The OCZ Z-Drive R4 Series represents a turning point in the evolution of PCIe attached solid state storage by merging the best feature sets of both the pure hardware and pure software based approaches to data management. Designed and manufactured for a wide range of enterprise environments including cloud computing and data centers, the Z-Drive R4 features OCZ's Virtualized Controller Architecture (VCA) 2.0, providing the utmost in performance, flexibility, durability and enhanced reliability, allowing data centers to rely on a PCIe-based SSD as their primary tier one storage solution for the first time. Additionally, the Z-Drive R4's level of concentrated performance enables system architects to design more productive infrastructures while lowering operating costs associated with hard drive technology.
VCA 2.0 supports the industry standard SCSI command set and, among a litany of other things, provides highly efficient performance aggregation due to OCZ’s exclusive Complex Command Queuing Structure (CCQS), that handles balancing with OCZ's unique Queue Balancing Algorithm, that extends the NAND flash life at a block level, manages redundancy, and is the software interface with the host system.
Z-Drives integrate seamlessly with servers at the system bus and kernel level, creating a new flash memory tier and dramatically increasing throughput and application performance all while slashing capital and operating costs. The OCZ Z-Drive R4 Series is available in half height and full height configurations (half height form factor for CM84 Version).
Excellent Benchmarks...And that's about the most I can push it!
Pros: Incredibly easy to use. Plug and play. Drivers from oczenterprise just -work-. Very fast, especially in benchmarks. Tested so far running BFBC2 and it's snappy with all load times. Will not be used for its actual purpose (virtualization, massive SQL databases) so I can't speak on those. The product is aesthetically pleasing while booting, although that won't matter in a server. The card has venting on the PCI bracket (I switched to the standard since this is in a desktop right now) for airflow which I believe should be more than satisfactory. The card fits extremely well in an Antec 900.
Cons: The price, if I did not receive this as a gift, is exorbitant, in my professional opinion. I suppose that's what you can expect for having cutting edge hardware. Also turns out that OCZ is already coming out with R5.
Other Thoughts: OCZ phone support was excellent. They even mentioned you can use the RevoDrive drivers if Windows doesn't pick up the Z-Drive, which is rather interesting. Hopefully someone finds this of some help.
