Intel Core 2 duo P8400 from Newegg. So, you might be reading another exciting review from me. I am sure you are as excited as I am over that prospect. This is a very nice CPU, not the fastest-but not slow either. Very functional, especially the person I built the first notebook for is coming from a single core. It is the difference between night and day.

5 out of 5 eggsFills a niche - I like it.

Pros: This processor, in my opinion, fills a nice little niche. For those who want some speed but don't want to sacrifice too much battery life to get it, the P8400 works out very well. Look up this processor on Futuremark, you will see it performs quite well. I didn't buy from the Egg, because I got an OEM chip for much cheaper (think $185) and for the price it was an absolute steal.

In my system (specs below), this thing runs at 38c idle and around 50c under heavy load with it on my lap (i.e. poor cooling). That's with the stock thermal paste that was on the heatsink (ran out of AS-5). Put some AS-5 on it and use a laptop cooler and I am sure it would be even better. Could probably get it down to 45c under load.

With only a 25W TDP = better battery life with some CPU headroom. Thing scores only 500 points less in Futuremark CPU benchmarks compared to the desktop E8400 at 3.0Ghz. Not too shabby.

Cons: The only cons I have are that this processor fills a niche. You can find similarily fast processors for less, but then will sacrifice battery life. If you are like me and want decent battery life, but also enough power to play DX10 games, then get this.

Other Thoughts: Specs of my laptop basing this on: MSI MS-1651 whitebook, Intel P8400 2.26Ghz, 4GB (2x2GB) OCZ ram at 800Mhz, Geforce 9600M GT 512 DDR3, 160GB 7200rpm Fujitsu HDD, Intel 5100 wifi.

Thing runs like a champion. I've tested with games like Bioshock (early DX10 games) and I can play maxed out at 1200 x 800 in DX10. Probably couldn't handle newer or more demanding DX10 games without watering down the settings, but for my mobile base of operations, everything is peachy.
