1 out of 5 eggsDead Drive

Pros: Very fast, I was impressed with this SSD for about 3 months then it died.

Cons: SSD died after about 3 months and they won't RMA it.
This item was purchased more than 30 days ago and is no longer eligible for a replacement RMA.

Other Thoughts: No More Crucial for me, they don't stand behind their product.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in 5 Weeks

Pros: Price (got it for less than a hundred)

Cons: Within five weeks of use in my desktop PC, the drive failed. I tried recovering my data on three different systems (Windows and Linux), but received an I/O Error on each system.

Other Thoughts: I use six other SSDs, and the only other one besides the Crucial that I've had a problem with is a Samsung 840 (which was replaced with a refurb unit by Samsung, and the replacement has been fine for a year now.) I haven't received the replacement for this Crucial SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid drive

Pros: Very fast and great price

Cons: Lack of software. Crucial does not have cloning software to copy your existing OS on to this drive.

Other Thoughts: This is a perfect for a "NEW" install

5 out of 5 eggsGreat ssd

Pros: Good so far, Everything cloned right over plenty of space I have windows, chrome and bf4 and a few other small programs installed and am at 90gb. I will definately be putting more on it. Dropped boot times of my 1st gen i7 on an x58 board from 4 min to about 15 seconds, 20 with chrome open! I have it installed with a syba sata 3 cotroller card to get sata 3 speeds (see possible cons below) and it is 10x faster then my old hdd on sata 2. There is a recebt firmware update out there on the crucial website that might help these people having problems but I didnt need to mess with it.

Cons: I am not quite getting the listed read speeds. I am getting 350mbs read but good with 550 on write. Like I said earlier this is likely beacuse of my setup with the controller card but could just be my older cpu as well. Its stell a huge speed upgrade and I dont think reaching the upper limit of the ssd would be a noticable difference when your comming from the 60 or 70mps range with my old hdd, and on sale for 80 bucks can you really complain?

4 out of 5 eggsOne good and one not so good

Pros: Bought 2 Crucial M550's to upgrade 2 desktops which had smaller older SSD's. The first was cloned in ~40 minutes and performed flawlessly when installed. New SSD is faster and has double the capacity of the SSD replaced. Great drive to update an older SSD or replace a HDD.

Cons: The second drive was much more problematic. First attempt to clone failed. The second took nearly 12 hours to complete. Appeared to be successful but system crashed at start of Windows boot. Tried a third attempt to clone using a different computer to drive the cloning process. Process took 2 hours. But similar to the second attempt crashed during Windows boot. Best guess there is a defect in the controller in the "not so good" drive. Sent back to Newegg for replacement.

Other Thoughts: Newegg's RMA process is simple and efficient. Had a RMA in minutes for replacement of the bad drive. I rate Newegg's RMA process with 5 eggs. The only frustration, which is not Neweggs fault, is being without the needed SSD until the process completes and the cost of postage to return the defective drive. I buy a lot from Newegg and in the past 5 years or so I have only had to return 2 products (both defective) and Newegg handled both returns cordially and efficiently, meeting or exceeding expectations.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good.

Pros: Installed drive in a HP laptop along with Storage Executive software. Updated firmware and ran benchmark - all numbers right on the mark.
So far the M550 is performing as advertised.
This is my 1st Crucial SSD after using many OCZ and Samsung drives.

As usual the service was excellent from Newegg and the price was "a steal" at the time of purchase - $89.99

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Because of issues posted here about warranty and customer service, I have developed my "200 Rule". If an item cost $200, or less, and I have any issues with it, it goes into the trash can ASAP and I never buy that brand again. It is not worth wasting my time and patience for a few $$s. Luckily I have only had to apply the "rule" 1 time with any product from Newegg, and I've gotten a lot of items from Newegg in the past few years :-)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy install using WD clone s/w. No errors. Installed firmware update using Crucial s/w, Storage Executive Client. Much improved start up and response.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This is enough to encourage to change all my boot drives to SSD, and Newegg is my first choice for value and service. Laptop done 5 towers to go.

2 out of 5 eggsNothing but headaches

Pros: Cheap & fast, plus has RAIN for supposed reliability.

Cons: Where to start:
1. Has compatibility issues with AMD RAID configurations.
2. This model and it's predecessor have issues where it either disconnects or crashes Windows, including having Windows crash upon reboot.
3. Crucial has been aware of this problem since August of 2014 and has done nothing about it.

Just this morning I had finished installing g everything and was downloading some files off the net. I left the computer and came back about 30 minutes later, and discovered a black screen with a blinking light. I shook my mouse and pressed some keys thinking my computer just put the display on stand-by; no response. I rebooted by pressing the reset button and Windows would start to load and then hang. Tried using Windows 8.1's startup repair utility with no success. This is the second time I have reinstalled Windows to try to get my system to run reliably with this drive. I have the most up-to-date BIOS, drivers, and Windows patches. This is obviously a known design issue that Crucial fails to acknowledge.

I am totally fed up trying to get my system to reliably work with this drive. I am going to get an RMA and send it back to night.

Other Thoughts: I should have listened to my friend's advice and stick with Intel or Samsung, this drive is garbage. I couldn't believe that Crucial has been aware of this issue and has not issued a firmware update to fix it. I love their RAM, but they permanently lost my business for SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsCrucial M550 SSD

Pros: I installed the 256Gb 2.5" M550 drive as a replacement boot drive for my Mac Pro. Works Great! Made a huge difference in all things I/O related. Boots way faster. Very Happy! This is the 2nd M550 SSD that I have purrchased. The first was a 128Gb M.2 style that I used for the boot drive of a recent PC build. It runs like lightening so I was comfortable going back to Crucial when it was time to replace the boot drive in my Mac.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I trust Crucial for all my Mac memory upgrades, both at home and at work. Their pricing is reasonable by comparison with much of the competition, and micron has always had a great reputation for excellence.
