ADATA’s S511 utilizes the new generation SandForce SF-2200 series controller, with native support for the SATA 6Gb/s platform. The S511 completely brings into play the revolutionary high-speed performance of solid state drives, embracing a new world of transfer performance. With read and write speeds twice that of SSDs using the older SATA II specification, the S511 reached 550/520MB read and write speeds respectively, with 4K random write speeds as high as 60,000 IOPS in real world testing. The S511 takes productivity, gaming, and multimedia applications to the next level to work in perfect symmetry with the latest enthusiast platforms, while easily integrating into today’s mobile and desktop platforms with Windows 7 TRIM support.

  • newegg Enhanced Computing Efficiency Currently, the major processor platforms are gradually making the changeover to native SATA 6Gb/s chips. However, traditional mechanical drives are not capable of the corresponding high-speed read and write tasks. The S511 solid state drive provides vibration-free running and low power consumption while taking full advantage of the 6Gb/s bandwidth transmission capability. In both desktop and laptop computers, and in a broad range of computing environments, SSDs built to the latest specification are an irreplaceable advantage.
  • newegg TRIM Support The S511 adopts specially selected Flash chips from reliable manufacturers, and supports the Windows TRIM command (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2). TRIM optimization command can directly delete stored data in the Flash memory and release unused space (Free Blocks) to be used for system writes immediately. This results in more accelerated transfer and write performance for solid state drives, and is also effective in slowing down efficiency decline and depletion chances, maintaining effective operation and extending the life of the disk.
  • newegg System Backup Tools Eliminate Installation Operating Procedures All purchasers of the S511 can download the free Disk Migration Utility software. It facilitates the quick transfer of all files to the new solid state drive, significantly reducing the troublesome and time-consuming process of reinstalling software and restoring data from backups. 4 out of 5 eggsGood product with maturity

Pros: Cheaper than when I purchased in July 2011.
SSDs heading in the right direction with $/GB.
Adata quick to release firmware.

Cons: Can get no where near rated speeds by Adata.
Tried several different controllers and compared to Vertex 3 (I owned one) and my current Wildfire they blow this SSD out of the sky albeit at a higher price.

Other Thoughts: Prior to firmware update:
Sequential Read: 354.73mb/s
Sequential Write: 73.44mb/s
4k Read: 16.17mb/s
4k Write: 56.73mb/s
4k-64Threaded Read: 59.11mb/s
4k-64Threaded Write: 73.97mb/s
Access Read: 0.23ms
Access Write: 0.28ms

After firmware update:
Sequential Read: 430.14mb/s
Sequential Write: 74.32mb/s
4k Read: 16.85mb/s
4k Write: 52.68mb/s
4k-64Threaded Read: 58.81mb/s
4k-64Threaded Write: 74.34mb/s
Access Read: 0.24ms
Access Write: 0.27ms

If you want a good way to penetrate into the SSD market this will satisfy most peoples needs. After using this for almost a year on an office PC it has suited it's requirements just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected on Linux 64-bit system with SATA3 motherboard

Pros: Drive is freaking fast! Using a supported motherboard from ASUS, I'm getting average real-world write speeds of about 5Gigabits/sec (note this translates to around 650 MegaBYTES per second; don't confuse bytes with bits.) Drive is formatted in ext4 with default block sizes. In my case it was a good bang for the buck.

Cons: None encountered thus far.

Other Thoughts: I am running with out-of-the-box firmware 3.2.0. If people are having issues with their drives, there is a new firmware published on Adata's site and I recommend trying an upgrade. Also, if your motherboard only supports SATA2, then don't expect greater than SATA2 speeds (thought the dirve should still perform better than an equivalent HDD.)

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate on previous review

Pros: Speeds are as advertised

Cons: None at the moment

Other Thoughts: Update to my prior posting - I did contact ADATA and they were extremely fast and prompt in giving me an RMA, and even offered to exchange it for a different model of a higher capacity. I had some personal things in my life that prevented me from sending out my drive (it really was due to the sandforce controller), and customer support actually checked up on me to make sure I still wanted to send the product back. They also mentioned that they had firmware in testing, and offered me a link to try it out. I still didn't have a chance, but by the time I did, the public firmware came out - I downloaded that, patched my drive, and since then, I have not had any issues since.

So, I'm revising my review to reflect the product's performance and the excellent customer support ADATA gave. Thanks guys!

4 out of 5 eggsFast but random BSOD

Pros: very fast, seriously i love it how its fast compared to maximum sata II ssd performance.

Cons: it was dead on arrival, i didnt have time to use it alot... but every morning it was dead and had to make a power cycle to reuse it... as i work alot, i've been waiting too long to rma it to newegg so now i have to send it back to adata... ADATA website kinda sucks tbh... no drivers or updates and firmware... what about forums? anyway... drive rocks, but to situation is very bad... as always rma is very bad because you have to pay money again and again....

Other Thoughts: as for performace/price i dont have anything to say! this is pretty fast write/read and thats how any ssd should be... not low write high read.

and for the cons: i tried to remove any hibernate and sleep stuff and it keeps bsoding.

1 out of 5 eggsSMART Failure out of the box.

Pros: Not sure yet. Practical speeds not much different than my Caviar Black's. Windows index score 7.1

Cons: Actual throughput still under 100mb/s . HD tune Pro and every other benchmark program i have tested the drive with report "Error! Threshold reached. Replacing the Hard drive is recommended." "Health Status 0%" I wouldn't not usually trust the results of third party software, but when every last program I use reports the same thing, I cannot ignore it.

Other Thoughts: 1 egg for Newegg's obvious acceptance of the fact that these drives can fail and their refusal to refund when they do. Now my only choice is to RMA for return which means Ill get a "Re manufactured" drive and effectively paid $140 for a second hand drive. Could have bought a used drive on and online auction site for less. Instead I paid top dollar for a used one...

1 out of 5 eggsSandforce controller issues = do not buy

Pros: Really fast. Win 7 boots and shuts down like a boss.

Cons: BSODs, OS stuttering/freezing/locking up. Based on research it has to do with the type of Sandforce controller (Sandforce 2281), which Sandforce is still trying to resolve (if you go to the sandforce website, it's on the front page)

Because of this alone, it's unfortunately a should not buy. I'm essentially unable to use the SSD at all. I have left a message with ADATA support today, so we'll see how that goes.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Drive but buyer be informed first

Pros: I ordered two of these drives a little over a month ago and they are extremely fast and responsive. Running two of these drives in a RAID 0 array. The computer boots up in about 10-20 seconds max. Running applications is great. I wish I had moved to SSDs years ago.

Cons: The downside is one drive apparently likes to fail at random intervals. Sometimes twice in a day sometimes it will last as long as three days between failures. The computer will throw out a plethora of error messages and then return to POST where the raid array will be unable to detect the same drive and the array is listed as "failed."

I wanted to make sure the problem wasn't due to something on my end (being new to SSDs and non-server RAID arrays) before declaring the drive as bad. Hopefully ADATA will be able to replace the drive without too much hassle.

Other Thoughts: I read the reviews on this drive as well as others devices before I purchased. Based on the reviews out there on SSD products I have to wonder if random failures\DOA drives is just a potential problem with them. I have never had any problem with typical HDDs but almost every SSD out there includes reviews of drives that occasionally fail during normal use from the start. Maybe the technology isn't mature enough yet as other people I know seem to have the same hit/miss rate using SSDs.

1 out of 5 eggsQuality control

Pros: Speed specifications are impressive. Relative imperviousness to movement and shaking is a plus for some applications.

Cons: The drive I received was defective, allowing me to partition and format partitions but causing errors during Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installations. Having put together many computers over the years, including quite a few with SSDs, this is the first I've ever purchased to be imperfect out of the box.

Other Thoughts: A USB connection built into the device would be nice.

5 out of 5 eggsRunning 2 in RAID0

Pros: - No problems so far, runnng two of these in RAID0 as drive C:
- Running Windows 7 64-bit, fresh install on a EVGA FTW3.

Cons: - None

Other Thoughts: Something to consider when choosing an X58 chipset motherboard, and desiring RAID0: based on internet research, most folks choose the onboard Intel SATA II controller over the onboard Marvell SATA III controller for both stability and performance reasons.

(It's very important to do thorough research)

3 out of 5 eggsBe Careful!-Careful-Careful

Pros: Very Fast and seemed stable but hsd to deep six because the keyed guide tab under the USB connector broke off during install of the power connector, and the connections were intermittent.

Cons: fragile USB connector broke keyed tab upon install too easily though the root cause was the ssd card slot on the XION Predator Gaming Series AXP 970-001BK Mid Tower PC Case did not lock in the SSD card. the card was too long for the bay. who knew... blew 250 bucks

Other Thoughts: All USB connectors are too weak on the male end ! ! ! The enclosed female end at the motherboard is strong. Why sn't that connector at both ends.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
We apologize for the difficulties you had with our product. Our S511 SSD does not have any USB connector but SATA II / III Connector; could you please contact our customer service department directly and explain the issue in detail? Thank you.
