1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 3 years 1 month

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Worked great for the first 3 years....

Cons: After 3 years and 1 month: . Started to notice random dataloss one day and an hour later it died completely.

Other Thoughts: Designed to last to the warranty and no longer, will never buy another Mushkin product, this is the THIRD product that has died within months of the products expiration. Will stick with Intel or Samsung from now on.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 6 months.

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, while it worked.

Cons: Suddenly died for no apparent reason, just after 6 months. No hiccups or odd behavior, no blue screens or taking a long time to read a file. Worked fine yesterday, dead today.

Investigation reveals the BIOS can tell something is present and tries for 60 seconds or so to read the drive, then gives up and the SATA port it was plugged into reads no device present. Plugged into an external SATA enclosure, the light simply stays red.

Other Thoughts: While the system was running, I spot checked temps around the SSD under various load conditions and it was always cool to the touch.

I also had the pagefile remapped to spinning disks, to limit SSD writes.

PSU in the system is a Corsair running at maybe 60% its spec, tops. Seems to be in good shape, as are all other components.

Interestingly enough, since then the word "Enhanced" has appeared on the sticker, and the price has doubled from what's on my invoice. The manufacturer model number (MKNSSDCL60GB-DX) and the Newegg item number (N82E16820226151) have not changed, which is very odd. Industry standard is to add a revision number or at very least change the manufacturer part number if you make a change to the device, especially one that warrants doubling the price tag. This might mean the product has been updated, but the specs and the brand name of the controller have not changed, so I think it hasn't.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Speed, But Very Unreliable

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Speed is fantastic, especially when used only to boot Windows.

Cons: Very unreliable. In the time that I had it, a little under 2 years, it failed twice. The first time it failed I was running Windows 7. I got the drive working again after a reformat, and figured it had just been a hiccup. I reinstalled Windows and it was no biggie. But, now, about 6 months later, I was experience many issues with Windows 8. Random freezing episodes where my computer becomes completely unresponsive, leading to either a hard reset or a BSOD. I blamed this on Windows 8 being a poorly built OS, although I now know that the crashing and BSOD was because my drive was failing.

Other Thoughts: If you want to buy this drive, know the risks and get the extended warranty. I am replacing it with a Kingston 120gb SSD that is faster, and currently way cheaper than the 60gb version of this drive.

3 out of 5 eggsNot what I expect from Mushkin

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It's an SSD, and I got a pretty good deal on it for $110.

Cons: It doesn't come anywhere near meeting the stated specs. Highest read speed I've ever gotten was about 200MB/sec (SATA III), and best write speed I can get is about 50MB/sec. I've had it for 2 years and 3 months, and still works really well, but based on other reviews I'm starting to wonder how much longer it will last.

Other Thoughts: I used to buy Mushkin memory exclusively. I used to drive right down to their office in downtown Denver and pick up memory. People there used to know me by name. Then they moved to a cheaper part of town. I bought their power supplies and had nothing but issues. I've had tons of issues with their memory too. Mushkin, to me, has become a name I no longer trust, and after this SSD, it will be the end of my purchases from Mushkin.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware! Very poor quality SSD! Do not buy!

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Reasonably fast, decent price at the time it was purchased.

Cons: *****Buyer beware! Very poor quality SSD! Do not buy!*****

An expensive product containing no moving parts that is maintained in a well ventilated PC tower and is not heavily used or abused should just work and not fail.

Several weeks after the 3-year warranty expired this product became defective. When I realized there was a problem (nearly 100 bad sectors had been reallocated) I attempted to retrieve the data, at which time the whole drive stopped working and became completely unusable.

Mushkin refused to honor the warranty despite the fact that it was expired only several weeks. Several weeks! This item was only 3 years old and should not have become defective so soon. Clearly, Mushkin sells substandard products.

If you want an expensive paper weight buy this product. Otherwise, avoid it like the plague!

2 out of 5 eggsGood While It Lasted

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Good while it worked.

Cons: Died in 8 months without any warning. This drive really didn't even see too much use until the last month or 2, machine was off most of the time.

Went to boot up one day after the machine had been off for a few days and the drive didn't show in bios. Tried it in multiple computers, couldn't get it to show up again.

Going to cut my losses and pick up another Samsung 840 myself.

Other Thoughts: Try to stay away from ssd's with sandforce drivers. Save yourself the trouble and go with something like Samsung, Intel, or Crucial. I have a Samsung 840 and a Crucial m4 both are still going strong after much heavier use.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Customer service

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Worked fine for about 6 months

Cons: I bought this SSD for my wife's computer and my Computer Tech son installed it. It worked fine for almost 6 months and then just quit. I contacted Newegg and they directed me to the manufacturer. I contacted the manufacturer by phone only to be told I had to go on line to fill out forms. I filled out forms and never heard from them.

Other Thoughts: I guess it is "buyer beware" and don't trust the "Unknown" manufactures to stand behind their products. This supposedly had a 3 year warrantee. Fool me once shape on me...

2 out of 5 eggsShort Life

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, worked right out of the box.

Cons: Died in May, bought in November. 7 months seems like what a lot of people are seeing. I'll RMA it, but it sounds like the replacements aren't much better.

1 out of 5 eggs2 out of 3 Dead in less than 4 Months

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Callisto Deluxe MKNSSDCL60GB-DX 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Price

Cons: High failure rate

Other Thoughts: Price was good but a 66% (2 out of 3 failed within 4 months) failure rate for an SSD is not acceptable. I guess you get what you pay for. Took over 2 weeks to get a replacement the first time. Waiting on the second now. Now I have to pay return shipping and rebuild the OS and install programs. Save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration and but another brand. I've had good success rates with Intel and OCZ. Lesson learn for me.
