Designed for performance enthusiasts and gamers who want to add flash and dazzle to their systems. The black PCB and heat spreader of Crucial's Ballistix Tracer modules add a stylish touch to your system. But what sets these modules apart is the LEDs . . . they're not just for bling, though that's nice, too. A custom-designed circuit relays bus activity to the LEDs, allowing them to accurately reflect usage of each memory module.

This 2GB kit (1GBx2) is designed to take advantage of dual channel mode for increased performance. The PC2-8500 memory can transfer a whopping 8.5GB/s of data ensuring that the memory subsystem isn't the bottleneck that slows your system.

  • newegg Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 SDRAM The Ballistix line of high-performance memory modules features advanced speed grades, low latencies and integrated aluminum heat spreaders. Built for performance enthusiasts and case modders who want to push the performance envelope while adding flash appeal to their boxes, Ballistix Tracer memory features a black PCB, black integrated heat spreaders and one or two rows of eight "chasing" red and green LEDs atop the module, circulating in a random pattern based on memory utilization.
  • newegg DDR2 1066 DDR2 1066 delivers incredible performance and platform compatibility with up to 8.5GB/s memory bandwidth per channel for scintillating work and gaming power!

1 out of 5 eggsfailed after 4 years

Pros: shiny LEDs

Cons: I discovered the hard way (random crashes, ultimately bizarre memory corruption and segfaulting) that this RAM failed around the 3 or 4 year mark. I'm not exactly sure when -- I had stability issues before and it might have failed much earlier. Verified by memtest86+ -- numerous errors. Replaced the ram and memtest86+ gave it a clean bill of health. I've never had RAM fail in a PC before this.

3 out of 5 eggsi'm back

Pros: perfectly functional RAM

Cons: they failed after a year.
in my initial review i said i "wouldn't get sick of the light show". i did. within a week. i replaced the RAM for this reason and gave them to my dad. one of the sticks then failed after a year of ownership.

Other Thoughts: it's not christmas yet. you don't need lights in your computer case.

Pros: bought it on sale

Cons: A few months in, one of the chips died. Crucial RMA'd it very quickly and easily. 2 years later, another chip died. I never had RAM fail.

1 out of 5 eggsWould not recomand.

Pros: Got it to replace my dead 2x1GB sticks. Worked will for about a two weeks till I started to get....

Cons: Tons of BSOD crash after crash after a crash. Ran Memtest that pretty much showed nothing but errors for each pattern. Only bought this ram because I thought the Crucial Ballistix was a preimum line of ram and would replace the other RAM that I had with this...

Other Thoughts: The only reason why I even went with Crucial was because two years ago I picked up a laptop and in the community Mushkin and Crucial was highly recommended if you wanted to up your RAM. After getting these and having terrible experience I will never buy another set of Crucial ram again thinking I'll get something premium when in fact it was not.
Bought some Gskill DDR800 to replace these and the Corsair (crossing fingers).
FOOD for thought: my old system that I'm using to run lunix to play around on is running on a DFi LanParty Ultra-D MOBO with a AMD FX53 Clawhammer core CPU. The ram? PQi DDR 2x512MB sticks that's been reliable for over four years. I guess price doesn't buy quality these days.

1 out of 5 eggsCaveat Emptor!

Pros: Pretty lights

Cons: Pretty lights stop changing when computer Bluescreens which happens continuously past the first week of ownership. I purchased two of these kits, both lasted around 1 week. Both were replaced by Newegg including return shipping at their expense. Both of the replacements went DOA within a week as well.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy them for the lights, I bought them because they were supposed to be "performance" memory. I suppose since I wanted to use them in a server for the next 3 years, I was picking the wrong application, these must be geared toward folks who buy computers weekly so they can always have the best performance. My new thoughts are to stay away from Crucial *forever* and go back to something tried and true, like Kingston or PQI.

2 out of 5 eggsdon't buy this sticks, it wastes your money!

Pros: the LEDs are very pretty, it has 5 different colors and switchs every seconds.

Cons: The one of picture shows in newegg, those are awesome which are D9 chipest, however, newegg will ship you a XXXOXXO non-overclocked ability ballistix to you , it sounds like a trick. But it's true. Pick some 20 bucks stick, they should have very similar prefermonce as this one.
If you buy this, do not try to RMA it to crucial for hoping get a better performance memory. They will give you worse and worse. However, the RMA process is super fast!

Other Thoughts: Q9400, P5E flashed, the maxium speed is 1081Mhz.

1 out of 5 eggsCrucial is slipping

Pros: Pretty lights....

Cons: Previous stick of standard Crucial (yellow) DDR2 1066 failed. I figured the Tracer would be premium memory, so I decided to upgrade. I immediately noticed this memory is only rated to 2 volts, where the stock is rated at 2.2. The Tracer would not boot at the old settings, so I lost quite a bit of performance by going with the Tracer sticks. Save your money, because this memory is the worst deal I've experienced. The cheaper (half this price) OCZ 1066 runs much faster.

Other Thoughts: Seems like Crucial performance and reliability has really slipped. I've used a lot of Crucial memory in the past, and was always quick to recommend their memory. Lately I've had nothing but bad luck with Crucial. These tracer sticks are a real dud. Overpriced, and underperformance. Go with the OCZ, it's cheaper, faster, and the heat spreaders look better.

4 out of 5 eggsNewegg bilked me out of rebate

Pros: Good fast memory. Pretty lights

Cons: Had a $40 rebate for the dual channel kit, but NewEgg shipped them in 4 static packages and when I sent those to Crucial, I was told my rebate wasnt valid due to incorrect packaging and wrong model number!!!! Almost like a scam between NewEgg and Crucial!!!!

Other Thoughts: Would have been much happier if I got the rebate!!

2 out of 5 eggs2nd RA round

Pros: Crucial customer service is very responsive. Love the lights!

Cons: This is my second post on this memory. I RA'd the first 2GB as they died shortly after I installed them. Crucial just sent me a new set and they were DOA. PC would not boot. The heat spreader now has a clip on the top which keeps the spreaders together at the top, BUT separates them at the bottom. This is a very poor design.

Very uncertain if the new set will work OR even last?

Another RA.

Other Thoughts: The cost to return the defective memory will soon begin to approach the cost of the memory itself. A loss leader.

I am very uncertain if the new set will work OR even last?
