Good for virtualization environment
- Pros: I have two of these CPU's on a Lenovo D10 running W2k8 x64 R2 16 MB FBDIMM with 4 low load VM's under hyper-v. Two VM's are W2k8 servers and 2 VM's are PC's. The CPU's handle it well.
The fan noise is low. Installation is easy. There are two components: the CPU chip itself and the active/pasive heatsink combo...just follow 10-12 diagrams on the installation booklet and you're done. The heat sink comes with 3 stripes of pre-applied thermal material.
- Cons: None.
Best PRICE/PERFORMANCE Processor
- Pros: - Fast processors out of the box
- OC'd to 3.2ghz easily in BIOS without having to up power at all. - Works GREAT with Skulltrail (D5400XS) Motherboard - I bought two: 8 cores = awesome for After Effects / Premiere Pro video editing!
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: I might buy the L5420's now that they are out (lower power consumption @ 50W instead of 80W, but same speed as these E5420's)
lovely processor
- Pros: Wicked fast relatively economical quad-core processor. My board has two sockets but I haven't seen a need for a second, no matter what I throw at this one.
- Cons: Not a native quad-core, though not really an issue. No QPI yet.
- Other Thoughts: Paired this proc with a Tyan S5396 and 8GB of Kingston DDR2-667. Running several virtual machines w/ various apps under a *nix host is absolutely no problem for it.
I also noticed a significant lack of third-party cooling solutions, but I found a quiet one by thermalright that works great.
