A small outline dual inline memory module (SODIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). SODIMMs get their name because they are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a SODIMM are not connected.

200-pin SODIMMs are used to provide DDR and DDR2 SDRAM memory for notebook computers. 200-pin SODIMMs are available in PC2700 DDR SDRAM, PC3200 DDR SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM and DDR2 PC2-3200 SDRAM. To use DDR or DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 200-pin SODIMM slots and a DDR- or DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR or DDR2 SODIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM SODIMM socket. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.)

4 out of 5 eggsInspect the contacts (mine had a dirty spot)

Pros: Worked like I hoped & expected. Not a bad deal, considering the performance benefit.

Cons: Dirty contacts. In dozens of memory upgrades, I've never seen this before. I don't know if it would have caused memory errors, but I didn't want to risk it. Deducting one star for that.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these. When removing from the package, I noticed a dirty spot on the contacts on the back side of one DIMM. I was able to wipe off the dirt with a few passes of a cloth dipped in 91% isopropyl alcohol.

After that, I ran memtest86 overnight. All tests passed.

BTW, the max rated speed in my laptop is DDR333. However, the benefit of using DDR400 is that my laptop run it at CAS 2.5 instead of the rated CAS 3.

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 on a 90 nm Pentium M (Dothan). Won't run on the earlier generation, due to lack of PAE.

I also installed a Transcend PATA/EIDE SSD. Lots of RAM is key if you're running Linux on a laptop with a SSD. To minimize writes, I have /tmp/, /var/tmp/, /var/log/, and /var/spool/ mounted on tmpfs (essentially a variable-sized RAMDISK). This puts even greater demands on memory capacity. With only 1 GB, I was swapping before I'd hardly run anything.

5 out of 5 eggsOld RAM is Expensive

Pros: Crucial makes high quality RAM. They make their own chips (MIcron) so you don't end up with no-name generic chips that might not last or might have errors from day one.

Cons: Pricey for what it is, but good for upgrading that older laptop that client just refuses to replace because "it works fine"...

5 out of 5 eggsvery nice upgrade

Pros: wow this put my computer from unability to play 480p videos without freezing up to 720p with no issues. boots up faster allows all my programs to be played at the same time and still screaming fast.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: why is this more money than other ram? it has less voltage and my laptop cannot support 2.6V ram. so i pay the price oh well. i bought 2 of these.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat it's made for

Pros: Does what it's made for! Helps run apps faster when your ram configuration is insufficient! Great little upgrade for older laptops that still fits your needs.

Cons: None!

5 out of 5 eggsMade me faster

Pros: Replacement for 256Mb modules in a Compaq-Presario laptop/WinXpPro. Was just sluggish trying to hop on the Internet. Even after cleaning and tuning. More memory did the trick. Much more responsive now. Used Crucial memory for many machines. Find highly reliable.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Wish laptop mfg's would put in four slots instead of two. I hate pulling out old memory to just have it lying around unused.

3 out of 5 eggsCrucial Ram for Gateway Laptop

Pros: Windows booted up on my bro's 5 year old Gateway 4026gz laptop after the new module was installed, after a long series of what seemed to be a beep code followed by the windows loading bar. (same bar you see when you do an install of Win XP and it is loading the files)

Cons: While logged in(after trying the password 5 times cuz it wouldnt except it), windows was immediatly showing abnormal funtionality(to long for me to list). I call crucials tech support line and explain the problem to them in detail. After going through a basic check list to see if I had tried all of them to fix this (which I did) he told me to run a program to see if there were any erros with the ram. No Really? Like I wasn't going to do that next. The only reason I called was to ask if for any reason this ram wouldn't be compatible with the system, before I waisted any more of my time running a memtest, but he assured me that it was 100percent compatible just like the website said. Ok so I run the memtest and what a suprise it doesn't come up with any errors. Ok so why isn't it working? If I didn't know any better I would have blaimed it on bad memory from the start, but since it checked out, that only leads me to one other explination, THE MEMORY ISN'T COMPATIBLE!

Other Thoughts: This is in no way shape or form Neweggs fault. I just feel bad for the average joe who doesn't have much technical knowlege about these kinds of issues that is being misleaded by companies that use words like garenteed compatibility as thier strongest selling point. After all, isn't that why brands like Crucial cost more then some of the others? To give the customer peace of mind that their product will work? After doing some extra research on my own, I found out that the PC2700 is the only one that will work in his laptop, No thx to the crucial website that suggested the PC3200 in the first place, or the customer support tech that told me he sold 190 of the same exact modules, and only had 1 comeback with a problem. If I had listened to them I'd still be trying to figure out what was wrong right now. Crucial Really needs to Update their website with correct information. I will be returning this to newegg for the PC2700 version and everything should work fine.
