3 out of 5 eggsSlow but works ok

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: 1. Its a USB 3.0 flashdrive
2. It works ok for what I use it for
3. Its pretty cheap

Cons: 1. I don't like the sliding cover. I have to push more on the end of the drive to inset into my usb 3.0 port or the sliding part will make it harder to put in.
2. Slower than I expected - only about 40mbs based on what i've read. Why can't all usb 3.0 flash drives all work at max speed?! Back in the 90's, tech companies had much better integrety than this.
3. It does not have an activity LED, which I prefer to see on flash drives.

Other Thoughts: save up money and find something else in the 200mbs to 400mbs speed range if you care about transfer speeds.

2 out of 5 eggsKingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: None.

Cons: Not the advertised 16GB, but is in fact only 14.25GB.
Read/Write speeds are slow.
Plastic used feels kinda cheap.

Other Thoughts: I bought this flash drive expecting something speedy with a full 16GB of storage, and was greatly disappointed when I plugged it in and discovered that it can only store 14.25GB not 16GB, I do understand that storage devices typically do have less than the advertised storage amount as most of the time the manufacturer goes by 1GB = 1000MB, whereas a normal computer goes off of 1GB = 1024MB, It couldn't have hurt them to bump the storage up a little more.
The flash drive also managed to give me a BSOD upon plugging it in directly to my computer instead of into my USB Hub, was not happy about this.
And upon doing some speed tests on the drive I discovered that it is much slower than I expected, falling far behind most other usb 3.0 flash drives.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the misunderstanding of any of the DT100G3's specifications. The available capacity of the drive differs from the actual capacity as some of the listed capacity is used in formatting and other functions of the drive. Also, this drive is an entry level USB 3.0 drive and does not offer performance transfer speeds. We are here to help and can troubleshoot with you to determine if the drive is performing as expeceted or not. When considering your experience of plugging in the drive and getting a BSOD there may be something else going on also affecting the drive's performance. So we can investigate and resolve this for you, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and an available technician will assist you.

Thank you for using Kingston Flash drives.

5 out of 5 eggsUSB 3 and I like it

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: - Works
- Slide cover for USB connector
- Key ring on opposing side of USB connector
- Low price (for 2014)

Cons: Slide cover leaves inside of USB male connector exposed to elements (dust, particles in pocket, debris, etc)

Other Thoughts: -The shell is sturdy (I torqued it using my hands and I dropped it from ~8' onto tiled floor)
-The circuitry seems efficient (I plugged it into my USB 3 port and added and removed a few ISOs totaling 14GB ~5 times throughout my day. The drive was warm, but doesn't seem affected, because I finished by loading my backup boot onto it.

1 out of 5 eggsTerribly Slow

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Nice looking flash drive

Cons: Terribly slow drives. I bought four of these and they all write at ~8.5 MB/s. I now understand that they are "USB 3.0 compliant" drives but ALL USB flash drives are compliant with USB 3.0. This is sales trickery as my 5 year old USB 2 drives write at ~7 MB/s. Sure they are cheap but a USB 3.0 claim is hogwash. I, along with those I support will never buy Kingston again.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: What can I say, it's fast and does what its supposed to do especially for the price.

Cons: Haven't found one yet.

Other Thoughts: I've noticed it's average write speed is usually 45 megabytes per second, which for the price is pretty outstanding, especially considering I always see 16GB USB 2.0 drives that cost more than this.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: * Was formatted in FAT out-of-the-box, which means it was already compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux.
* It's USB 3.0, I accidentally transferred a 750MB of files to my USB key instead of my phone, and in a few secs it transferred half of that already, and that high transfer speed is how I noticed I was transferring my files at the wrong place.

Cons: * I could not attach it to a keyring because that kind of plastic (tunnel?) in the back is tiny bit too small.

Other Thoughts: I bought this USB Flash Drive after I broke my Verbatim USB Flash Drive by hitting it with my leg while it was in the USB port of my desktop computer.
This USB Flash Drive seems much more solid, but the fear of breaking it with my leg again is still present so I'm gonna try to avoid doing this again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Linux Support

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/16GB

Pros: Kingston had good Linux support. One of the few manufactures that says so on the package.

I haven't had any issues with their thumb drives, including this one. Works great for what I use it for.

Cons: It might be a little on the slow side but I haven't compared it to other thumb drives. If I cared about the speed, I would have gotten a higher end model anyway.

The transfers seem to run very fast at first but slow done right at the end. I guess something like the data is written to buffer and then written to the flash is going on. Just something to keep in mind if you see a large amount of data transfer quickly and then it takes a while to continue.

Other Thoughts: I usually copy a few files that are a couple of gigabytes in size. It probably takes a minute or two. If you need a faster thumb drive, get one of the higher-end models.
