PERFORMER
- Pros: Does exactly what it says out of the box and as soon as i can will by a larger OCZ ssd.
- Cons: Still high priced but what on the cutting edge isn't.
- Other Thoughts: It loaded fine with Vista ultimate but I haven't tried XP yet and don't see a problem as long as SP3 is present I guess i'll have to slipstream.
The Best of the 1st generation SSDs
- Pros: Very fast read/write speeds due to the fact that the Apex is just 2 smaller ssds w/JMicron controllers set up with internal raid0. Veeery fast, very impressive. XP is much snappier, apps load a LOT faster. On seq. transfers I avg ~210-225MB/s read and 100-110 MB/s write..no problem. Ocz also extended the Apex warranty to 3 years as well. :)
- Cons: To keep costs down, Ocz went with the 1st gen JMicron controller. It was discovered that SSDs with this JMicron controller suffered from 'studdering' or hanging up due to the controllers inability to cache and execute numerous random 4k writes in a timely fashion. To make things worse, this JMicron controller's firmware can NOT be flashed/updated. Also there's no TRIM for gen1 SSDs.:(
- Other Thoughts: At the time of this writing, Ocz is launching their next wave of 2nd gen SSDs with various controllers including a new, now fixed (and still affordable) controller from JMicron. The high end Vertex still uses the Indilinx Barefoot controller which can be flash up as the firmwares improve. The there's the Summit 'mainstream' with the latest Samsung controller...also upgradeable, flashable. And also there is the newly announced Ocz Agility line that uses the new flashable JMicron controller. Also, Intel and Samsung are hard at work churning out the next gen flash memory chips using the newest 32nm process (the controllers are already down to 32nm). This means that SSD drive prices will keep on coming down like they have been and the drives themselves will continue to go faster and faster. Looks like SATA 6GB/s (aka Sata3) will be coming along just in time to be able to handle the ever increasing SSD speeds..esp in raid0. Can't wait for USB 3.0...imagine an ext. drive with SSD speeds!!!!!
No more Click click Clack!
- Pros: SSD
Budget Performance no moving parts no noise!
installed windows 7 from usb drive-ssd in about 15 minutes. Windows 7 really does seem to be geared better toward SSDs , as the tweaks were unnecessary.
- Cons: none so far.
- Other Thoughts: I did have to change mozilla to cache on the ram instead of the disk ... every once in awhile it would stutter while browsing, didn't stutter doing ANYTHING else.
have been playing games (not installed on the drive - but through the os installed on the drive so I think it matters) running Adobe suite and Mzoft office (IS installed on the drive)
adobe apps load in seconds .. like 3-8 seconds. I LOVE IT!!!
