1 out of 5 eggsSlooooow SSD

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: None.

Cons: 15mb/s read/write speeds across a few benchmarks. My computer is functioning for the time being, but this is slower than my regular HDD. Installation was a headache and took two reinstalls of Windows 7 for this drive to even show up in the BIOS properly. Horribly slow boot times, worse than ever before.

Other Thoughts: I will be sending this back and have already ordered a Samsung 540 EVO.

4 out of 5 eggsNot sure yet, maybe good.

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Cheap, looks cool, fast

Cons: I'm not sure, but i have been having some issues. I think it's this SSD, but i'm not sure yet. I built a PC for a friend and every now and then when you reboot it, it doesn't see the hard drive. (this SSD). I think it's going bad, or came bad. Not sure yet though..

Other Thoughts: On SSD's i would spend a little more next time and get Kingston. More reliable.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: High performance SSD. Upgraded from my old 320GB HDD and my computer flys.

Cons: No 2.5" to 3.5" adapter with it, but with 99% of modern cases supporting the 2.5" size, not really a big deal.

4 out of 5 eggsGood SSD, but ignore after rebate price

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Windows boots so fast now and programs launch almost instantaneously.

-Fast for the price* (see other thoughts)

-Sturdy metal case

Cons: -No sata cable included

-Rebate is a joke (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I am great with rebates, I've almost exclusively built a computer using only parts that had rebates and I've received every one of them.

However this PNY rebate is the exception. PNY claims that my purchase date was invalid. Looking through my records and at the fine print on their form... nope I am definitively eligible for the rebate and I even mailed the rebate form weeks before the final deadline.

Looking at the other reviews for this SSD others also had problems with not receiving their rebate. So if you are thinking of getting the drive for the price after rebate... you won't.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst drive bad, second one super fast.

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Benchmarks faster than the Samsung EVO using Samsung Magician.
-Price/gb is nice on these drives.
-RMA and technical support work very well. Something of a rarity these days.

Cons: -First drive I received had issues (bad data cells), could not RMA through Newegg due to rebate. Thankfully, PNY RMA worked well.
-Speeds are not the fastest possible, but adequate for the price
-SMI controller is not quite as quick as SandForce, but each controller has it's fans...

Other Thoughts: I initially purchased this SSD to run my OS from and store a few slow loading games. The OS install went poorly and it turned out that the drive had errors. I tried RMAing through Newegg, but could not as I had already sent in the rebate. Thankfully PNY tech support and the RMA process through them was smooth and easy. I actually received the replacement drive only 2 business days after they received my bad drive.

I am very happy with the new drive. As mentioned, the drive actually benchmarks faster than the more costly Samsung EVO. Now I just use it as program and game storage for anything I want to load (near) instantly. I would buy this drive again, even with the bad first drive, but only if on sale. If another drive of the same size was the same price, I would probably go with the other drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWEI of 7.9

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: performance. noticeable performance gains in boot time, program installation, virus scans, etc.

Cons: price per GB compared to standard HDDs, not sure if there are any others, maybe MTBF compared to regular HDDs?

Other Thoughts: surprised that a single one of these gave me a WEI of 7.9
my other SSD drives had to be in a RAID array to get 7.9

4 out of 5 eggsMy First SSD and Ran Some Tests / Mac

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Economically Priced. Very Fast.

Cons: None So Far

Other Thoughts: Here is rundown of what I did after getting the PNY SSD 240GB delivered the other day. Figured I’ll never know if there was any performance improvement on older models unless I start with it first. Cloning software used was SuperDuper! of various versions.

* * *
PowerBook G4 (2005, 1.67 GHz, 2 GB RAM): Mac OS 10.5.8 (still retain 10.3.7 and 10.4.11).

IDE Internal Drive 250GB HDD Boot Time: 1’47” (1), 1’14” (2).
FW800 Connect SSD 240GB Boot Time: 1’34” (1), 1’03” (2), 1’10” (3), 1’05” (4). ('=minutes, "=seconds, number of times of boot made in parenthesis)

Although boot time improvement is there, it’s not enough to justify the use of SSD. Besides, it took over 24 hours to clone the original drive - painfully slow (but still somewhat faster than doing on HDD).

* * *
Moved the 10.5.8 resident SSD to Mac Pro (Early 2008, 8-core 2.8 GHz, 16 GB RAM) in Drive Bay 1.

2008 Mac Pro: 10.5.8

SATA Connect SSD 240GB Boot Time: 0’15” (1), 0’17” (2), 0’18” (3), 0’18” (4).
SATA Internal Drive 1TB HDD Boot Time: 1’24” (1), 1’06” (2).

* * *
Erased SSD and cloned 10.9.4 from SATA 1TB HDD: 5:17’25"

2008 Mac Pro: 10.9.4

SATA Connect SSD 240GB Boot Time: 0’23” (1), 0’20” (2), 0’20” (3).
SATA Internal Drive 1TB HDD Boot Time: 1’28” (1), 1’08” (2).

Few things I noticed:
1. The integrity of files appears to be much more tight and accurate than on HDDs
2. In making SuperDuper cloning, there were less files being copied onto HDDs from the second cloning on immediately after the first.
3. The OS environment feels more solid. Not just it doesn’t take as much time, but it shows up in display in more concrete way.
4. The reboot has occasional problem when I change to another OS (or another drive). Seems it can’t pick up boot files upon rebooting, staying white blank screen without Apple logo. This might be a new norm and other devices in MP is not really used to it. Might take some time for the machine to get used to. (as of this typing, this problem appears to have gone away).

1 out of 5 eggsLasted only 1 month

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: none

Cons: If you going to make a product that will only last a month then do us all a favor and don't...i replaced my 3 year old 120gb Intel drive that was running out of space...boy was that a bad decision, from a drive that never had a single issue for over 3 years to cheap drive which lasted only a month...first and last drive from this company...

Other Thoughts: I may have saved a few $ but lost few years worth of data and personal files, ironically my backup drive (external 4tb seagate drive) died 2 weeks before this drive decided to die. So both my main OS drive and the drive which it had a image backup of the drive...talk about bad luck...

3 out of 5 eggsPNY SSD

This review is from: PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Good price for a lot of SSD storage.

Cons: I'm replacing a 64GB Crucial for a friend with this and used Clonezilla. I have done two other builds with other SSD's using the software and have had no issues. I did find that after cloning, I had to change the drive letters for the two rotating memory drives, so the system would at least work; some programs were installed on drive D:, since the 64GB was limited in space. Once I had all that fixed and rebooted, the PNY had much slower boot times than the Crucial, plus just navigating through Windows Explorer and browsing the web weren't as snappy. Thinking maybe something was flaky with the clone, I installed Ubuntu 14.04 with the PNY as the only drive. It seems OK, but nowhere near what the Crucial can do. I have an Adata with Win7 on my computer, along with a Samsung with Win8, since my mobo has a boot menu. Both of those drives just work with phenomenal boot times.

Other Thoughts: As one other reviewer noted, this may be dependent upon the controller, although I had a number of "not responding" errors, even after sorting out the drive letters. I didn't change any of the cables - used the same one that the Crucial did.
