Intel Solid State Drives (Intel SSDs) represent a revolutionary breakthrough that delivers a giant leap in storage performance. The high-performance storage for notebook and desktop PCs, Intel X18-M, is now made on 34nm NAND flash memory featuring the Intel Solid State Drive (Intel SSD) Toolbox. With sustained sequential read speed up to 250MB/s and write speed up to 70MB/s, the Intel X18-M mainstream SSDs are designed to satisfy the most demanding gamers, media creators, and technology enthusiasts. These drives bring a high level of performance and reliability to notebook and desktop PC storage, at a fraction of the cost of the previous generation of Intel SSD products.

  • newegg Wait less. Do more Why wait for a traditional hard disk drive to spin up? Unlike traditional hard disk drives, Intel SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly rugged storage solution that also offers faster system responsiveness. And for laptop PCs, the lower power needs of Intel SSDs translate to longer battery life and lighter notebooks. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better by design Drawing from decades of memory engineering experience, and now on new, industry-leading compute-quality 34nm NAND flash memory manufacturing processes, Intel Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives are designed to deliver outstanding performance, featuring the latest-generation native SATA interface with an advanced architecture employing 10 parallel NAND flash channels equipped with multi-level cell NAND flash memory. With powerful Native Command Queuing to enable up to 32 concurrent operations, Intel Mainstream SATA SSDs deliver higher input/output per second and throughput performance than other SSDs on the market today – and drastically outperform traditional hard disk drives. These drives also feature low write amplification and a unique wear-leveling design for higher reliability, meaning Intel drives not only perform better – they last longer.
  • newegg Intel SSD Toolbox with Intel SSD Optimizer The Intel SSD Toolbox with Intel SSD Optimizer provides a set of applications to easily manage the health and optimize the performance of your Intel SSD. The Intel SSD Toolbox includes a powerful set of management, information, and diagnostic tools, and is designed to work best with 34nm Intel SSDs. The Intel SSD Optimizer utilizes the new ATA Data Set Management Command (Trim Attribute) to help maintain your SSDs performance at "fresh-out-of-the-box" levels, and is specifically designed to run with Microsoft Windows 7. The Intel SSD Optimizer also works with Microsoft Windows Vista and XP operating systems as well.

5 out of 5 eggsBest solution when a 1.8" uSata drive is required

Pros: Perfectly replaced the stock [Toshiba 250GB 5400rpm 1.8"] drive in a Lenovo T410s for improved performance and less risk of drive failure due to shaking the laptop. Excellent performance as expected with all Intel G2 SSD's -- read the reviews on the X25-M 80GB for benchmarks.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I purchased the StarTech MCSATAADAP Micro SATA adapter (not stocked my newegg as of now) in order to access the Toshiba 250GB drive while outside of the laptop. This adapter may be able to be used with the SSD to install it in a desktop, but it probably won't work in a 2.5" laptop bay (I haven't tried either of these).

Supposedly the G3 25nm 1.8" drives won't be available until Q1 2011.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for people who need it.

Pros: This drive is a fantastic bargain for users of ultra-thin laptops like my Thinkpad X300. The X300 can only use 1.8” drives, so there is not much choice. The 1.8” drives usually cost more than the 2.5” equivalents, but the X18-M costs the about same as the X25-M. This is a very fast alternative to mechanical 1.8” drives or older SSDs (like the one that came with my X300 two years ago.)

Cons: No disadvantage at all, unless you buy it for the wrong application.

Other Thoughts: I repeat: this drive is just for thin laptops and tablets that can only use 1.8” HDs or SSDs (SATA.) Don't buy it for any other application. Don't write bad reviews of this great product if you don't know what you are doing! And if you don't know what you are doing, your “Tech Level” is, by definition, not “high” or even “somewhat high.”

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Great drive. Has TRIM support, was a drop-in upgrade for my Dell XT2 convertible tablet, and absolutely smokes the 1.8" 5400 RPM HDD it replaced. (There are no 7200 RPM 1.8" drives on the market as of this writing)

Cons: Expensive. If you're restricted to 1.8" drives though, this is about par for the course. The $/GB ratio on the RunCore is about the same as the Intel. And with the Intel you're getting 34nm NAND (which might be slightly more battery-friendly, but probably negligible) and Intel firmware. The RunCore uses 50nm NAND and Indilinx firmware.

Other Thoughts: If you're considering the X18-M, you only have a handful of real options. I believe the RunCore Pro IV might be the only realistic one on the market. For all the reviews complaining about a Micro-SATA connector- do your research before buying. Standard SATA connectors are too wide to fit on a 1.8" drive.

2 out of 5 eggs1.8 inch and 2.5 inch incompatible

Pros: Probably works for the small hand held scanners but not correct SSD for a desktop PC.

Cons: The connector is a mini-sata or micro-sata and will not mate with normal sata cables and connectors. No adapters are included. Could not find an adapter to use this 1.8 inch device where a 2.5 inch device is required. Hate to pay Newegg over $35 to take it back. Be sure you REALLY need a 1.8 inch SSD before ordering this item.

Other Thoughts: The 2.5 inch SSD is standard. The 1.8 is special. Do not order this item unless your are sure which SSD size is required.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic SSD in a hard-to-get format.

Pros: It came with the latest firmware (version DH.)
Very fast, Linux tests give read speed about 140MB/s, write speed about 80MB/s (this is higher than specified!)
Only drive that will fit my laptop, much faster than 1.8” mechanical drives, which are only available in 5400 RPM.
Price very reasonable, considering the hard-to-get form factor.

Cons: I can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: I have installed this drive in an old lenovo X100 laptop. It can use only 1.8” drives, so this is the only reasonably priced drive that would fit. It runs Ubuntu 10.04RC – 32-bit. I will try the AMD-64 version next.

4 out of 5 eggsCan't wait to try it, need Micro SATA Power Connector

Pros: It's an SSD. From Intel.

Cons: So I was really excited to try this drive out (my first SSD) and I knew i couldn't find a bracket necessarily to go from 1.8" to 2.5" but oh well, saving $60 would be worth it. The specifications do not mention the need for a Micro SATA power connector. You cannot use a normal SATA power or Molex connector to drive this, and you can barely see the Keyed notch in the picture that you would know this requires something different. Oh well, My Fault.
