5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

Pros: Was one of the fastest drives available when I bought it
Lasted 2+ years so far with no issues or bad cells (sectors)
No noticeable speed decrease over time

Cons: Runs a little hot
A little small (80GB)

Other Thoughts: When I bought this drive 2 years ago, the $2.25/GB price was the best you could find. At the time, SSDs were pretty rare and 250MB/s was one of the faster drives available. 80GB got a little cramped, so I upgraded to the 256GB Samsung 830 series with the sale this week ($0.62/GB lol). That will become my main drive and this OCZ drive will go into my Pentium 4 to breathe some life into it.

PRO TIP for those using an SSD. I use mine for Windows 7, programs, and games. To organize my files I have a HDD RAID array. I went into my user folder and deleted the following subfolders: Documents, Music, Videos, Pictures, and Downloads. Then I created junction points pointing to folders with the corresponding names on my disk drive. With this setup, putting a file in C:\Program Files\ or C:\Users\KJ4EZJ\ or C:\Users\KJ4EZJ\Appdata puts the file on my SSD. Putting a file in C:\Users\KJ4EZJ\Documents or Music, Videos, or Downloads appears like it's on the SSD but is actually on the HDD.

BTW my Windows 7 boot time with startup items on this drive was 32 seconds

1 out of 5 eggsAll drives died!

Pros: Not bad when it works.

Cons: RMA all drives (1 to NewEgg, 2 to G.Skill) Drive died relatively soon, (> 2 month) after light use. The only drive to keep working is one I RMAed to NewEgg. First batch was from Nov 2010.

Other Thoughts: GSkill will not do advance RMA or pay to ship drive back. They are quick to RMA the drive tho.

Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear you are having such problems. It is odd that multiple drives became defective. That should never happen. Please send them in for RMA and new replacements should work better. All G.Skill Phoenix Series SSDs are backed by a 3 year warranty; for any issues that may require the drive to be replaced, we can take care of it immediately. If you continue to have problems, please feel free to contact us directly so we can determine what may be causing the drives to become defective.

5 out of 5 eggsTime to upgrade!

Pros: Cheap for a SSD ($2 per GB) Fast, silent, cool, everything a SSD needs to be.

Cons: Price per GB can be considered steep.

Other Thoughts: Reliable Sandforce based SSD

5 out of 5 eggsQuick Drive

Pros: Quick drive, no problems installing it. Enough space for windows 7, dragon age origins, just cause 2 and crysis warhead. Rock on!

Cons: SSD still a bit pricey for the space you get.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother Sad DOA Story

Pros: The SSD specifications look great, the SandForce SF-1200 controller is a great platform but...

Cons: G.Skill has some disturbing failure rates on these drives. I purchased this drive and some memory for use in a Zotac ZBOX ZBOXHD-ND22-U. On first boot, all looked good - Windows began to load on the drive. After about 4 minutes, the installer threw an exception and I had to re-boot. Thinking my install disk may be damaged, I burned another one. I soon discovered that the exception was the SSD, not the source disk. The BIOS was unable to see the drive. I tried SATA and AHCI. I then removed the G.Skill drive and installed a Crucial C300 256GB SSD. The system ran like a cheetah and installation completed successfully. I tried the Phoenix Pro again and was met with the same issue. I then installed a 2.5" 5400 RPM Samsung conventional drive and it loaded completely (although not as fast ;-) ).

So, to summarize, the problem is not the system or me... it's another example of a failed drive. Good thing the drive has 364.99 days of warranty left. I will initiate a return through NewEgg.

Other Thoughts: First, let me say that I've bought a lot of G.Skill memory and never has a problem. This is the first (and potentially the last) G.Skill SSD drive I've purchased. The Crucial and Kingston drives I traditionally buy have never had a failure issue.

As for G.Skill, their RMA process is a bit antiquated with the Word document to download, print, fill out and fax or e-mail back. Do people really do that? I mean Seagate, Western Digital, NewEgg and all of the other "reputable" players in the market have a clean and efficient online process. G.Skill needs to improve in this area if they're going to begin producing inferior products. At least make it easier for customers to return their wares.

I guess failing in the first 10 minutes is better than completing the O/S load, activating Windows, Office and all of the other software, then having a failure.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear you had a problem with the SSD. Please send it in for RMA exchange and the replacement should work better. The Sandforce controller should be very stable, so you should not have such issues. All Phoenix Series SSDs are covered by a 3 year warranty, so if you ever have a defective drive, you can send it in for a new replacement. If you have any further questions or issues, please don't hesitate to contact us directly.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent SSD

Pros: Great SSD drive, with incredible speeds. I was debating on getting a Raptor drive or an SSD for my main drive. I am glad I went with this SSD drive. I use it in my Media PC, so the no noise is perfect.

The speeds are just incredible with this drive. And its a great bargain for the price.

Cons: None.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 26 days, RMA takes months

Pros: Fast

Cons: Dead in less than 30 days. Shipped with defective plastics at the interface point (out of alignment at sata connector, impossible to mount without muscling it in).

After getting an RMA auth. for the drive, I am still waiting at the 1 month mark for my drive to show up. Company states when asked " Dear customer, we're sorry, waiting on a shipment from over seas."

Other Thoughts: I don't really care what the problem with their supply chain is, what matters is I'm sitting here with a brand new laptop I can't use. I won't be buying another G.Skill SSD. I used to recommend G.Skill to people looking for memory upgrades or trustworthy parts in my consulting career. I've even mounted their memory in low end virtualization host servers. Despite the fact that their memory is reliable, how can you trust such poor customer service?

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. It should not take this long for RMA, but currently there is a shortage for IC chips which is the reason for delay. We should have them in stock shortly and will ship a replacement to you as soon as we do. Your patience and cooperation is greatly appreciated.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: From specs:
SandForce SF-1200 Series Controller
IOPS: Up to 50000
Reads: up to 285MB/s
Writes: up to 275MB/s

Cons: Ordered 2 drives. Imaged the first drive and never got it to boot, then it failed to be recognized by the BIOS on two PCs.

Imaged the second one and it worked fine. Hope it was a fluke. Will update review if the second one has issues.

Other Thoughts: The (working) drive shipped with firmware 3.0. The firmware updater tool would not recognize the drive to update the firmware. :(

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear one drive has issues. Please complete our RMA procedures and we will be more than glad to send you a new one. All G.Skill Phoenix Series SSDs are backed by a 3 year warranty. Should the SSD become defective within this time frame, we can surely send you a replacement.

Regarding the firmware update, please make sure the drive is set in AHCI mode. Also, when opening SSDupdate.exe, don't forget to RIGHT click and select "Run as Administrator". If this is not done, it will not detect your SSD. If you have any further questions or issues, please don't hesitate to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat OS Drive

Pros: Passmark Performance Test gives it a Disk Mark of ~1550. Much faster than other SSD's I have (Intel, Crucial, Kingston) where the highest rating I got was ~1100. Set up in a RAID array would of course be significantly faster. 80gb is a better size for an OS drive than the usual 64gb SSD's.

Cons: Needs firmware upgrade to version 3.1 to fix error in S.M.A.R.T reporting. Not an issue for actual use though.
