5 out of 5 eggsOCZ ARC 100

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast,Fast,Fast ,These were the cheapest 240 Gig SSD's at the time of my purchase and they work great win 7 boot times of 17 seconds ,Windows experience score of 7.6
Not bad at all for the cheapest 240 Gig SSD.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsFaster

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Windows index jumped to 7.5 from 7.4, not a big deal but it's faster. Old SSD was a smaller OCZ Octane.

Cons: Why only 240GB, not 256GB?

Other Thoughts: I tried to clone my C: drive using the SSD in two different working external hard drive enclosures. One was ESATA and the other was USB. I could see the SSD in Disk Management, but it would not activate and could not be formatted. Finally I installed it in my tower and it worked. I had used those same enclosures to clone two other SSDs. Never called tech support so I don't really know what the issue was.

4 out of 5 eggsGood choice

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Worked right out the box, trouble free since.
There are some faster drives but you won't notice.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great price/performance ratio, no noticible difference from the fastest in real world use.

3 out of 5 eggscompatibility issues with some laptops

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: works on a Mac; made in Taiwan; solid construction; good value

Cons: doesn't work with Toshiba Protege laptop 2014 (Windows 8), either by cloning or fresh install; sporadic crashes on an Acer netbook (Windows XP)

Other Thoughts: I initially bought it to upgrade my wife's laptop. I thought OCZ, a Toshiba company, would work with a Toshiba laptop, but I could not get it to work, either by fresh install of Windows 8.1 or cloning her existing drive. The computer would see the drive, attempt to boot, but then go back to the Toshiba power-up screen without any error code. OCZ email tech support tried to ask me to do a few things I already tried; eventually offered to do an RMA but I said there is nothing wrong with the drive because it works fine on a Mac. They still did not think it could be a compatibility problem.

I also tried cloning a Windows XP netbook and it boots, but after driver update (which I could not turn off because Windows detects and updates it), it would crash sporadically for no apparent reason. Some apps would just crash; sometimes certain apps or waking from sleep would result in Blue Screen of Death (which really would not happen so often with the original HDD). Rebooting would take a few tries (between "booting Normally" and "Last known good setting") to succeed. I tried to turn off power management on disks but still that didn't help.

it does not come with cloning software, which is expected at this price point, but I wasn't aware of this feature when I was shopping for one. The ARC 100 website says to use Acronis but it only links to the software other SSD models by OCZ but not for the ARC 100.

This is my second SSD. I wish people would also state which laptop or desktop models work and don't work in their reviews, so I don't end up buying something incompatible. My last one was a Pyro which got bricked for no apparent reason after 1.5 years. It was used with a Mac for a while without problems, but hooking up to a DVR bricked it after a few weeks.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Pai C.,

I am sorry you had some difficulties with the setup of your ARC 100. I have investigated the combination of the ARC 100 and a sample of 2014 Protege models and found no incompatibility references. While you have determined the drive is working normally on a Mac, we are still willing to provide a replacement in the event this is a single drive fault of some kind. If you wish to pursue that you may respond to your already in progress case at any time.

It is important to us that you are satisfied with our products and will work to make that a reality.

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsGreat price great performance

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This drive has really great performance. It does not score as high on the benchmarks as the Samsung EVO or Scandisk Extreme, but the price is much more reasonable. In real world application you would not even notice a difference.

Cons: It does not score as high on the benchmarks as the Samsung EVO or Scandisk Extreme.

Other Thoughts: I had an old OCZ 120GB ssd drive. I used partition magic to copy the old drive to the new. Then I used windows disc manager to enlarge the partition to maximum drive space. I did not loose any information and my pc works exactly like it did before, only now I have a ssd with double the size!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It's fast as you would expect from an SSD (compared to a typical HDD) and (at the time of my purchase) sells for a price that is acceptable. I received what was advertised.

Cons: Be aware that this product does not come with any screws, mounts, or cables which you may or may not need for your setup. It's just the SSD, just as advertised.

As for the quality and condition of the product, I have no complaints. Essentially no cons.

Other Thoughts: I would buy again.

2 out of 5 eggsSSD works like a charm Rebate seems like a scam

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: SSD performs like a champ, so far I'm getting 8 second OS boot times.

Cons: No tech issues just rebate issues. See "other thoughts" below for more details. Would have been 5 stars if they honored the rebate.

Other Thoughts: Similar experience as Daniel K.

Rebate run around nonesense claiming I didn't submit documentation. This rebate company is pretty shady, they've only received 3 of the 11 rebates I've submitted this year. OCZ, ASUS, Gigabyte etc.. all seem to use the same shady rebate processing company.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Trevor L.,

I am pleased to read you seeing such great speeds with the ARC 100! However, I am sorry to read you have had a problem with your rebate. I have provided two links below: the first will allow you to track your rebate and the second will put you in direct contact with our rebate office. I am confident we can get this sorted out for you.

Thank you again for your purchase!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Start

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: My first ssd... not the fastest but worth the $ when found on sale. Love it and have had only one minor problem.

Cons: Took an egg off due to the drive not coming with a sata cable... other than that, I had a minor problem with the OS updates... drive seemed to fail at first. Made me worry, but I updated my bios and it has ran flawless since.

4 out of 5 eggsthe arc of terror

This review is from: OCZ ARC 100 ARC100-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: overall the arc is a great ssd an once working is lightning fast. works well within specs of read an write. slim design fit well in my desktop already fit for universal drives.

Cons: -no hardware
-doesnt work out of the box for windows 7(the drive showed on the bios an was discover-able with boot disk, i created a clean drive no install of win7 223gb. then the computer showed it in GPT format not MBR an this is an issue for win7. now i repeated the steps above with the boot disk an just deleted an created the drive again not sure how or why but when i decided to quit messing with the drive an possibly rma the item it showed up under mbr format an has been working fine since. only con i have had on these drives.

Other Thoughts: for non tech savvy people
GPT Format: GPT stands for GUID Partition Table. It’s a new standard that’s gradually replacing MBR. It’s associated with UEFI — UEFI replaces the clunky old BIOS with something more modern, and GPT replaces the clunky old MBR partitioning system with something more modern. It’s called GUID Partition Table because every partition on your drive has a “globally unique identifier,” or GUID — a random string so long that every GPT partition on earth likely has its own unique identifier.

This system doesn’t have MBR’s limits. Drives can be much, much larger and size limits will depend on the operating system and its file systems. GPT allows for a nearly unlimited amount of partitions, and the limit here will be your operating system — Windows allows up to 128 partitions on a GPT drive, and you don’t have to create an extended partition.

On an MBR disk, the partitioning and boot data is stored in one place. If this data is overwritten or corrupted, you’re in trouble. In contrast, GPT stores multiple copies of this data across the disk, so it’s much more robust and can recover if the data is correupted. GPT also stores cyclic redundancy check (CRC) values to check that its data is intact — if the data is corrupted, GPT can notice the problem and attempt to recover the damaged data from another location on the disk. MBR had no way of knowing if its data was corrupted — you’d only see there was a problem when the boot process failed or your drive’s partitions vanished.
