Weighing in at less than a third of the weight of the disk-based notebook hard drives, the new standard in low power, shock tolerant drives is here! Samsung's 2.5" 32GB SSD is a Nand Flash-based Solid State Drive ideal for people whose notebooks work as hard as they do. Fitting neatly into the spot where your regular hard drive would go, but it's much, much faster and much, much tougher. This brilliant development in drive technology brings up to 53MB/s reading speed and up to 28MB/s writing speed?
With 1500G shock tolerance, 20G vibration tolerance and a temperature range from -13 to 185° F, this drive can go just about anywhere. A stingy 0.5W active and 0.1W idle power consumption is environmentally-friendly and will keep your notebook system going on those long flights, and in complete silence, too – no moving parts spoil your peace. Flash memory technology dramatically increases data transfer speeds are and reduces latency below 1ms. Built in EDC and ECC supports redundancies and reliability not normally seen at such sizes.
This is a stunning breakthrough in solid-state NAND technology, and a great component for any portable with a need for speed and a thirst for power.

- Pros: Fast, solid state. I have a durabook laptop and now I can really throw it around without worry. Boot times with linux shortened. Can put all partitions on the same pass for checking in your fstab
- Cons: The IDE connector on my laptop did NOT fit this drive. The pins are correct, but the plastic housing this drive is in has a smaller tolerance around the pins than a normal 2.5" drive
- Other Thoughts: I am quite satisfied with this drive. I solved the IDE connector not fitting with a pair of pliers :P
Fits fine in a Dell Latitude
- Pros: Fast. Silent. Lightweight. Haven't yet confirmed the lower power draw. My Latitude C400 now feels much faster than a new AMD Turion Presario. The only sound the laptop makes is a slight buzz from the screen. A great way to revivify old IDE/ATA laptops.
- Cons: Expensive. So quiet that you can hear your screen buzz.
- Other Thoughts: I had none of the troubles other reviewers noted with the form factor or pin layouts; it's fine for older Dells, anyway.

Excellent upgrade
- Pros: Easy to install. *FAST*. Durable. Lower power usage. Will make magnetic platters in laptops obsolete.
- Cons: PATA.
- Other Thoughts: Sure it's expensive, but this drive will take an older laptop and breathe new life into it. My old Toshiba portege boots 30 seconds faster than my striped-SATA Alienware, faster than my Raptor drives in my desktop, and launches applications faster! And, eventually, I'll move this drive into another machine, so I'll get long life out of it.
Good 1st gen SSD
- Pros: Solid state! No noise, very little heat, tough! VERY zippy when doing random access (i.e. mucking about in your OS). Near-instantaneous format (with WinXP - NTFS).
- Cons: The hard plastic shell is way out of spec. There's not enough room for a standard 44pin IDE connector (I had to hack saw a small chunk off so that it would fit). The HOLES in the case aren't even threaded (very difficult to secure it to anything). For some reason Knopp seemed to 'freeze' while trying to format the drive, and ubuntu took forever and a day to format it (both flavors using ext3).
It's not SATA :(
- Other Thoughts: Installed this drive in a custom built system using Commell's LV-677 mini ITX motherboard in a Atech fabrication silent case. The BIOS recognizes the drive as a standard HD (good). The motherboard only allows operation at ATA33 but it is still screaming fast (in windows). I use this machine as a HD media computer.
Excellent upgrade
- Pros: No configuration was required. Excellent performance -- well worth the price premium over other SSDs in this form factor.
- Cons: As noted by others, casing is ~0.5mm too large and holes are not threaded -- in my laptop I was able to squeeze in place and the fit is tight enough to not bother screwing it in.
- Other Thoughts: Very good upgrade to squeeze another few years out of a 2-3 year old laptop -- as prices drop will become more and more useful in this role.

Flash SSD The Flash SSD (NAND Flash-based Solid State Drive) from Samsung Electronics fully consists of semiconductor devices and uses NAND Flash Memory to provide solid reliability. Without moving parts such as a platter (Disk) and head, Flash SSD provides a remarkable small form factor storage solution for sub-notebook PCs and Tablet PCs with high performance, reduced power consumption.,and increased MTBF (mean time between failure).
