5 out of 5 eggsFollow up Review

Pros: So Far so good on my MBP.
I've read lots of horror stories with MacBooks and SSD drives and this seems to be pretty good. Installation went great. No Hickups, nothing to make me second guess the drive. The Drive has been reliable thus far - no bootup problems, reliable boot times etc.

Running VMware fusion went from bad to good - I can start two VM's at once without beachballing the system now.
Other times you might be interested in:
Boot up - Power button to Desktop: 30sec.
Start iTunes: 1.5 seconds
Start PhotoShop CS4 3 seconds to full load.

Best of all scrolling through itunes, or any image library is an instant experience now - no stuttering, no waiting for the next album cover to load.

Cons: Newegg shipped an opened drive who's serial number didn't match the box.

Other Thoughts: The 5 star review is for the drive, not newegg in this case (Sorry newegg, but I expect a new, never opened product)

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome drive!

Pros: Great capacity. No noise, heat or vibration. Easy to install. Fast use overall and great performance. Works fantastic on my MacBook Pro with PGP WDE installed. Includes 3.5" mounting bracket. Excellent packaging.

Cons: Expensive.

Other Thoughts: The SandForce chip-set on this drive is a must-have! 240GB is still a lot of space despite higher standard disk-platter options. The quality and speed of this drive are just great to have on a laptop. I just wish that the price was cheaper, but it is certainly a good deal compared to much of the competition.

5 out of 5 eggsI wanna go fast!

Pros: Extremely thrilled so far. Windows 7 installation flew, and boot up is about 12 seconds from pressing the power button to being usable when "Quick Boot" is enabled in Asus mobo bios. Price/gb better than other sandforce SSDs, partially because they only provisioned 13% for write-leveling, rather than 30%.

Cons: Still really expensive. Another company has an exclusive firmware relationship with Sandforce, so the random 4k writes on this are capped, but the cap is so high you could only tell in benchmarks.

Other Thoughts: Of the larger SSDs, this one seemed like the best deal, and I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 eggsNot a review - yet...

Pros: This is a brand new part, and there aren't yet any reviews so I thought I'd add some information thats lacking in the description.

This part is based on the Sandforce SF-1200 controller.
Firmware version is 3.09 at launch (user updatable)
This is a 256GB SSD with 16Gb reserved for the controller, leaving 240GB
4k read IOPS: 30,000 4k write IOPS: 10,000
I have seen one user's review so far on the mushkin forum.
4K reads look highly respectible at > 100MB / Second
4K writes were >60MB sec
Larger reads and writes were all between 250-260MB/Sec

Cons: So far the only con is that these are new parts so there's no established reliability.

The 60/120/240GB SandForce parts are new, There are reviews on Newegg of the 100/200GB parts from various vendors with various reviews, none have averaged 5 stars and a few have had a high % of claims of reliability issues.

When looking at other Mushkin SSD reviews on Newegg, they've all gotten 5 star reviews, but these reviews are of the non-sandforce based parts. (at least as of this writing)

This is Mushkin's first Sandforce SSD - they skipped the 100/200GB models that were released late last year.

Reviews for other brand's 100/200 are not universally positive, with many people complaining of reliability issues.

Other Thoughts: Small file speed is crucial to system performance. This is really where the SSD makes the difference.

Most all SSD's will be faster than a hard drive by a factor of 2-3x for large writes,
but with small writes, the difference can be as much as 20 times faster!

For example, a 7200RPM drive might pull 80MB/Sec for large sequential files,
yet it's common that random 4K reads/writes only reach about 5MB/Sec.
The SSD advantage really shows with these small files, yet that's an area of comparison very few people seem to focus on.
