5 out of 5 eggsGreat meemory chips

Pros: Fantastic compatibility. I have yet to find a DDR2 laptop these will not work in. For the dollars, the compatibility and memory size, adds quite a bit of "zing" for most laptop upgrades.

Cons: These could be a bit faster, but then would the compatibility be there?

Other Thoughts: We tend toward these memory modules when free shipping is offered because they just work.
There are cheaper modules but the few dollars you might save are not worth the headaches of incompatibility or random blue screens.

5 out of 5 eggsMushkinizing a Dell XPS 1210

Pros: Upgrading RAM allows old laptop better performance

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: The year-2006 Dell XPS M1210 originally sold for $1000-$2000. It was a very good computer, limited by its 5-pound weight and a processor that is slow by 2013 standards.

The RAM is easily installed, but only one RAM stick goes into the usual bay. If you were beginning with two RAM sticks, say, each 1 GB, you'd really need only upgrade this "easy access" stick anyway. You'd end up with a total of 3 GB of RAM, which is the most cost-efficient amount for a 32-byte Windows system.

I knew that, but I wanted 4 GB anyway. A 32-bit system would use only about 3.25 GB, and so the second stick is mostly wasted, but I wanted as much RAM as I could get. There are ways to increase the 3.25 usage, but I was okay with just the usual max access of 3.25.

So I had to put in the second stick. You have to pry up the hinge plate and unscrew the motherboard to do that. Sounds a whole lot worse than the 5 minutes it takes. (The pry is easy and the unscrewing involves only 3 screws.)

BUT—as someone had fortunately pointed out—when you first start up your computer afterward, it will display a black screen with 3 short sentences. The wording is ambiguous but YOU ARE FINE. You have to DO NOTHING and JUST WAIT FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES. This is extremely important.

The messages intend to tell you that something has happened to your computer's RAM—of course it has; you upgraded it. And, if you have NOT just finished upgrading it—but you HAVE—then you should reseat your RAM. But none of that applies to you.

Trouble is, the screen just stays like that. And, feeling some anx from having just done the RAM replacement, you might get scared and panic. NO, NO! DO NOTHING. You have already SUCCEEDED. But you now have to wait a couple of minutes with that black screen just sitting there.

At this point, your laptop is actually adjusting itself to the new RAM. This is a one-time-only wait. It won't happen on subsequent boot-ups.

All of a sudden it's finished; it's okay; and up comes Windows.

Is the job worth doing? You bet. As I said, the sweet-spot for cost is to use 3 GB RAM in your XPS M1210.

Although Windows shows you what you have, you can download either Speccy or else CPU-Z (both totally free at Filehippo and other places) and get more info about your system and your RAM.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: received in 2 days

Cons: didn't work in my Toshiba P205d Vista 32bit O/S l/t. Unstable, only recognized 3.6G instead of 4G. Single Dimm registered 1.87G instead of 2G. locked up with both installed after about 5 min. differant combo of original 1G Dimm and 2G Dimm only registered 2.87G. This combo worked for a few min, blue screen and l/t shut off before able to read. Next boot worked for few min again, then blue screen which said memory problem and shut off the computer. Single 2G worked ok for awhile, got tired and r&r Dimm with original 2x1G Dimm. I'm not sure if defective or timing problems. Hope next units work.

4 out of 5 eggsmy pair seems good

Pros: They fit rather snugly; were not DOA.

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: Got them to boost the performance in my 2008 white macbook. I'm up from the factory 1gb of ram and the boost is really noticeable in a little bit of stress testing (multiple open office files and running a stream). Kinda thinking about using another open source office suite for macs to see if there is any kind of difference.

I hope the current QC has eliminated the problems described in the low reviews from 2006-2011.
