  • newegg Cool, quiet and durable operation OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs feature a durable yet lightweight housing, and because they have no moving parts, they are more rugged than conventional hard discs. Available in ample 90GB to 480GB capacities, the Vertex 2 is an ideal hard drive replacement for first-time SSD upgraders in need of primary desktop storage or a spacious application and OS boot drive.
  • newegg Ultimate reliability Designed for ultimate reliability, Vertex 2 Series SSDs have an excellent 2 million hour mean time between failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. Vertex 2 Series comes backed by a 3-year warranty and award-winning technical support for the ultimate peace of mind.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSDs offer native TRIM support that can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.
  • newegg SATA 3.0 Gb/s Interface The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSDs feature the next-generation SATA II interface supporting up to 3.0 Gb/s data transfer rates, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and hot-pluggable point-to-point connections for optimum performance, efficiency, convenience and flexibility.

2 out of 5 eggsDisk is plagued with errors

Pros: Super fast, especially as a boot drive
Slim
Low temps

Cons: Not dependable like a hard disk drive
Won't last long
unorthodox form factor (when installing to my rig)
Expensive at the time of purchase

Other Thoughts: I have successfully installed Mac OS and Windows operating systems before, back and forth during the time i used this SSD. As the two year mark came, Windows 8, my OS installed on it at the time became unresponsive to usual commands (i.e. program functionality, Windows updates, etc.). The SSD was part of a multiboot system alongside with Mac 10.8.3 (which was on a different hard disk: Velociraptor 1TB). During the boot process of the Mac, it would display error after error being detected from the Win 8 drive. At first I thought my Win 8 drive (SSD) had a virus. Every time I tried to make a backup copy of Win 8 from the SSD it would fail, no matter if I used Window's native Backup and Restore or if I used disk cloning software such as Shadow Copy Cloner. After many weeks of trying to revive the drive, I had no choice but to salvage whatever files I was able to copy from the SSD and take a loss on my Win 8 OS. I like OCZ for their memory (best in the business) but their SSDs s*ck. I'm sad I ever gave thought to owning an SSD from this brand.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Problems Whatsoever

Pros: Fast, dependable.

Cons: None so far (after nearly 2 years).

Other Thoughts: Installed mine in my PC almost 2 years ago (will be 2 years in February) and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. Very dependable. This baby is fast. My bootup time went from about 3 minutes to about 30 seconds. Of course, I did ALOT of review reading before I decided on a OCZ Vertex II. At the time it was considered the most dependable, with very few complaints. And time has proven this to be true with me. Would highly recommend. Sorry about the few who got a bad apple, but this definitely hasn't been my experience.

3 out of 5 eggsLots of issues, so I'll wait.

Pros: speed

Cons: high failure rates

Other Thoughts: I was actually going to buy a drive tonite, but after seeing the high percentage of folks having failure issues, and the inherent headaches that causes, I'm going to stick with my old velociraptors for a while longer. Looks like all the manufacturers are having issues, but OCZ's reputation may be too parfumed at this point. Still, I will enjoy thew speed when the quality gets more consistent.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Honeymoon is over

Pros: THis is an update to a previous review.
This thing is really fast when it is working. Once you have an ssd it is hard to imagine your computer without it.

Cons: Unfortunately I am now without my SSD. It was officialy pronouned dead at aproximately 5pm on 04/07. And I could have sworn it was trying to take my entire system down with it.

Other Thoughts: I am not sure what caused the problem and if it could have been avoided. It was working so well in the begining and now..... I will update anyone who is interested pending the results and the details of OCZ RMA process.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to get in touch with our staff to arrange for a replacement drive. We will be happy to assist you. Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsVery pleased

Pros: This drive is amazing. After proper installation with all the correct settings, my PC now boots in about a quarter of the time, the Windows screen after login appears pretty much instantly and Mozilla Firefox launches within 2 seconds. I had no problems with the drive so far (used it for about 3 months now), everything is working perfectly.

Cons: Difficult to fine tune (applies to all SSD drives, not really specific to this model). Basic connections and setup are easy, but it took me about a day to check all different settings in the Bios, update Windows to W7, format and select all the correct settings in Windows to make sure the drive is used optimally. Definitely requires some good experience with PCs and Windows to get all the benefits out of it. The time it takes to set it up made me remove one "egg" from the rating.

Other Thoughts: The information of how to set up the drive properly comes with the drive in a short manual, but a lot of useful information can be found on the Internet. It is worth browsing for a while to find suggestions how to fine tune these drives.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Bought this product from another website. Its fast. I don't know how it compares to other SSD's but it blows regular hard drives away. I put this ssd in my first new build. It boots up fast and shutdown fast. The computer is pretty fast to begin with, being a new build and 8gb of ram but everything seems to be so much more responsive with this SSD. The fact that it is 167gb of usable memory meant I could put more than just windows7 on it. It loads all of my games with ease and many applications come on without any perceived delay.

Cons: alas the only con I see has nothing to do with the product but my own lack of experience. I here people complaining that this ssd is somehow not as good as most because of recent changes. Since I do not have much experience with ssd's I can not judge. Faster than my hard drive though.

Other Thoughts: I am curious as to how long this honeymoon will last. This thing seems to good to be true

1 out of 5 eggsReceived 25nm flash nand

Pros: Hmmm, don't know.

Cons: Now uses 25nm flash vice 34nm. Same part number and model, different product. I haven't even installed the OS to this drive yet. I'm kinda disgusted and feel as if I've been deceived. I now understand that 34nm flash is EOL. 25nm is less expensive, so I think there shoulda been a larger price drop on this SSD.

Other Thoughts: Shame on me for not keeping up with every nuance of SSD/nand flash technology. Check to see if you can find a SSD still using the higher grade 34nm flash memory. The price difference isn't much.

2 out of 5 eggsGood product, not great

Pros: It is faster than my old regular HD, but not by much. From the speed tests its about 10%, and thats using the ones OCZ recommends on their website.

Cons: Not worth the price - too expensive for the minimal speed boost.
After changing the BIOS settings to AHCI it takes longer to boot.

Other Thoughts: I should have gone with the Crucial 256GB. Probably would have been a lot faster and more space but I was just trying to save a bit of money. Very disappointed with my purchase.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry that you are not seeing the speeds you expected. You should see a considerable increase over a standard hard drive, and of course somewhat less if you had a RAID 0 setup. If we can be of assistance please post on our support forums. Thank you

2 out of 5 eggsVery fast! (and died fast)

Pros: Believe the hype. My main PC went from and WEI of 5.9 (disk drive being the lowest score) to 7.1. Not that WEI means anything. It's in real life usage that you truly appreciate the speed of this drive. Photoshop boots in <15 seconds, MS Office apps in less than 3. As a matter of fact, only QuickBooks (a known slug) took more than 20 seconds to boot. Fantastic.

Realistic sustained transfer rates to an eSata 4 bay enclosure were around 120 - 130 megabytes per second. 1.4Gb avi files take about 15 seconds.

One final "Pro": It had the decency to die within 30 days so I don't have to deal with OCZ's RMA policy.

Cons: Woke up two days ago to a black screen on power up. I had read about problems with these drives occasionally not being recognized in BIOS so I wasn't worried. The solution is to power down, wait a few minutes and reboot. Not in this case.

After many reboots I uninstalled the drive and reinstalled it in a spare PC (tried with and without AHCI enabled). Not recognized by either the BIOS or the OS. Tried the USB to SATA cable trick with a notebook. No joy. 6 hours of my life wasted.

Other Thoughts: By all means get an SSD drive but be aware that the failure rate at the moment is alarmingly high. I recommend leaving your existing OS drive in your PC after disconnecting it so you can easily swap back to it if/when your SSD craps out. You must also relocate your Documents folder to another physical drive and you'll be good to go until your replacement SSD arrives.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we aplogize for the problem. Your replacement drive should serve you well, and if we can be of any assistance in the future, please visit our support forums at the link below. Thank you
