The Plextor M5M is a high-performance mSATA 6 Gb/s SSD specifically engineered to give ultra book, tablet PC, and other JEDEC MO-300 form factor users the speed and low power consumption benefits of the newest generation SSD technology.

  • - Latest server-grade Marvell® 88SS9187 controller ensures fast and reliable operation for all applications.
  • - Sequential mode performance of up to 540MB/s read and up to 430MB/s write, boosts the responsiveness of ultrathin laptop and tablet PCs.
  • - Random read speeds of up to 79K IOPS and write speeds up to 77K IOPS at 4K file size, give maximum real-world performance benefits.
  • - Advanced True Speed technology provides long-term sustained performance for all data types and prevents speed drop.

Plextor SSD has a unique True Protect protection system to protect the integrity of your data. To confirm that each piece of data is correctly stored with one hundred percent accuracy the newest 128-bit error correction code is used. For data confidentiality, the drive uses hardware in the US Government AES-validated Marvell controller to provide secure 256-bit full-drive encryption.

The combination of the latest Marvell® 88SS9187 6Gb/s SATA controller’s powerful 128 Random Bit/2K BCH ECC (Error-Correction Codes), and the exclusive Plextor firmware based Robust Data Hold-out Algorithm gives the M5M unequaled data integrity.

AES, the U.S. government standard encryption technology, is divided into three levels 128, 192, 256. The Plextor M5M uses the highest level of encryption-256 bits. This level of SSD encryption is highly secure compared to BIOS or software based encryption and offers strong protection if the computer is stolen.

  • Supports the SATA Device Sleep standard incorporating the new DEVSLP state allowing the SSD to communicate in sleep mode.
  • With the DEVSLP mode, the M5M can reduce the power consumption to only 1 mW, and resumes from DEVSLP mode only in 100ms.
  • In order to meet the needs of consumers, the M5M delivers an effective operating and long battery life of the mobile device.

48hr Sustained Read and Write Test
Two days continuous 4K file read/write test, zero error pass requirement.
4000 Times Idle Test–Sleep and Hibernation Test
After 24 hrs. read & write SSD enters sleep (S3) mode and is woken after 5 minutes, repeated for hibernation (S4) mode, zero error pass requirement.
250 Times Power Cycle–Cold and Warm Boot Tests
Continuous cold boot and warm boot cycles 250 times, zero error pass requirement.

With its ultra mini size, light weight and low power consumption, the M5M is especially suitable for ultra-portable on-the-go computing device.

  • - No outer case.
  • - Designed for the limited space in ultra-portable devices.
  • - Highly compact JEDEC MO-300 form factor incorporating an mSATA 6GB/s connection.

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid

Pros: Super stable - in two years I've never had any issues with this drive, no failures, no incompatibilities, etc. No problems whatsoever.

Fast - faster than you'll ever need. The only time this drive's full speed is used is when transferring data between the drive and RAM. My other hard drives are HDD's so the speed of transferring data between this and them is limited by the HDD's

Great capacity - it's plenty for a C drive. I have windows 10 and battlefield 4 (64.6GB!) on it and several other programs such as photoshop and premiere pro, and there's still 100GB of free space.

Cool - This drive does not heat up like some mSATA drives do. I've never experienced it slow down because of temperature. This drive sits right under my left hand in my laptop, and I have never experienced it making this spot of my laptop hot. In comparison, I had a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB mSATA drive in the same exact spot, and it frequently got so hot that it was uncomfortable to leave my hand there. That drive had many stability issues and as a result, I'm very happy to go back to this drive even though its capacity is 25% of the 850 EVO mSATA.

Small & light - If your computer has a mSATA port, it's a great way to add a super fast SSD without taking up much space, or adding much weight.

Cons: The price could be more competitive, but after buying a more competitively priced Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD and having major heat and compatibility issues, I am definitely going to stick with Plextor drives in the future. Their prices are worth the stability and peace of mind that their products offer.

Other Thoughts: I bought this in November 30th of 2013, so it's 2 years old now. Also, the packaging says it was manufactured in November 2013 as well, so I got a fresh one! Hopefully it's still like this on newegg, no more than 2-month old drives. There's no way for me to know that without buying another though.

I definitely recommend this drive. And I've never appreciated its stability or felt the need to review this drive until I had a bad experience with the Samsung mSATA. The first thing Samsung advertises about their 850 EVO drives is their stability, but their 850 EVO mSATA is anything but stable in comparison to this Plextor mSATA.

If you want more capacity, I recommend Plextor's 512GB mSATA. I would be very surprised if it isn't just about as stable as this one.

1 out of 5 eggsConstantly dying.

Pros: Size, price, speed.

Cons: The device either works great or is temporarily losing track of blocks. Some times it works great and other times I can not boot because this or that file "can not be found" (never the same file two times in a row). Some times it runs for days, other times it fails over and over.

Other Thoughts: I must have gotten a bad one. All the other reviewers loved the thing...

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Very fast
-Slim design

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Bought this to use as a dedicated gaming SSD. Loads games up quick and no stuttering issues. BF4 loads in 45 sec instead of 2 min and CSGO maps load in 5 sec instead of 20. Well worth the buy when it was on sale last year.

5 out of 5 eggsRELIABLE & fast enough!

Pros: Very, very reliable SSD (that is the main reason why I chose it)
Speeds are good enough for me,
Seq. Read: 492.1 MB/s Seq. Write: 399.4 MB/s
512k Read: 363.0 512k Write: 372.2
4k Read: 21.87 4k Write: 34.95
4k QD 32 Read: 300.6 4k QD 32 Write: 228.5
however if you were to put this until with Samsung's EVO, it would receive a beating but not far behind.
Plextor's MLC more reliable than than Samsung's TLC.
Very expensive (one reason due to its high demand) drive, I got mine for $199.99 however the prices have fluctuated in recent times with prices reaching as high as $299.99 and now at a current low of $159.99 caused by the release of Plextor's new M6M line of SSDs.
One of the few SSDs to use minimal wattage in operating mode.
Supports AES-256 encryption of your data.

Cons: Not the fastest m-sata drive around, Intel and Samsung are the leaders when it comes to speed.
Only 237GB usable after installing Windows 8.1.
It doesn't appear to have a built-in temperature sensor but it runs cool,

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this m-sata drive without hesitation however, Plextor use to manufacture very good hard drives now they are manufacturing very good solid state drives, you can't go wrong by picking up this unit. You get good value for money.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns Great!

Pros: Runs great! I've had this in my ideapad y500 for a few months now, still boots in about 6 seconds! Easy install, and it did come with the screw it need to hold it in place.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have this for my OS install and applications, then I keep most of my other data on the stock 1TB HDD. Love it!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: This drive is awesome. Low power consumption when not in use (the lowest I have found), speedy read/write, and a ton of storage for a tiny footprint.

Cons: Price is obviously high, but for a drive released in June/July with specs like this, it's well worth it.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these for my Sager NP7330, which I also highly recommend. I replaced all internal drives with these, one for OS and one for storage. They have worked very smoothly and caused no problems. Have had them since August 2013.
