OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 3.5” Solid State Drives deliver the same industry-leading performance as the 2.5” edition in a larger, lower cost per gigabyte form factor to easily integrate into desktop applications without the need to install additional hardware.

Designed to excel in both sequential and random read/write speeds up to 50,000 4KB random write IOPS, the 3.5” Vertex 2 maximizes productivity when used as a primary storage or boot drive, minimizing program load times and completing tasks with blazing speed. Using the latest controller technology, the 3.5” Vertex 2 provides a faster, more responsive PC experience complete with TRIM support to keep your drive operating at peak performance in Windows 7 systems. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, Vertex 2 3.5” drives easily integrate into today’s desktop platforms as the ultimate storage upgrade.

  • newegg Cool, quiet and durable operation OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs feature a durable yet lightweight housing, and because they have no moving parts, they are more rugged than conventional hard discs. Available in ample 90GB to 480GB capacities, the Vertex 2 is an ideal hard drive replacement for first-time SSD upgraders in need of primary desktop storage or a spacious application and OS boot drive.
  • newegg Ultimate reliability Designed for ultimate reliability, Vertex 2 Series SSDs have an excellent 2 million hour mean time between failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. Vertex 2 Series comes backed by a 3-year warranty and award-winning technical support for the ultimate peace of mind.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSDs offer native TRIM support that can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.
  • newegg SATA 3.0 Gb/s Interface The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSDs feature the next-generation SATA II interface supporting up to 3.0 Gb/s data transfer rates, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and hot-pluggable point-to-point connections for optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat... while it lasted

Pros: Awesome speed for a decent price. The 3.5" form factor fit smoothly into my case without an adapter.

Cons: Died after about 3 and a half years (just out of warranty of course). It will turn on, but will freeze like clockwork every 4 minutes and a solid red light will appear on the drive.

Other Thoughts: Buying a newly released product is always risky. It had great reviews when it was only a couple months old, but now several years later, the drive has mostly negative reviews due to drive failure just like mine.

1 out of 5 eggsthunderdan602

Pros: Drive lasted 2 years 6 months.

Cons: This drive died back in August 2013. I bought the drive here from Newegg on 2/17/11. There is a little red light next to the green light coming from drive and the drive is not recognized in my BIOS.

Other Thoughts: I am going to the OCZ website to start the RMA process

1 out of 5 eggsFATAL FLAW

Pros: Fast, works well but, has a FATAL FLAW that is known by OCZ

Cons: If you use Windows 7 sleep mode on your computer it will make your drive show a solid red and green lights and go into whats known in the forums as "panic mode". This essentially locks your drive up and makes it so your bios will not see the drive. Panic mode was designed simply to protect the Sandforce controller from hacking without any regard to your data. OCZ will not give you any help in retrieving your data.

Other Thoughts: Luckily this drive has a 3 year warranty and I'm starting the RMA process but, I've lost very important data. Shame on OCZ for not warning customers about a KNOWN FLAW that leads directly to data loss. If they just included a warning with the drive I would have been aware of this.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear T1PC,

There appears to be some misinformation or miscommunication here. The "2" series SandForce-controlled drives to not have a known flaw that prevents the use of sleep mode. There was an issue with certain drives used on specific systems under specific configurations where a blue screen could be generated upon wake, but that issue was resolved in firmware 1.37 released in June of 2012. OCZ will gladly test and replace your drive in accordance with the warranty terms and can recommend a company that specializes in data recovery if no backup exists of your data. Any recovery attempt would need to be conducted before returning the drive under RMA.

We appreciate your feedback and will do everything possible to resolve this situation to your satisfaction.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

3 out of 5 eggsGood while it lasted... (2 yrs 5 months)

Pros: Great drive. Super fast.

Cons: I paid $190+ back in the day :(

Died today after 2 yrs 5 months of 24/7 use. Started blue screening every 10 mins. This was my 1st SSD purchase so I can't really comment on the longevity but looking at the comments I'm glad I got this long out of it.

Only partially died, so I was still able to pull my files off but chkdsk hangs at 40% whether it's hooked up to the motherboard or through a SATA/USB adapter.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear teodulog,

This problem may be helped with a firmware update and/or secure erase and reinstall. Please start by updating the drive firmware to version 1.37. You can do this easily with the OCZ Toolbox linked below. If after the update you continue having problems, please contact our Support Forum and we will gladly assist. If you contact us please provide your system details, bsod codes, and any steps you have previously taken to resolve the issue.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

2 out of 5 eggsNot dependable

Pros: Fast drive

Cons: This drive crashed twice. 1st drive crashed after about 6 months. The 2nd drive crashed about 6 months. The warranty is up, but I wouldn't replace it anyway.

Other Thoughts: I am now using samsung ssd and no trouble with 256GB 830

1 out of 5 eggs2nd RMA. Another Failed Drive.

Pros: Speedy Drive and Easy to Install

Cons: I know this product is discontinued, but disappointed that a 2nd Drive failed just like the first within 2 years. Once drive locks up, the BIOS does not even recognize the drive.

Other Thoughts: OCZ Support was excellent with the first and just replaced the 1 drive. Just submitted a 2nd RMA. After getting the replacement drive, I took precautions to avoid another failure. Updated firmware on Drive & Mobo/BIOS. I also disabled sleep and hibernation in Windows which seemed to be a root cause of the issue. possibly a bug with the SandForce Controller on this drive.

Manufacturer Response:

The Vertex 2 has received several firmware updates which contain many enhancements and adjustments. The most recent firmware was targeted at S3/S4 transitions and possible resulting BSOD on some systems/configurations. Hopefully this will help mitigate the failures you have experienced. If you experience any further issues please visit our Support Forum and will help however possible.

Thank you and we sincerely apologize for the failures you have experienced!

1 out of 5 eggsNot Worth It

Pros: Worked Great, Very Fast while it lasted.

Cons: Totally unreliable. SSD went into auto-lock after 6 months of use and could not get my BIOS to detect it. Talked with OCZ support and they told me to secure erase and update the firmware. I did it and the drive worked for about another 3 months and died. RMA'd the drive to OCZ and got a "new" drive. Worked for 3 months and same thing happened... I'm giving up and switching to a different SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong after 1 year

Pros: My PC is just as fast when I did a fresh install of my OS, drivers. and software. I use my PC every day, sometimes for hours on end, and this drive is still a pleasure to have. BF 3 and the maps in multiplayer games load very fast.

Cons: None. Zero.

Other Thoughts: I love this drive.

2 out of 5 eggsMiddling on AMD, screamed on Intel

Pros: The drive, when finally used on an Intel Z68 motherboard, was as fast as I had expected. There was almost no boot time once the system made it past POST, and programs loaded as fast as would be expected from a SSD.

Cons: I started using this drive on an AMD FXT790 board and I was disappointed by how slow this drive was compared to my older Intel 80GB G2 that the OCZ replaced. Benchmarking the drive showed lower throughput each time, perhaps a symptom of the Sandforce controller.

The kicker for me was how fickle the drive was with what you did - OCZ forums at one point recommended avoiding repeated reads and writes to the drive to prevent throttling, and even recommended not allowing the computer to sleep. MAybe I should have heeded their warnings and not used this as my OS disk on a computer that regularly slept - the drive just died and isn't detected on any computer I try now. I suppose the last thing I could review is the RMA process, but I haven't gotten far enough to be able to comment.

2 out of 5 eggsWORKED WELL UNTIL IT CRASHED

Pros: Fast running, accepted information well and booted windows 7 in 2min

Cons: Unreliable, I had it for about 6 months before it went to hell.

Other Thoughts: It seems that the manufacturer needs to address this issue as it seems to be persistent.

Manufacturer Response:

We aplogize for the difficulties and the inconvenience. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to contact our support staff. We are confident that we can get you running with improved reliability. We care about our customers and are here to help. Thank you
