2 out of 5 eggsMeh

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast (like any SSD...), low cost, 2.5" form factor saves space, SATA III

Cons: Low cost? More like cheap. Crashed on me after 3 months. My laptop went to sleep and when I went to wake it up a few days later, found it to be hot -- not normal for a laptop that has been in sleep mode for a few days. Popped open the back of the laptop and the SSD was hotter than anything else.

Other Thoughts: It worked until it died. It is now completely fried and unresponsive. When I plug it into my hard drive cradle, Windows recognizes the SandForce controller but does not recognize it as a hard drive. I lost a lot of data, mostly schoolwork. Bummer.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Much faster than my old 1 TB HDD. PNY has relatively decent customer support regarding my RMA.

Cons: Originally purchased from Newegg in July 2014, died early 2015. After a quick RMA process (though they needed proof of purchase, save those confirmation emails) PNY sent me a new SSD around Feb. 2015. Today (May 2015) the 2nd PNY SSD died on me.

The first SSD had issues with deteriorating write speeds as well as missing MBR problems. When my 2nd SSD died, my computer crashed with no warning. Upon restarting my PC the missing MBR error popped up again, however using start up repair didn't fix the problem. After installing windows on a separate drive, Windows is unable to recognize the PNY SSD. Drive is officially dead and I lost data that I haven't been able to recover.

Other Thoughts: I'm a forgiving person when a computer part dies the first time and a company's customer support is helpful with the RMA process. However, being that this component died twice in less than a year, I feel the need to warn others about my experience and this product.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 10 months

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Keeps my spare papers from blowing away.

Cons: Failed after 10 months, worked fine until then but failing after 10 months is still inexcusable. It appears from reading these reviews that these drives have a pretty high failure rate, so my advice would be to go with a different ssd from a different company, these are garbage.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 4 months, Win 7 64 bit OS

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Worked very well, breathed new life in aging (4 year old) laptop PC

Cons: Drive suffered catastrophic failure, drive no longer recognized by PC. Tried multiple ways to attempt recovery / reformat but the controller is no longer recognized by the BIOS or with an external SATA Dock

1 out of 5 eggsDead in 8 months!

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price

Cons: It appears the failure rate is high on these drives. They were willing to replace it but it could take 2 weeks. The client wasn't willing to wait and is buying a new laptop. Not Intel service either.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Macbook Pro

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Works with MBP.
-Much faster than HDD
-(insert SDD perks here)

Cons: -No built in TRIM

Other Thoughts: Works perfectly for my girlfriend's 2011 MBP. The old HDD was showing signs of failing so I replaced it with this drive. A nothing special, no frills drive. I'm getting close to the rated speeds too so that's a plus. The only gripe is with Apple enabling KEKT signing closing the door to 3rd party TRIM control, so TRIM can't be enabled without leaving a massive security hole open and system stability going to hell. Again, This is not against the drive, but another tick against Apple.

1 out of 5 eggsFailing, No RMA Allowed.

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It's an SSD, it loads fast lots of space.

Cons: The drive started to fail 3 months in. Sectors are already dying.

So it is a year in, and now the CDI of the drive has dropped the percentage from 100% to 97%. There are random slowdowns, and I lost some files from my Sims 3 game. Yay?

I called PNY b/c their site doesn't have a working page for consumer RMAs. Yay part 2?

This is what PNY told me:
> If the drive is working, we are going to send it back to you.

> If you want us to cross-ship, there is a $30 non-refundable fee, plus the cost of the drive. No way. Corsair does cross-ship, and only requires that the sender pay the shipping fee.

> PNY offers no tools to do drive SMART checking. But they don't want you to use a 3rd party to check drives. So you get nothing.

> Try it in another computer? I don't have a billion PCs to test this thing in?

All I can say is, do not buy this drive, and do not buy from PNY. I will be attempting to reprocess this through my credit card and warranty there.

Other Thoughts: Not buying from PNY again unless the drive is like $5.

2 out of 5 eggsGARBAGE

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: While it lasted it worked well

Cons: Failed after less than 3 months

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!!! I got this less than 4 months ago and it worked awesome for about 2; after that it just crapped out and will not even show up in the bios more than half the time... occasionally it will work and boot from it and even then it is glacial slow and always ends up making the whole system crash. I was naive to not listen to reviews that were on here... MY advice, go with the Samsung 850 EVO or 850 PRO, much better drive for the same price..

2 out of 5 eggsPass this one up

This review is from: PNY XLR8 SSD9SC240GMDA-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast

Cons: Was turning off and unstable since the install but worked none the less. After 5 months it died completely.

Other Thoughts: The company is not open on weekends you will just get a circle tree of an answering system. I got them first thing Monday morning. They asked for my receipt and are sending me a new one after I send them the failed one.
The time lost does not compensate for the $120 I spent.
