5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: Swapped from 840 Pro drives to these. These can hold their own against the Samsung.
Haven't lost a single one out of hundreds I have in production

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Would love to see this or MX200 drives available in 2TB sizes.

5 out of 5 eggsSatisfaction

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: Fast and reliable.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I use a lot of huge samples and VST plugins for music production and I had to run them on an SSD. Since then, everything runs smoothly and fast! Great product!

2 out of 5 eggs9 months and out

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: No complaints until it died.

Cons: Died after 9 months of limited use. Disappointing. I have about 5 computers in family and haven't had a HD fail in over 4 years.

1 out of 5 eggsCrucial Trouble

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: It may have been fast had I been able to get it working; My other Crucial 250gb Drive is fast.

Cons: No software, no cloning cable sent with drive, No amount of time spent could get this drive to work, Upgrading drivers and Intel software was no avail. Used Crucial software and cable from earlier SSD drive purchase no go. I used 3rd party cable and software finally got it to boot for 5 seconds then the BSOD. I have a Dell XPS8700 one month old. Just do a Google search on this drive I am not alone in my frustration. Has to pay $20.00 to return for RMA.

Other Thoughts: Get a Samsung or Intel works everytime

4 out of 5 eggsIts ok

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: Its 1tb and has lots of error correction/prevention built-in. Tremendous performance improvement compared to the 1tb re3 raid1 3ware 9650 array it replaced.. obviously. Noise, temperature, and electricity usage dropped significantly.

Cons: Since connecting to my system, has introduced some random reboots. Still narrowing down the issue. Have eliminated the OS drive as root cause.

Other Thoughts: System: asus z77 with 3770 cpu using onboard video. 32gb of memory with Samsung 850 512mb drive using Win 7 x64 sp1.

1 out of 5 eggsMacBook Pro Users Stay Away

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: I bought the M550 1TB SSD to replace a Plextor M5 256 GB SSD + 1 TB hard disc combination in my 2011 MacBook Pro. Battery life has increased and overall performance is better.

Cons: System stability has plummeted. The M550 SSD does not work with Mavericks and greater (on Yosemite now). If you are a Mac user, stay far, far away. Your computer will randomly freeze, reboot, and have other problems that Crucial will not recognize. Their only solution is to send you another drive to replace your existing drive. Because this is a firmware problem, that solution won't do anything other than leave your computer useless for weeks.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product!

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: (I have two of these that I'm using inside my Dell Precision M6600 Workstation, with an i7 2760QM processor. I've had one drive for about 3 months; the other, about 1 month.)

1. Made my Micron Technologies, one of the only two leading edge NAND manufacturers I know of (the other being Sandisk).
2. VERY fast. Copying huge files (up to 50GB in size) from one drive to the other resulted in steady transfer speeds that matched stated specs).
3. RAIN technology, similar to RAID-1 (mirroring), built into each drive. This gives me higher confidence than other SSDs that I will not lose data or end up with corrupted data, and it gives me MUCH higher confidence than a traditional spinning/magnetic disk would give me.
4. Crucial is the only company I know of who provides exhaustive lists of compatible systems, right from their main web page. Select your make and model on their main page to see which of their drives and memory are compatible with your system. They claim to actually test these in each system before adding it to the compatibility list, and I have confidence enough in the brand to believe they speak the truth.
5. Crucial's tech support is knowledgeable and responsive. I emailed them with technical questions, which they were very quick to respond to, with very clear and confident answers.
6. The drives have performed excellently as stand-alone drives, as well as in a striped (RAID-0) configuration.
7. I have experienced zero issues with data/file integrity.

Cons: The only con I can possibly think of is one that will not be unique to Crucial, nor is it a fault of this particular drive, in any way. In fact, in all but one case, it was due to user error, but something you should be aware of.

My computer froze twice in the first week after installing my first SSD. In both cases, I had to turn the machine off, eject the drive, then reinsert it, then restart the system. The second time it happened, I realized that I had neglected to add the spacer that comes with the drive; the drive is only 7mm (typical for SSDs from any manufacturer), whereas the bays are 9mm (9mm is the standard size for the spinning/magnetic drives). This meant that I had effectively left the drive *hanging* from its connector, inside the laptop. Once I added the spacer, the system remained stable for a couple months. Within a week of buying the second 1TB M550 drive and configuring my system for RAID-1 (striped) configuration, the same lock-up occurred, even though I had included the spacers. I was able to resolve this by: turning my system off, ejecting and reinserting the drives, going into my BIOS during boot-up (so it could re-detect the drives), then rebooting. Since doing that, I have had no further issues. This is something that could likely happen with *any* drive, so I'm taking no points off from the product.

Other Thoughts: Due to the M550 having RAIN technology (which is also included in their MX100 line), I feel *very* comfortable relying on these as fast, external drives, to be used for regular (daily-weekly) file and system back-ups, to ensure that I will never lose much important data, nor time due to system failures. If my system *were* to ever fail --or if I corrupted it through misconfiguration, or installation of bad software-- I can quickly restore it to a recent state using backups from one of these external drives.

5 out of 5 eggsCrucial is great

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: It is fast.
iTunes acquires the library in seconds not a hour.
Crucial tech support is great.
It's really fast.

Cons: Didn't work at first but with a little help it runs great.

Other Thoughts: Crucial tech support really knows their stuff. When I installed it I could see it in BIOS but no where in windows (I had a crucial ssd in drive 0 to boot from before my brand new HDD fried). In command prompt I was able to list it as drive 1 but not see it in disk management. He had me clean it which made it show up in dsk mgmt but still it had no drive letter. Somehow it arrived unformatted and/or wouldn't work with my sata drivers, tech phone support had never heard of this before. We ended up uninstalling the sata drivers then rebooting and cleaning once more.

It's now up and running. Fast.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat upgrade

This review is from: Crucial M550 2.5" 1TB SATA 6Gb/s MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT1024M550SSD1

Pros: _Large capacity, with SSD speed.
_Stability.
_Light.
_No noise or moving parts.
_My programs will function instantly now.
_Agree with another reviewer here, it is a lot better to do this than blow a lot more money on another laptop. My laptop is 4 years old and this makes it act like a new toy.

Cons: Meh, all worked for me.

Would be neat if Micron could make a widget that can report to you the space available, temp, etc.

Other Thoughts: It is unfortunate to read that there were a number of unstable units delivered to others, but I never experienced any issues. I purchased the Crucial/Micron disk cloner (EZ Gig software with SATA-to-USB cable) and that has worked perfectly on 10+ clones for laptop and desktop HDD to SDD. Was just simple plug-n-plays.
