AMD A-Series APU

Get More of What You Want with an AMD A-Series APU

We changed the game for PCs by revolutionizing the APU which combines the power of a multicore CPU with AMD Radeon™ graphics all in one energy-efficient chip.
  • Unlock your system's full potential with HSA-enabled APUs
  • Experience a new level of immersion with AMD TrueAudio technology¹
  • Blaze through apps with AMD Turbo Core technology²
  • Use AMD Mantle technology³ to raise your game to unprecedented levels with hyper-efficient performance
  • Get extreme performance with Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, featuring supercharged AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics.4

So What is HSA, Exactly?

Your APU with HSA = A Team of Specialists

AMD A-Series APU

You can think of HSA as a team with different players lending their unique talents to form one powerful unit. The CPU leads the system through everyday tasks. The GPU can zoom its way through tasks that are particularly data-intensive. Other components work together with the CPU and GPU in various, specialized processing tasks. With each member of the team performing a task that is especially suited to it, the efficiencies are designed to give you an enormous boost in performance.

AMD True-Audio Technology – What's the Difference?

Your Games Now Sound as Good as They Look¹

The expectations of gamers have never been higher. Graphics quality and processing speed have advanced rapidly, and the games of today are light years ahead of those from just a few years ago. But advancements in game audio have been more sporadic and less widely adopted. Sound is a critically important part of the immersive experience for gamers and sound engineers are eager to advance their art, but they haven't enjoyed the same kind of attention that continually drives graphics improvements. That is, until now.

AMD's Revolutionary Mantle

AMD's Mantle is a groundbreaking graphics API that promises to transform the world of game development to help bring better, faster games to the PC. Read on to discover how AMD is working with the game development community to revolutionize the PC gaming experience.

What Mantle Does

AMD A-Series APUMantle is the Harmony of Three Essential Ingredients:
  1. A driver within the AMD Catalyst™ software suite that lets applications speak directly to the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  2. A GPU or APU enabled with the Graphics Core Next architecture;
  3. An application or game written to take advantage of Mantle.

Mantle reduces the CPU's workload by giving developers a way to talk to the GPU directly with much less translation. With less work for the CPU to do, programmers can squeeze much more performance from a system, delivering the greatest benefits in gaming systems where the CPU can be the bottleneck.

What it Means for Gamers

Now that Mantle has freed up some extra CPU capacity, we expect Mantle will lead to better games, and more of them, since Mantle makes game development easier. That's not all Mantle will do for gamers. By shifting work to the GPU, a mid-range or older CPU isn't the same handicap it was before. With Mantle, the GPU becomes the critical part of the system, and GPU upgrades will have a bigger impact than before.

4 out of 5 eggsAMD Driver Difficulties

Pros: Fast, runs cool with closed loop cooling system. No need for graphics card since I don't play graphics-intensive games. The new build with this APU booted up on the first attempt.

Cons: Spent several days attempting to install the AMD graphics driver. Finally gave up and allowed the Microsoft basic driver to run the graphics part of the APU.

But after moving the new computer upstairs to my wife's office and connecting it to her monitor, I attempted to install the AMD graphics driver again. Lo and behold, it installed. The only reason I can think of for the successful installation of the AMD driver on this last attempt is the DVI cable that was used to connect the monitor in my wife's office is a single link cable. The cable I had used to connect the computer to a monitor during the build was a dual link cable. Why this would make a difference as to whether the graphics driver would install or not, I have no idea. But maybe someone out there can use this information to avoid some frustration in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsAlways AMD

Pros: Inexpensive , powerful , low power consumption

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: I've been using AMD products since the socket 370 and A days and they just keep getting better. Just drop it in tweak BIOS and go , no worries.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome apu

Pros: I love this APU. I won't waste your time on a long review but if low price, great performance, and fast access to opening and run applications appeal to you then do yourself a favor and put your mind at ease. This is A great APU and it delivers more than most CPUs. Absolutely love this product. I Was a Intel guy but with this APU, I will be making the switch and becoming a proud AMD owner.

Cons: Wish I could crossfire this with a r7 discrete card

5 out of 5 eggsawesome

Pros: great for a gaming build, add a cheap amd graphics card to it and you have a very affordable computer to play all the new games.

Cons: can't crossfire with higher end gpu's, not really a con just don't see why the built in gpu couldn't be used for phys x.

Other Thoughts: considering the cpu side is the same as the 7850k, the gpu side is the only difference I've seen between the two.

note: the cpu on the 860k and the a8 7600 are essentially the same as well, just something to consider if you are going to use higher end graphics cards.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat APU

Pros: This APU is a beast. It was super easy to over clock it to 4.1GHZ didn't even need to up the voltage. The only problem that I'm having is overclocking the NB of the chip so I can get my ram up to 2400 but getting just ten percent more muchness out of it, I just gave up because to me it isn't worth it. I have tried paying a few games on it, one being skyrim, it was on low settings before I got decent frame rates. But I plan on buying a R9 video card and seeing if I can get the two to work together.

Cons: just the NB clocking

2 out of 5 eggsWhy go through the trouble?

Pros: Great Processor

Cons: Not great bang for the buck.

Other Thoughts: You pay 160 for the processor and then add another 40-75 for a decent cooler. For less than 200 you can buy a AMD A8-5600K Trinity Quad-Core 3.6GHz & a dedicated MSI R7 250 2GD3 OC Radeon R7 250 2GB Graphics card. The price to performance isn;t what AMD promises us. I have been an AMD Fan Boy since 1999 and I have to say the price to performance and performance to dollar goes to Intel. AMD needs to drop the price to get me back at this point.

3 out of 5 eggsOK for a CPU

Pros: Overclocked to 4.5Ghz @ 1.45v, no issues at all. CPU performs great, couldn't ask for more...GPU is another story.

Cons: Don't expect to play newer games with this, even BF4 that came bundled with it is choppy and has screen tears on high settings with 2133 memory. The CPU will also underclock itself when you're using the GPU no matter what settings you select in bios (stock or overclocked). Tried on two different motherboards (ASRock/ASUS). I do not like the idea of an unlocked CPU setting it's own clock speeds. I bought an unlocked chip for a freakin' reason!! Finally ended up disabling the GPU and getting a card, no issues since.

Other Thoughts: I have a solid motherboard, PSU, and watercooling setup; if I want to load up the CPU with something and play a game, I shouldn't have my CPU throttling down because i'm using too much power or whatever.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome chip, My daily/Work Machine

Pros: Have had this since basically 2 weeks from release day!
Its a great chip. OC'd to 4Ghz on all 4 cores! Temps are great w/ CM TX3.
Blows through all tasks! My machine boots in 3 sec with a 60GB Kingston SSD.
Love the flat IPC, way better gaming performance than Piledriver setups. Quite a move for AMD.
Beat my 6800k @ 4.6 in some benchmarks (this chip running at 4Ghz). Better gaming performance too.

Cons: Doesn't OC aswell as Piledriver (but it has better IPC anyway). FGLRX for Linux (Linux Catalyst) isn't good unless you have an out-of-box linux setup. Any sort of a semi-custom setup and it probably won't work for you.

Other Thoughts: I use a dGPU with this on linux. This is my daily CPU. My work computer is the machine i use all day every day.
Mostly its used for office applications, development applications (sublime, Chromium, Chrome, Firefox w/ Dev tools, Libreoffice).
