Overview

AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

Pros: can handle anything I've thrown at it, seems to run cool (see cons), low power, great APU for the overkill HTPC

Cons: biggest con of it is the heatsink and fan.
while this isn't a fault of AMD, the aftermarket is sparse for good, small, quiet coolers that can fit into a cramped HTPC case without issue. (see other thoughts)

temp sensors read wrong as well, temps will sometimes differ from what software your using or even in the BIOS. I've seen this issue on all the APUs I've used so far.
not much to go on but, it feels like it runs cool when I touch the heat sink.

Other Thoughts: I replaced the stock cooler for the stock copper cooler that came with my old Phenom II 965, turns out the mounting points are the same for AM3 and FM2+ so it worked out pretty well.

4 out of 5 eggsAMD A10-7700K Kaveri 10 Compute Cores (4 CPU + 6 GPU) 3.4GHz Socket FM2+ 95W AD770KXBJABOX Desktop Processor AMD Radeon R7 series

Pros: Very nice CPU, Does what i need it too.

Cons: Over heats when i am trying to play my game. Runs high 80's Celsius with stock fan. Had to order a new CPU cooler. Had to turn down all my graphics in order to play or my CPU will over heat and crash the PC. Hopeing when i get my new Cooler i will be able to turn up the graphics and be able to use my New R9 290x the way i should be.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat CPU and GPU

Pros: Fast and cheap, and the APU aspect really flys when you add in a discrete GPU. Little known fact about the APU is that you can Crossfire it to a R7 Card of type. Doesn't bog down easily, and for a Quad core at the price it is quite astounding. It also runs cool, even a cheap heatsink like a CoolerMaster T2. No more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit under full load.

Cons: The heatsink included, to be 100% honest, is terrable. I would, without doubt, to buy an aftermarket heatsink.

3 out of 5 eggsHappy but not...

Pros: The processor is an awesome bang for your buck. Quick, responsive, happy with purchase!

Cons: The stock heat sink is GARBAGE. It doesn't keep it near cool enough to even be comfortable with using the processor. You have to use a 3rd party heat sink if you plan on purchasing this processor. Running at 58c-63c with stock cooler. You MUST get a different heat sink! The stock heat sink doesn't even cover the entire processor!

Other Thoughts: Very happy with purchase, took off two eggs considering the processor doesn't even come with a heat sink that will even keep it cool enough to use out of the box!

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: great apu for the price, a friend with a 8350 and a gtx 970 does 200fps, while I do 150.

Cons: I've heard about heat issues but so far mine is running good and cool.

Other Thoughts: Great for the price, would recommend.

4 out of 5 eggsAMD Driver Difficulties

Pros: Fast, runs cool with closed loop cooling system. No need for graphics card since I don't play graphics-intensive games. The new build with this APU booted up on the first attempt.

Cons: Spent several days attempting to install the AMD graphics driver. Finally gave up and allowed the Microsoft basic driver to run the graphics part of the APU.

But after moving the new computer upstairs to my wife's office and connecting it to her monitor, I attempted to install the AMD graphics driver again. Lo and behold, it installed. The only reason I can think of for the successful installation of the AMD driver on this last attempt is the DVI cable that was used to connect the monitor in my wife's office is a single link cable. The cable I had used to connect the computer to a monitor during the build was a dual link cable. Why this would make a difference as to whether the graphics driver would install or not, I have no idea. But maybe someone out there can use this information to avoid some frustration in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsAlways AMD

Pros: Inexpensive , powerful , low power consumption

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: I've been using AMD products since the socket 370 and A days and they just keep getting better. Just drop it in tweak BIOS and go , no worries.
