There's a variety of reasons why you might want to buy a solid state hard drive, and this one pretty much meets them all.

It's tough (1500 Gs shock rating; an airplane's "black box" is rated at 3400 Gs). It supports RAID operations. It uses less power than a conventional hard drive, so it also generates less heat. It's SILENT. It uses the 2.5 inch form factor and SATA II, so installation is just like any other hard drive. It's reliable: one and a half million hours mean time between failures (MTBF). Put your information on this 128 GB drive and it will probably out live you.

Only you know what you actually need, but for laptops or other rugged environments, this one is hard to beat. So look into it and let us know what you decide.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Drive

Pros: Size

Cons: This drive is such a failure. Bought this as a size upgrade from a 64GB SSD drive from another manufacturer. After 6 hours of trying to correct the stuttering problem under outlook, i have just given up. I have done every tweak from the manuf website and no help. I reinstalled, aligned partitions and changed the registry stopped indexing, stopped superfech ect.

Other Thoughts: This drive is useless. Boots super fast, but then is just a massive fail after you have a few applications open.

Too bad I cant give it a 0.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't use with Thinkpad

Pros: High Capacity for an SSD and low cost

Cons: Tom's Hardware made this sound like the best thing since sliced bread. However it stutters all the time due to random small writes. It is twice as slow booting XP as my 7200 RPM DeskStar which this drive was supposed to replace. Overall, the few things it does faster does not make up for waiting forever on these writes. It may work OK on something other than my T61p.

The problem with the Thinpad is well attested to on OCZ's forum. Their suggestion that Steady State be installed on th disk is a nusciance. It is faster when you work, but if you want to actually save it, it can take 10 minutes or more.

Think twice before buying this drive

1 out of 5 eggsSorry I bought it

Pros: Tiny. Decent amount of space for the size. Boot up times were slightly faster than the 7200 rpm drive I was using.

Cons: On Vista 32, 4gb ram, using all of the guidelines OCZ has on their forums to minimize disk access, it runs very slowly most of the time. It was worse before implementing those suggestions. In World of Warcraft, for instance, you can start it pretty quickly, but if you log off your character, WoW writes your settings to the drive, and that takes a good 20 seconds to complete. If you try to select another character it won't actually load until the first char's data is finished writing. Vista runs very slow. Web surfing is very slow. The whole system freezes for seconds while using the drive. You need to move your Temp folder off of the dive. Forget having a pagefile on this. In short- this drive fails at all of the reasons why I bought it. I still haven't received my rebate, and I sent it in within days of getting the drive around August 1st.

Other Thoughts: I need to find another drive and hopefully copy off all of my data to it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, this drive has excellent read speeds, and the write speeds do have limitations, so we suggest that potential customers do their research based on their application. Please visit our support forums and post in the rebate section. We will contact the rebate house and find the status of your rebate. Mention that you were sent by the OCZ rep at Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsBy far the worst ssd tested.

Pros: For read, this drive is ok... let me stress the words o k. .. cause thats about it. not good not great but ok..

Cons: For read, this drive is ok. For write performace well its a joke. Every system I have tried them in shows the same performace. The tech support knows the problems with the drives and yet they cover it up with excuses on hardware. I have tried 6 of these drives with different hardware and software configs. I use the same config on patriot drives and no problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we appreciate your input. These drives use MLC technology and are priced much lower (about 1/2 the price) than the faster SLC drives. We encourage customers to research these drives based on their application before purchasing. If your application includes writing large amounts of data, or you do allot of multitasking, the OCZ SATA II drives for sale here on Newegg are a better choice. They use SLC technology and have both extremely fast read and write performance. We will be glad to answer any questions potential customers may have on our support forums at the link below.

4 out of 5 eggsCool and quiet

Pros: Runs silent. My laptop fan slowed down/is quieter since the SSD generates no heat. Computer startup and shutdown is several times faster than with a spinning drive.

Cons: Laptop pauses for a few seconds here and there but no crashes; doesn't happen in desktop. Anyone know of BIOS or other settings to fix this? Benchmarks all over the place depending on computer configuration. Physical size/case seems just a hair off from a regular drive so it didn't want to fit my external case but went in my laptop with no problems.

Other Thoughts: I hooked up this drive to my gaming computer and it works great. Windows Vista Ultimate x64 loads several times faster than the standard drive I had in there. BTW, Acronis True Image works wonders to clone a drive in your computer onto this drive, even if it's installed and running your operating system. You get a perfect copy that boots right up. Get HD Tune for easy, free benchmarking. Transfer rates 75-95 MB/s on desktop, average of 85. I wiped the drive and installed it in my laptop and it acts weird, pausing to work. There must be a bottleneck somewhere. Transfer rates 59-93.5MB/s, average 84.2. Access times either way are 0.4ms, CPU usage seems high. There was also some conflict with my external keyboard; the system paused often, sometimes for 15-20 seconds at a time but works fine again when I disconnect the keyboard. This drive is much faster than a regular drive but I want to try 2 of these drives in a RAID stripe in a desktop for extra speed: reduce your Crysis load times...

4 out of 5 eggsIts Good. Period.

Pros: Seemingly fast drive, no noise. I personally purchased at a decent price with rebate from here.

Don't listen to bashing reviews so much, maybe they are old?

If you update your bios prior to installing, chances are you will not have any installation issues.

Considerably faster and more responsive than a standard HDD

Cons: For some reason, its a little shorter and taller than a normal SATA drive, fitment was a little tight.

I agree sometimes pauses but only a second or so.

Battery life on laptop seems to have decreased.

Other Thoughts: I was a little skeptical about buying this drive after reading the reviews. I decided to bite the bullet and try it. This is hardly an unstable drive, I think its a perfectly stable product. You just have to make sure you are up to date on your bios. I build custom laptops, this drive was for my personal use. Before actually installing on my system, I tried it on a couple of laptops, 1 being a Gateway. It gave no issues, formatted it again and tried it on my own MSI PR600. Its fine, Im using it now to write this review.

Adobe CS3 FULL takes approx 45 minutes to install on standard HDD, this took about 35 minutes... so speeds are faster, maybe not groundbreaking but faster.

HD Tune reported an average read speed of 110mb/sec on this.
Ran a similar test on a standard 5400RPM HDD and it only had a max of 65mb/s with spikes as low as 9mb/s
This OCZ SDD had a tighter range because there are no moving parts so its a more stable speed.

Overall, I like the drive. Its Rebate Time.

1 out of 5 eggsDITTO of other bad reviews here!

Pros: Quiet
Fast Reads

Cons: Very Bad under even minor loads, can't do multiple tasks, VERY slow file transfers, (copying) hiccups' the worst is when trying to zip files up into a folder or making file copies!!! THIS DRIVE IS JUNK!!!!
I had to RMA the 1st unit back to OCZ over a month ago & they still have my drive!!! (I bought 4 of these total, the other 2- 64GB versions) The worst part is I paid $520 for this junk, I lost my rebate due to their 14 day mandatory mail in limit, OCZ likes to post that they will extend if asked, but this is bull S as I've tried & emailed & wrote in their forums (which are FULL of angry customers who bought this JUNK, & been taken in by their Rebate scam.

They KNOW there are BIG PROBLEMS with this product, proof can be seen in the FACTs why now their rebate amounts have now been doubled then tripled they're trying to DUMP these on the public & already released a whole new version 2 Core Version series II. Says ''Series II' on the drive label.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy this drive!! It's TRASH, they know it, others are finding out the hard way. Now they have my drive, & my $520, & worse it's resale value has dropped like a rock, their rebate has gone though the ceiling & I still don't have my defective RMA drive back from them so I can dump that one too & cut my losses!!

These drives are quickly becoming the worst purchase I have ever made in 10 years! I've lost many hours of time and hundreds of dollars to this junk!

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this drive

Pros: I got decent read speed from the drive but...

Cons: I tried this drive using both Windows XP SP3 & Fedora 9. This drive has a HORRIBLE write performance and you'll see in long pauses in the OS. (It's not as pronounced when using Linux, but it's still not nearly as good as the original 5400 RPM laptop drive)
Windows XP was absolutely unusable, but I also own a Super Talent 128G and that does fairly well in another laptop. So I know it's the drive. OCZ just shouldn't be marketing this...

Other Thoughts: I really, really wish OCZ wouldn't have put out that garbage... I used to have very high views of them... but now I won't look at their technology the same.

3 out of 5 eggsNot a good choice

Pros: Zero noise

Cons: My NEC notebook just hang all the time. Like installing Adobe CS3 or any large data application, the drive seems choking and pause for 15+ seconds. Checkinn event viewer and found that the drive has bad block. So I called OCZ, they said the drive controller probably cannot catch up with the data flow that cause the stall. They said I can wait for a newer version of this drive that may solve the problem.

Other Thoughts: Why paid premium price to be a Guinea pig?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are working on the issue you are having with your notebook. Please visit our support forums at the link below for info and assiatance.
