Great value
- Pros: Fast read, acceptable write, good power consumption and dirt low temps. Great value. Basically, you get Velociraptor speed with lower temps and a small increase in price with no moving parts. Great value. If you have more money, but the better ones, but otherwise, this is a great alternative.
- Cons: Not as fast as more expenside models. Only 128GB
- Other Thoughts: I'm writing this review to correct two other misconceptions about this drive. First, the the user who reported a dead USB enclosure because the computers wouldn't read the SSD in the enclosure, your OLD mechanical drive goes in the enclosure, not the SSD. Then you boot your laptop from the enclosed CD (with the SSD in your laptop). Maybe it was defective but it probably not; this is a common user error with this kit.
Second, although it does use the JMircon controllers, others are wrong that it had the same stuttering problem. Kingston, Toshiba, and JMircron completely re-did the controller and, although it is not as fast as the higher end controllers, the stuttering problem is no more.
Fast and cheap
- Pros: Affordable, easy to install, included external enclosure, cloning software included, faster boot time and shutdown. Some benefit of increased battery life.
- Cons: none
- Other Thoughts: I bought two of these one for my netbook (Asus 1000h) and the other for a tablet pc (HP tx2500z). Installation went without a hitch. I didn't use the included cloning software and instead used Acronis. Booting and shutdown is faster. I have Win7 on the netbook and Vista Ultimate 64 on the tablet. Now I don't have to worry closing the laptops and and placing it on it's sides right away since there's no platters to ruin. The biggest advantage is that it can take more bumps compared to HDD's and programs starts faster. And another surprised benefit is that when I tried to activate readyboost it said it wasn't necessary. I agree about Dell. It does have a special partition for it's Media software. I'm planning to install one for my XPS m1530.

It was fast but not furious!
- Pros: Twice as fast as my Lenovo T500's 7200rpm OEM disk, according to CrystalDiskMark.
Cloning the OEM disk was extremely easy.
- Cons: Was probably the cause of many blue screens, hangs, program crashes (that never used to happen in the previous nine months of using this T500.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this on Nov 27, installed it in my Lenovo T500 on Jan 7, and swapped the OEM drive back in on Feb 5!
It may have been coincidental, but during the one month using the SSD, I got more blue screens, system hangs, and program crashes than probably in my entire career (almost 30 years!)!!!
Yesterday the T500 wouldn't reboot, Windows complaining half way through the boot process that it "cannot evrify the digital signature" of ntkrn1pa.exe. Lenovo's "Restore & Rescue" was AWOL as well, hanging when I tried to go into "Advanced Restore & Rescue". Reseating the SSD didn't help.
I swapped the OEM drive back in, put the SSD into the Kingston USB enclosure. When I plugged it into laptop, I got a pop-up error dialog: "You need to format the disk in drive G before you can use it. Do you want to format it? Format disk/Cancel" !!!! When I tried to access the drive via Windows Explorer, I got: "G:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." Howeve
Great kit
- Pros: The benefits of SSD are obvious so all of that applies ot the pros. The REAL pro to this in my eyes is the ease of use that the kit provides. Nice little external enclosure, the bundled software is very well done and the cd is bootable. I've used this kit for the SSD as well as other conventional HD swaps on laptops and I love it! Soooo easy to clone drives/migrate data.
- Cons: I'm 100% satisfied, no cons.
Warranty
- Pros: Looks fast. I'm sure it is. Haven't bought one yet. Only reason I only gave it 3 eggs was because of the writeup. Still gonna buy one.
- Cons: The Newegg product page says that this drive comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Kingston says 3 years.
