If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

4 out of 5 eggsnice

Pros: High clock speed, comes with fan

Cons: Can't actually get them to clock past 2600. Granted, its probably me not doing something right, but still.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory kit is working well in your system. If you are unable to reach the rated specification, don't worry, contact the G.Skill support team and they will be glad to assist you. DDR3-2600 is an extreme frequency, not many CPUs can support it. If yours is capable of it, this memory kit should have no problem. The G.Skill support team will make sure the computer is operating at maximum performance.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: I have now purchased TWO of these kits. They are now running at a very stable @ 2800 MHZ on a Haswell based rig. Couldn't be more pleased with the results :-)

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Since Haswell has a much more robust IMC than it's predecessor, Ivy Bridge, I felt these memory sticks would be more compatible with a 4th gen CPU and a good quality mobo (GA- Z87-UD3H) that is on GSkill's QVL.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Memory...But

Pros: Booted right up @ 2600 Mhz.. The included cooling fan is a plus, despite the somewhat awkward installation.

Cons: Sticks are rather tall, because of heatsink/fin design.

This may interfere with the installation of some CPU aftermarket heatsink/fans.

Other Thoughts: On a Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H board, which includes a 3770K Ivy Bridge CPU, I can only get the memory to run @ 2600 Mhz and not at the rated 2666 speed. I purchased this board because it was on the GSkill QVL for this type of memory.

Unfortunately, no matter what I do, the board simply will not boot up at 2666. No loosening of memory timings, or increasing IMC/DRAM voltages..etc.. in the BIOS seems to help, including flashing the latest F16 beta Bios.

My only conclusion would be that not all 3770K CPU's are binned at equal performance. Some memory controllers will run at 2666 Mhz or higher and some won't - it's basically a dice roll I would guess. Perhaps a final release of a BIOS *may* solve this issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory is working well in your system. The G.Skill Trident X series does have very tall heat spreaders, but keep in mind the red fins can be removed for tall aftermarket CPU coolers or cases with tight fits. Once the red fins are removed, the memory modules are only slightly taller than standard so much more space is available. With regards to reaching the rated specifications of the RAM, if you have tried increasing IMC Voltage, DRAM Voltage, and have experienced no improvement, most likely the CPU you have may not be capable of DDR3-2666. You can try testing each module individually, or slowly scale upwards to see what the RAM is capable at with a certain amount of voltage, or you can just leave as is. DDR3-2600 is extremely fast, so you should be very pleased with the performance result. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

4 out of 5 eggsOverclocked to 2800 with no problem

Pros: Overclockable.

Came with ram fan(i guess thats a pro)

Wasnt DOA

Cons: Cas timings are a little loose.

Other Thoughts: msi gd65
i7 3770k

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory overclocks very well in your Ivybridge build. This is one of the best memory kits on the market, so you can bet results will be outstanding. The timings may be loose when comparing to DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600, but for double the frequency at DDR3-2666, it is considered extremely low. Timings must be compared with the corresponding frequency. DDR3-1600 with a lower CAS 9, does not mean it will be faster than DDR3-2666 CL11. In fact, with the latest CPU designs, DRAM Frequency plays a greater role in improved performance over timings. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast and so far reliable. Sturdy design.

Cons: Advertised as 2666, functioning at best 2400. As other users have stated, its a CPU matching game, which isn't plainly advertised. Taking an egg off for that lack of advertisement.

Other Thoughts: LEDs in the fan module are UV-ish. Purple-ish blue. Pretty cool looking and has dictated the UV color scheme. I don't really like the way it is mounted, by just hanging on the DIMM tabs. It took a bit of bending to get it to be secure.

Bought 2 more at 2400 (at literally half the cost) since that's all I can hit anyways.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory is working fast and reliable in your system. DDR3-2666 is not for everybody. DDR3-1600+ is considered overclocking by Intel, so by purchasing DDR3-2666, it should be known that the CPU to be used in conjuction with this RAM is capable of DDR3-2666+. This is not an average memory kit, so it is not supported by an average CPU. Intel i7-3770K CPUs have been tested to support DDR3-2400, but anything higher depends on the specific CPU. The memory controller is embedded in the CPU, so it is up to the extreme user to test the overclocking margins of a CPU memory controller to achieve DDR3-2666+. DDR3-2400 is still very good, you can lower timings to make up for the lower frequency. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsVery fast

Pros: Fast, stable under load

Cons: Aux fans have an ill-fitting mount bkt.

Other Thoughts: MSI-Z77-GD65A, Intel I7-3770K, Trident 2666 8Gb dual channel kit, Samsung SSD Pro, WD Caviar Black 1 Tb, SIIG firewire 800, Windows 7 Pro Sp 1. This rig was built to record multi-channel audio using Cubase thru an ART interface. Huge data input at a fast rate. No issues so far.

3 out of 5 eggsi dont own these sticks but im sorry...

Pros: this memory has a clock speed of 2600 and a cas latency of 10.

Cons: the trident x with a 2400 clock speed and 11 cas latency is half the price and only 4/100000ths of a second slower! is 40 microseconds worth $100?

Other Thoughts: im not saying there's anything wrong with the memory, its the exact same series and manufacturer as the ddr3 2400. If four hundred thousanths of a second is worth the $100 to you, go for it but IS it REALLY worth it?

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

This memory kit is DDR3-2666 CL11. We also have DDR3-2600 CL11 and DDR3-2400 CL10, which appear to be very similar, but the quality of chips is much different. The slight differences in rated frequency and timings may appear minimal, but when overclocking and pushing world records, it can make a significant difference. As always, the top kits are designed for those looking for extreme performance and sheer processing power. The average and above average user may not need it, but it is available to those that do. Similarly, the amount of chips capable of such extreme performance is also a tiny percentage, which is why it is reflected in the price. When purchasing memory, the most important detail is knowing what performance level and capacity you need for your purpose. For any further questions or issues, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsA Sharp Purchase

Pros: Very fast.
Easy to overclock.
Great looking.
Included fan fit over heat-sinks easily.

Cons: The sharp styling of this product has rendered it sharp in the conventional sense.
Consider purchasing with the ASUS Sabertooth motherboard as it's thermal shielding is also effective against blood.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Stable Ram

Pros: Is the fastest Ram I've ever had, or was able to sucessfully OverClock. X.M.P. settings works great, one click and your running 2666! Fan keeps memory nice and cool, blue LED & doesnt seem to loud.

Cons: Price of course & 4GB only Dimms.

Other Thoughts: Had to Update my P8z77-V Deluxe Bios inorder to run 2666 threw X.M.P. Also my case is the Corsair 400R with a H100, and their is enough room for the fan that comes with this kit.
