Whether you're a technology enthusiast or a hardcore gamer, the Samsung 470 Series Solid-State Drive can help you get more done on your PC in less time. The 470 Series allows you to boot up your computer in as little as 15 seconds and launch games and apps faster, and it uses two-thirds less power than typical hard disk drives. In addition, because the device has no moving parts--unlike traditional hard drives--it provides exceptional reliability, protecting your data from impact or mechanical failure. A brushed metal shell resists shock, and it also blocks dust and corrosion. And thanks to the included Norton Ghost software, you can transfer files to your new SSD without frustration. The Samsung 470 Series is available with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

  • newegg Faster Performance, Improved Multitasking With sequential read speeds of up to 250 MB/s and write speeds of up to 220 MB/s, the Samsung 470 Series Solid-State Drive allows you to spend more time doing and less time waiting. The drive also features TRIM support to ensure that write speeds won't decrease over time (note: please ensure that your computer's operating system also has TRIM support). The 470 Series also delivers improved multitasking, so that you can easily edit photos, for instance, while downloading a movie.
  • newegg Includes Norton Ghost Software The Samsung 470 comes with a full version of Norton Ghost 15.0, a disk-cloning program that makes data migration much easier. With Norton Ghost's "Copy My Hard Drive" feature, you can copy your entire system to your SSD with just a few mouse clicks. The program creates an exact copy of your original computing environment; there's no need to reinstall your OS, patches, drivers, or other programs. Norton Ghost also provides a Software Recovery Disk service, which lets you easily restore your system if it crashes--even when your OS won't start up. Customizable, event-based backup features provide additional protection against unexpected data loss.
  • newegg Solid Brushed Metal Design The Samsung 470 Series Solid-State Drive features a sturdy, brushed metal hard shell case to protect it from shock, dust, and corrosion. The lack of moving parts also makes your data less susceptible to impact than with traditional hard disk drives. And, at 2.4 ounces, the device ensures that your laptop is lightweight and easy to carry. The drive's 2.5-inch form factor is compatible with most laptops, notebooks, and desktops.
  • newegg Longer Battery Life Why be burdened with the weight of extra batteries, when you’re on the move? With the Samsung SSD 470, you gain an average of 30 minutes extra battery life per charge vs. conventional HDDs. Since it has no moving parts like old-style HDDs, the Samsung SSD 470 consumes a lot less power, resulting in a longer battery life.

5 out of 5 eggsmy quiet and fast SSD

Pros: excellent upgrade. from 0 to 16 seconds, my dell d630 up and running. quiet. fast. 7.6 on Windows 7 index for primary hard disk

Cons: make sure you have a backup. historically SSDs fail silently. Acronis and windows image backup help

Other Thoughts: great upgrade. must have. never go back to regular 2.5" HD's

5 out of 5 eggsBest Value for the cash

Pros: Installed on a 1st gen evga X58 mobo with no issues. Came with the latest firmware, installed without a hitch, Norton Ghost came in handy migrating to the SSD as the new OS drive. May not be the fastest SSD on the market, but it still boots windows 7 in 12 seconds from post which is PLENTY fast for me.

Cons: Would have been nice if it came with a 2.5-3.5 conversion bracket, but luckily I live 2 miles from a major computer hardware store.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, quiet, best upgrade EVER!

Pros: Woah!!! I am totally blown away by this upgrade. Never been so happy with an upgrade. I heard and read about SSDs being fast, but never experienced. What a difference!!

I rebuilt my system on 10/15/11 with the new Samsung SSD and never looked back. Had a few long unidentified programs running during start up and had been tasking my 5400 rpm 500 GB Seagate for a very long time. Typical boot up times were over 5-7 minutes. Add that new plugins broke a few VS-2010 updates, I wanted to build the image so bad.

Cons: I am not looking forward to the day it may go belly-up. I heard/read that there are no failure indicators. The controller might just stop working! Ouch. Luckily I am using cloud storage and my data is safe on the network. But applications and OS have to be installed. I am also thinking about using Acronis D2D backup as well. But haven't got to it yet.

Other Thoughts: An awesome upgrade, just DO IT!!!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Comes with the latest firmware (AXM09B1Q) and after being set up properly maxes out the SATA II interface on my motherboard. Norton Ghost made transferring my old drive a breeze.

Cons: Even though it was the cheapest 256 Gb drive when I got it, it was still expensive.

5 out of 5 eggsGood HW, not so good SW

Pros: Bought for the reputation, the 256 GB replaces Intel 120GB which I have zero problem. So far so good.
Low power consumption which means longer life.

Cons: The Norton disk clone software is not as good as the one came with Intel SSD, overly complicated, first attempt it did not boot, ended up re-install everything.
The magician does not give out as much info as Intel.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat So Far!

Pros: Good price, free Norton Ghost, SSD speed, it comes with the latest firmware (so far), it's not a first-generation drive, nice Samsung SSD utility, 3-year warranty.

While loading a large virtual machine as a test, the drive averaged 170MB/s while reading and peaked at 203MB/s. While saving that VM, it averaged around 123MB/s, but it was variable due to other OS events. Used Windows Performance Monitor to chart throughput on a 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate with no BitLocker (yet). This is a fresh drive though.

Using Ghost, I migrated from a standard HDD without any big problems; directions were easy to follow if you're comfortable with selecting partitions, etc. This version of Ghost (15) will clone to the SSD using proper partition alignment, which is important for max performance. Win7 used TRIM and recognized the drive automatically. I did not have to activate Windows again.

Instead of getting the Samsung kit, I got a USB 3.0 drive enclosure, which was overall a better de

Cons: No problems with the drive itself so far, but I did get error messages with Ghost during the SSD cloning (EC8F17B3, EBAB03EE, Operating System API 10004 failed). However, chkdsk shows no problems and the machine is running fine so far. Also, the performance stats provided by the Samsung SSD utility seemed strange, better to use HD Tune or just PerfMon. Not SATA III. Can't tell if it has native encryption, website unclear, but I don't think so.

Other Thoughts: Use the Samsung SSD Magician utility to make some OS optimizations for you. Run "fsutil.exe behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" to confirm TRIM support in Windows 7 is enabled (Google/Bing it for more info). And try to leave 10% of the drive empty for wear leveling; there's a feature for this in the Samsung SSD Magician tool too. Formatted with NTFS, Win7 reports a 238GB capacity. Samsung warranty might replace the drive if faulty, but they also might give only a 75% credit after 12 months or a 50% credit after 24 months (it's not necessarily a 100% credit for all three years of the warranty).

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Price, speed, ease of installation.

Cons: None, yet. See: "other thoughts"

Other Thoughts: Replaced a 500gb Seagate Momentus XT in an "Early 2011" 13" Macbook Pro. The Mementus was much better than the stock drive, but this Samsung just blows the Seagate away. At first the MBP ran the fans, got hot and the Geekbench score dropped to 5600. But after I enabled TRIM support through the Terminal (Google it), the fans stopped and the MBP ran cool. Geekbench score jumped to 6100 and the MBP boot time was an astonishing 12 seconds!!! Great drive at a great price. Hope they return to "in stock" status soon. We'll see how this fares in the long-run.
