2 out of 5 eggsworked for 3 years and then died

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: Fast while it lasted.

Cons: Died after 3 years and 2 weeks (just long enough to be out of warranty). For a few days before the drive completely failed my computer would hang on startup, but after multiple resets would eventually boot to windows. I thought the problem was due to a broken Thinkvantage HDD active protection sensor, but when it stopped booting entirely, I discovered that the bios could not even see the drive anymore. However, by then, it was too late to back up all of the data.

Other Thoughts: If you have this drive or if you are planning on buying this drive, I recommend having it backed up daily to another HDD. Once it fails, it is unlikely you will be able to recover any data from it.

3 out of 5 eggsPerformance is good. Quality is suspect.

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: Fast when it was working.

Cons: After about a year of intermittent working (would not always register on boot) it finally got a Kernel inpage error and never worked again. Of course this started after 30 days. Was only used for OS with paging and libraries moved off to a separate sshd. Tried everything to get it to work again. Changed cables. Different PSU. Several wipes/resets. Nothing fixed issue.

Other Thoughts: I paid more than the current price but even still with new price can't honestly recommend something that only lasts a year.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Mushkin!
We appreciate your feedback and support.

4 out of 5 eggsIt has been a reliable drive

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: Good price at the time I bought it. That was 2/12/2014. Installed in an Acer v3-772G. This is it's current state as of this drive after 18 months.

Cons: It does get hot. Has not seemed to effect it. but should have a heat sink. Half egg off. Also it is not the fastest thing out there. If coming from a spinning drive it is fast and will make most happy. If you looking for top performance this is not your drive. Half egg off.

Other Thoughts: I see a lot of reviews about shot life. Would I trust this drive? I trust this drive as mush as any drive I have owned. I don't trust any of them.

4 out of 5 eggsmushkin atlas

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: works as stated. windows 8.1 boot time to username screen went from 20+ to less than 10.

Cons: had to format with disk management. wasnt plug and play.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing Mushkin.
We appreciate your feedback and support.

The main reason why we ship our drives without pre-formatting is because our products are compatible with various operating systems; all these systems have their own types of formatting and often times are not compatible with other operating systems' formatting.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed in less than 3 months

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: Cheap, fast shipping. Mushkin agreed to RMA quickly.

Cons: Failed in less than 3 months, customer service quickly agreed to RMA as if this is a common occurrence.

Other Thoughts: If you need a drive for important documents and data I would not rely on this drive. BACK UP YOUR DATA!

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after less than 3,000 hours! Data lost!

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: Decent price for capacity
Was fast when it was still functional

Cons: Failed after less than 4 months!

Other Thoughts: The machine it runs in went unresponsive a couple days ago. This was powering a bookend machine from ZOTAC that I used as an iTunes relay to my NAS in my home theater and as an RDP server so I can get to my network from work. After less than 3,000 power on hours it failed! I tried booting to Windows install disk hoping to just recover the boot partition and get back in. The drive was seen but with a 33KiB empty partition. This is a 120GiB drive. I booted into a Linux recovery disk hoping to get my files off it, no luck. All the stuff on that drive is gone! Linux also saw a 33KiB empty partition. Tried mounting /dev/sda to /tmp/diska in a vain attempt to get my stuff off. Mount failed since there are no NTFS partitions left on the drive.

Will not purchase from this company again.

Pros: Long 3 year warranty

Fast

Fit perfectly in my Dell laptop unlike another brand mSATA drive I tried

Worked perfectly for almost sixty days

2 out of 5 eggsLong Term Update

This review is from: Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series 120GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MKNSSDAT120GB-DX

Pros: This drive has treated me well, has been responsive, and has been relatively fast early in its life. It took my MSI gaming laptop to new heights when originally purchased.

Cons: Drive now runs hot constantly...generally 51* C at idle, often over 60 after a fresh boot.

Drive has slowed down tremendously. I have windows installed on my HDD just in case this thing crashes, and the speed difference between the two is now hardly noticeable. I have a fresh install of windows about a month ago, and have never installed anything other than windows itself and a few small programs on this drive since purchased new. It no longer runs like it should, and the drive has barely seen much use seeing how little has actually ever been installed on it.

I now experience hangs from time to time too when doing small things like opening multiple programs at the same time(small programs like MSI afterburner for GPU and hwinfo64 for overall logging and steam for gaming). this has always been a routine to open all three of these back to back when I am preparing to start a game, and now it will cause a 10 second hang. Also browsers will hang if I restore old sessions with multiple tabs. The rest of my hardware is in top shape, so I know there is no other underlying issues...computer runs great if booted off the HDD instead of SSD.

Other Thoughts: Not a bad drive, but I'm certainly not impressed with the degradation of this thing so early. For a drive like mine that has seen nothing but windows and one handful of programs its entire lifetime, this thing should run full steam ahead for years to come.
While I won't say it has been an awful drive, I likely wouldn't buy another and I don't know that I would recommend to buy one to anyone I know if this is typical of Mushkin SSD's.
